Who's the best godfather for John Gotti movie?

John-A-GottiImage Credit: Adam Rountree/Getty Images; Time Life Pictures/DMI/Time Life Pictures/Getty ImagesJohn Gotti Jr., son of the famous “Dapper Don” who ran the Gambino crime family, has agreed to turn his life story into a $15 million film. According to Variety, Gotti Jr. is collaborating with producer Marc Fiore, and actor Leo Rossi (Analyze This) is working on a script. Woltz Pictures is not involved.

“The story’s about redemption,” Gotti Jr. told the paper. “My father had a hard time accepting that I ultimately didn’t want to follow his path.” To be fair, Junior’s not exactly Anthony Corleone, who spurned his father’s hopes and became an opera singer in Italy instead. Gotti Jr. was a “made man” who served time for racketeering, and then spent a decade in court, denying he was running the family business.

But who should play the Gottis in the movie? I can’t get Ray Liotta out of my head as the father, though Variety hints that Sylvester Stallone had expressed an interest. Who else could make sharkskin suits and prison orange look equally slick?

'Glee': Who's your favorite new character?

new-glee-castImage Credit: Adam Rose/FoxOMG Glee, you guys! It’s great to be back in the swing of things with our regular McKinley High crew, but the season premiere was more notable for its new faces. As any choral enthusiast can tell you, it’s tough to stand out, which is why this group seems especially promising: Dot-Marie Jones’ Coach Beiste (“it’s French”) might be the perfect new foil for Sue, and Cheyenne Jackson’s Dustin is a worthy successor to Idina Menzel’s Shelby as the head of Vocal Adrenaline. Chord Overstreet as Sam is very cute and all, but the real highlight for me was definitely Charice as Sunshine Corazon. So which new Glee character was your fave, PopWatchers?

'Detroit 1-8-7' sure seemed familiar...

DETROIT-1-8-7Image Credit: Craig Sjodin/ABCDetroit 1-8-7 premiered last night, and while I want to love a Michael Imperioli show, I couldn’t help but feel like we were in serious patchwork-quilt territory. The show is totally made up of other shows:

  • Homicide‘s dry-erase board I’m sure lots of police stations really do have white boards with unsolved crimes written in red and solved ones in black. But the board — and the ritualized erasing and rewriting — is so central to Homicide that seeing it anywhere else feels like an homage at best, and a ripoff at worst.
  • Southland‘s bleeped-out cursing I guess it gives Detroit a “gritty” feeling? But it’s also sort of silly.
  • Lt. Fancy from NYPD Blue I know, it’s just James McDaniel, and now he’s Sgt. Longford, but still. The show’s jumpy camera work and reliance on Meaningful Glances is also very reminiscent of the ’90s stalwart.
  • Michael Imperioli’s hair from Life on Mars I know, it’s shorter here, but it’s still…longish? In a McDreamy kind of way? And it’s too reminiscent of the gone-too-soon Mars.

What did you think, PopWatchers? Did Detroit 1-8-7 distinguish itself enough for you, or were you having deja blue? (Because it’s a cop show! Blue! Oh, I slay myself.)

Casey Affleck sticks to the script on 'Tonight Show'

I think I’d like to play cards with Casey Affleck. The Oscar-nominated actor, who directed his brother-in-law Joaquin Phoenix in the apparently fake documentary, I’m Still Here, visited The Tonight Show last night to reiterate his recent claims that it was just a movie and that Phoenix’s public meltdowns were simply part of the act. But his poker-face wasn’t exactly a mask of conviction. Question: “Everybody was in on it at the time [when Phoenix appeared disheveled on Letterman]?” Answer: “Uhhhh, well, you know… [breaks eye contact and mindlessly tugs right earlobe]… neither Joaquin nor I never talked to Dave…” Question: ”Was it real drugs? Was he doing real coke in the movie?” Answer: “Uhhhhhhhhhhhhhh-hhhhhhhhhhhhh. No.” I suppose that’s better than, “Hmmm. Which scene?” READ FULL STORY »

'Law and Order: Criminal Intent' brings back Vincent D'Onofrio for one last kookball season

The Show That Will Not Die will live again! As EW’s Michael Ausiello announced, Law & Order: Criminal Intent will return for a victory-lap tenth season, with original star Vincent D’Onofrio blessing the world with more method-acting madness as Detective Bobby Goren. It’s only for eight episodes, and it’s almost certainly the last season, but let’s be honest, PopWatchers, this is great news. Incredible news. It’s like Christmas came early, and Santa Claus was a stubbly crazy-eyed mess, and Rudolph murdered all the other reindeer in a really pathologically-disturbing way, and Kathryn Erbe stood in the corner looking bemused. Criminal Intent will be back, and all is right with the world. READ FULL STORY »

Video sums up '90s childhood in 94 seconds. Where's the Floam?!

