Jodie Foster talks about 'The Beaver' and Mel Gibson's rants. When are we going to see this movie?

foster-gibsonImage Credit: Lester Cohen/WireImage.comSome celebrities attract the scandal-mongers like flies to honey. Or garbage. Then, there are those other stars who manage to leave all their fame on the screen, who seem to be made of Teflon, for how little dirt clings to them. You’ll never see a paparazzi photo of a bleary-eyed Tom Hanks stumbling out of a nightclub, or headlines that read “Cops Find Cocaine in Emma Thompson’s Purse” or “Stanley Tucci Crotch Shot.” This is mostly because these actors live their lives like normal human beings and not characters from a Bret Easton Ellis novel, preferring to clean out the gutters on a Sunday morning instead of waking up in one.

Jodie Foster largely manages to avoid the abusive and vapid lenses of the tabloids. Unfortunately for Foster, the star of her fascinating-looking new movie The Beaver, Mel Gibson, does not. After a seemingly endless stream of angry answering machine messages leaked during the actor’s divorce proceedings, Foster and Gibson’s film was shelved indefinitely. In an interview with More magazine, Foster has broken her silence on the whole ordeal, saying of Gibson, “When you love a friend, you don’t abandon them when they are struggling. Of course, Mel is an undeniably gifted actor and director, and The Beaver is one of his most powerful and moving performances. But more importantly, he is and has been a true and loyal friend. I hope I can help him get through this dark moment.” READ FULL STORY »

Emma Stone, Lindsay Lohan, and Molly Ringwald: Why do redheads rule high school cinema?

According to Science, only two percent of humanity has naturally red hair, but approximately 100 percent of high school comedies feature redheaded leads. Okay, only that first part is true, but does anyone else find it interesting that some of the most iconic stars in the teen-movie pantheon have red hair? Molly Ringwald in all the John Hughes movies, Lindsay Lohan in Mean Girls, and now Emma Stone in Easy A. And if you throw in Angela Chase from the short-lived-but-never-really-dead My So-Called Life, you’ve got nearly 25 years of redhead domination.

Tell me if I’m wrong, but I’m pretty sure Lohan’s the only natural redhead in the bunch (and her hair’s been pretty much every color but red for about five years now). But even that just adds to the curious mystique of the Red-Haired High School Outcast Goddess. READ FULL STORY »

Michael Cera School of Acting now taking applications... or something

On the ranking of fictitious schools I would love to see in reality, the Michael Cera School of Acting is easily in the top 3 (Hogwarts is the perpetual reigning champion). I feel like I must come clean with you, PopWatchers: I am a big Michael Cera fan. There’s something about his awkward charm that has made me a devotee since the first time I saw little George Michael gaze longingly at Maeby on Arrested Development. I even watched Year One! Thus, my love for all things Cera has made me super excited all day about a video advertisement for the Michael Cera School of Acting that has been circulating the Interwebs this morning: READ FULL STORY »

'The Walking Dead': AMC unveils poster for new zombie show

Categories: Horror, Television, Zombies

the-walking-deadWhen I recently spoke with Walking Dead star Andrew Lincoln, the Brit actor said one of the oddest things about working on the AMC zombie show was having to describe to the folks back in the U.K. how he was spending his days. “I was emailing home,” he told me, “and I said, ‘Well, today, I’m riding into an apocalyptic vision of Atlanta on a horse called Blade, wearing cowboy boots and a stetson, and I’ve got a bag of guns strapped to my back.’ That was my day at the office!”

And, as you can see to the left, that is also the image AMC has chosen to feature on the new poster for its undead saga, which debuts Oct. 31 with a 90-minute episode directed by Shawshank Redemption auteur — and longtime zombie nut — Frank Darabont.

Are you excited for the debut of The Walking Dead? What do you think of the poster? And of the Walking Dead trailer, which you can watch after the jump?

What young adult novel should Hollywood adapt next?

Catcher-Blue-Bloods-Artemis-FowlTalk about a hot read: Yesterday, Variety reported that Mandalay Pictures had snagged the much-coveted rights to Sophie Jordan’s young adult novel Firelight, a book that has been picking up sizzle ever since its release…on Sept. 7. Yes, as in Sept. 7, 2010, just two weeks ago.