Perhaps it’s because I’m a member of the self-absorbed Facebook Generation — otherwise known as the Tell-My-Wall-How-Awesome-I-Look-Playing-Edward-Fortyhands Generation — but I feel society hasn’t fully embraced 1990s nostalgia yet. Seriously, we’ve had movies about the 1980s, Broadway shows about the 1980s, ill-conceived TV shows about the 1980s, but no love for the 1990s?! Well, excuse me while I go watch Clueless with some Tastetations and futuristic Orbitz soda! (Seriously, what am I going to do with all my butterfly clips if someone doesn’t throw a ’90s-themed party soon?)

Luckily, Buzzfeed has (briefly) filled the tragic vacancy of ’90s-related pop culture nostalgia by directing me to the video embedded below, “Your ’90s Childhood in 94 seconds.” Click after the jump to enjoy pangs of joy brought upon by footage of, among other things, Are You Afraid of the Dark?, Doug, and Pulp Fiction — wait, dear God, why were you watching Pulp Fiction as a child?! 'Saturday Night Live': New premiere promos featuring host Amy Poehler

Ahead of Amy Poehler’s return to Saturday Night Live for this Saturday’s season premiere, she and Andy Samberg stepped out of the studio for a series of rooftop promos, notable for several things: (1) Kudos for the Parks and Recreation love, which I hope will be repeated in some way, shape, or form during every skit this Saturday.* (2) Samberg is definitely the Garth in this relationship. (3) Poehler hasn’t seen The Town yet, or she simply has a grudge against Blake Lively. Or she’s joking.

'Community' set visit: Ken Jeong takes you behind the scenes

If there’s anything we’ve learned about the NBC sitcom Community, it’s that the show often thinks outside of the box. (What other program would devote an entire episode to an apocalyptic paintball battle, shoot an upcoming Christmas special with old-school stop-motion animation, or announce a “Twittersode” for Thursday’s season premiere?). So when I learned that Community would be hosting a “virtual” set visit, the idea seemed odd but entirely appropriate. During the visit, which was streamed live to members of the press, Ken Jeong (Señor Chang) led a cameraman around the Paramount Pictures lot while introducing us to various members of the cast and crew. Yes, the whole shebang essentially became an elaborate plug for the show’s Season One DVD set (out now), but it was amusing to see everyone in their natural habitat. And NBC should hire Jeong to host a semi-invasive set visit for all of the network’s shows. “Hello, this is Ken Jeong, here on the set of Law & Order: SVU — let’s investigate!”

After the jump, watch an extended clip from the set visit, plus an exclusive “interview” between Community creator Dan Harmon and cast members Ken Jeong and Yvette Nicole Brown. READ FULL STORY »

'Glee': It's season 2 premiere night!

glee-season-2Image Credit: Adam Rose/FoxSeason 2 of Glee kicks off tonight at 8 p.m. ET, to the joy of show choir nerds, EW staffers, and basically the entire world. Will Rachel and Finn start the school year together? (Will he give her relationship calendars another chance?) What about the future of Quinn and Puck? Where’s The ex-Mrs. Schue hiding out these days? What will Kurt wear on the first day of school? More importantly, what color tracksuit will Sue Sylvester be sporting?

It’s a new school year for New Directions, so it’s fitting they have a new opportunity to redeem themselves after failing to advance beyond Regionals. Thanks to a few OMG-inducing promos, we know that Mr. Schuester plants Nationals in the hearts and minds of his students, which will lead to a (possible fantasy?) performance of Jay-Z and Alicia Keys’ “Empire State of Mind.” They’ll also cover Travie McCoy’s “Billionaire,” and be introduced to a foreign exchange student, and future rival to Rachel Berry, played by international pop sensation Charice. Plus, John Stamos as Emma’s dentist love interest! (I guess she outgrew her intimacy problems?)

After you’ve watched (and rewatched, and rewatched…) head back here at 9 p.m. ET to give us your snap judgments on tonight’s premiere. And don’t forget to look for Tim Stack’s full recap at midnight. (UPDATE: Click to see the full Glee season premiere recap.) Calling all Gleeks: What are you most excited to see tonight?