Clearly, Hollywood has its eyes fixed on the young adult world, with every studio clamoring to release the next Twilight. (Or, as we will likely be saying soon, the next Hunger Games.) But while there’s certainly demand for a Firelight film — the book, about two teenage descendants of dragons, has been buzz-y since May’s Book Expo America — it’s a shame there’s so much focus on the new releases, especially when you consider how many untapped YA novels from the past are just begging to be adapted for the big screen. So, PopWatchers, we ask you: What young adult novel should Hollywood adapt next? READ FULL STORY »

'Community' exclusive: Twittersode to precede season premiere

Community-castImage Credit: Mitchell Haaseth/NBCRemember when we said that the Thursday at 8 p.m. timeslot war would be fun to watch play out on Twitter? That was before we even knew about this. NBC’s Community will debut a “Twittersode” just prior to the comedy’s Sept. 23 return. Over the course of 80 tweets (starting at 7 p.m. ET/4 p.m. PT Thursday), the characters will communicate back and forth in what’s described as a “prequel” scene to their return to Greendale Community College as sophomores. They’ll make arrangements for their first meet-up of the year, as well as preparations for their first class, Anthropology 101 (taught by guest star Betty White). You can watch the Twittersode unfold on www.NBC.COM/CommunityTwittersode, or, of course, in your Twitter feed, if you follow the individual characters. (Here’s that excuse you’ve been needing to check out @AnniesB00bs. Full list of the characters’ official Twitter accounts below.)

What do you think? Is this a great way to get #NBCCommunity to trend on premiere night (clever tweets should yield some RTs and replies)? Or does your love for these characters know some boundaries (like 140-characters or less)? READ FULL STORY »

'Raising Hope' premieres tonight: Will you watch?

Raising-HopeAs much as we TV viewers love our gimmicks (mysterious islands or spontaneously breaking out into song and dance), we have just as much love for more simple, but equally terrifying, gags about the perils lurking in our own homes. (Modern Family, anyone?)

So in a sea of fall TV, it should be comforting to know that we can come home to Raising Hope, Fox’s promising new comedy (premiering tonight on Fox, 9 p.m.) about a do-nothing pool boy, Jimmy (Lucas Neff), who unexpectedly becomes a father when his one-night stand winds up in jail. Jimmy is then left to raise the child with his abrasive mother (Martha Plimpton) and wacky grandmother (Cloris Leachman). Check out the trailer below: READ FULL STORY »

'Castle' returns. Beckett wears stilettos on the job. Discuss.

Categories: Castle, Television

castle-katic-stilettosImage Credit: Adam Larkey/ABCCastle returned last night with a season 3 opener that saw Castle (Nathan Fillion) having to earn his way back on to Beckett’s team after he didn’t keep in touch with them during his summer in the Hamptons — and was found holding a gun over the body of a dead woman. (He did that by winning a bet with Beckett that he would figure out the connection between the multiple victims first — they were involved in a counterfeiting ring and were being eliminated by two cohorts. The dead woman was a sculptor from whom Castle had purchased pieces. She’d invited him over to talk because she thought she was in trouble. He’d shown up right before the police, found her dead, and picked up the gun she’d had to defend herself when he heard someone entering her apartment and assumed it was her killer.) The hour climaxed with Beckett and Castle pointing guns at one another — or rather, the bad guy/gal standing behind each other waiting to fire. (Did Castle take target practice in the Hamptons?) We ended with warm fuzzies because Beckett smiled when it was suggested that she let Castle win the bet. She does want to continue working with him. It was a solid premiere that has stayed on my mind all day… because Beckett wore stilettos. READ FULL STORY »

America's Perfect Teen from...Wales?

Anysha-PanesarImage Credit: Deanna Meredith/America's Perfect TeenOh no she didn’t! Some American pageant hopefuls (and their stage moms, no doubt) are outraged because Anysha Panesar, 16, was crowned America’s Perfect Teen 2010. The problem? Panesar resides in Wales. In the United Kingdom. The last time I checked, that’s definitely NOT in America.

Panesar was in Florida on holiday with her family when she beat out the other contestants, claiming the top prizes, including a full scholarship to the Connecticut School of Broadcasting. So naturally, she’s caused quite a stir with her new title. “Some people did say I shouldn’t have won because I’m British,” she told the London Daily Mail. “But really I think the people who said that just said it because they didn’t win.” READ FULL STORY »
