Lady Gaga's meat dress to be made into jerky

lady-gagaImage Credit: David Gabber/PR PhotosLady Gaga made headlines after sporting a meat dress at this year’s MTV Video Music Awards. Gaga told talk show host Ellen DeGeneres she meant no disrespect to vegans or vegetarians. “It has many interpretations — but for me, this evening, it’s that if we don’t stand up for what we believe in, if we don’t fight for our rights, pretty soon we’re gonna have as much rights as the meat on our bones. AND I am not a piece of meat.”

Okay, so Gaga didn’t entirely clear up the big question marks surrounding that evening’s fashion choice. Nor did she say anything about the future of her raw dress. Lady Gaga probably wouldn’t be caught wearing the same outfit twice, and this isn’t the sort of look that just retires to the back of your closet. (Unless, of course, your closet is some sort of meat-packing plant.)

The designer of the dress, Franc Fernandez, set the record straight when he told the MTV style blog the dress was, in fact, intended to be worn only once. But the now infamous meat garment is not headed for life in a deep freezer. Instead, “the dress will go through a process where it becomes a sort of ‘jerky’ and will be archived,” Fernandez told E!. Yum?

The thought of anyone eating Lady Gaga’s meat dress-turned-jerky grosses me out. Am I the only one? And does this mean there’s a jerky dress in our future? Let’s hope not.

Exclusive: Michael Emerson of 'Lost' on his new series with Terry O'Quinn

Filed under: Lost, Television, TV and tagged: , ,

Ben-Lost-Season5Say what you will about the way Lost wrapped up its six-year run, but few can deny that the rivalry between Island hero John Locke and Island rogue Benjamin Linus produced some awesome entertainment. Much of that had to do with the on-screen rapport of the show’s only acting Emmy winners, Terry O’Quinn and Michael Emerson. Both actors became close in the process of their TV sparring, and during the final season of the show, O’Quinn began talking aloud about the idea putting together a new show for him and Emerson. Now that dreaming is close to becoming reality: Yesterday, news broke that NBC was developing a new drama starring O’Quinn and Emerson produced by Lost co-creator JJ Abrams. The title and premise are hush-hush, but Abrams and co. were once kicking around a concept that would have the actors playing ex-black ops agents, entitled Odd Jobs. Sounds like the new Bruce Willis movie RED meets The Odd Couple. Whatever it is, we can’t wait to see it. Neither can Michael Emerson. We caught up with him via email and asked him for his reaction to the NBC pick-up. He couldn’t say much about the project itself — but as you can tell from his punctuation, he’s pretty !!! about the whole thing. READ FULL STORY »

Marvel studio head says Black Widow spin-off a possibility: Would it be any good?

Filed under: Movies and tagged: ,

Iron-Scarlett-JohanssonImage Credit: Francois DuhamelOut promoting next Tuesday’s DVD release of this summer’s Iron Man 2, Marvel studio head Kevin Feige confirmed that they are throwing around the idea of a Black Widow spin-off movie. The character, which was introduced in the Iron Man sequel and played by Scarlett Johansson, was the Soviet femme fatale that kicked major tail by the movie’s end, for those of you not fluent in superhero. “We’ve already started discussions with Scarlett about the idea of a solo movie and have begun putting together concepts, but The Avengers comes first,” said Feige to SuperHeroHype.

In theory, it sounds like a great idea. But in the past, superhero spin-offs have not fared well at the box office. Remember Catwoman, Halle Berry’s 2004 bust where she played Batman’s bad kitty? And what about Jennifer Garner’s 2005 Daredevil spin-off Elektra? In both cases, award-winning actresses crashed and burned in superhero flicks. Could Johansson break the curse with Black Widow?

Tell me, PopWatchers: Do you think the home run hitters at Marvel would be able to guide the Black Widow to success?

'The Office' fanisode: Who did the best [insert character name here]?

Filed under: Television, TV and tagged: , ,

Steve Carell is leaving The Office with no confirmed replacement in sight, but if the show is looking for someone to do voiceover work, they need look no further than this Office fanisode. In the just-released final cut of “Murder,” recreated by fans as part of a challenge, Michael Scott’s voice twin can be heard at the 17:09 minute mark of the video. His physical appearance is nothing like Carell’s — not to mention, I’m not sure if he’s watching the same version of The Office as the rest of us based on his styling choices — but the vocal resemblance is incredible. I would have been fooled into thinking it was Carell if I hadn’t been looking at the man speaking. Take a look and tell me if I’m imagining things. Warning: In the process, you might get sucked into watching the whole thing. It moves quick enough so you don’t get bored with the amateur acting, and some fans’ character interpretation were rather clever. (Like finger puppet Pam!)

Among my ultimate favorites were the girl who portrayed Pam at the 2:06 mark (because her mannerisms were dead-on), Stanley (as a Cleveland Brown action figure!) at 5:05, Jim on a stick at 5:40, and bald-cap Kevin at 7:10. Although, I have to admit that the best highlight had nothing to do with the characters or the episode; it was the woman in the white shorts lying on the floor at 19:38 because she really looks like she had no idea what was going on.

Check it out below if you’re so inclined, and tell me if you see anything noteworthy, PopWatchers. Are you in it? Which were the best character interpretations? Do you see any Hidden Gems?! READ FULL STORY »

'Sesame Street' parodies 'True Blood' with 'True Mud'

Filed under: Television, TV and tagged: , ,

True Blood seems like an odd pairing with a show that targets preschoolers (and just bowed to pressure from parents who didn’t want their children exposed to Katy Perry’s cleavage), but this Sesame Street parody of the TV-MA HBO series is rated G for everybody. No felt cleavage or nudity (translation: no Jason Stackhouse, sorry). Just a grouch with some stubble who wants true mud and doesn’t understand why a lesson in rhyming makes his waitress hard of hearing. Watch it below. READ FULL STORY »

Madonna's juniors line for Macy's launches: Do you want to be a Material Girl?

lourdes-madonnaMadonna famously told us in the 80s that we’re all just material girls living in a material world, but after looking at the selection of tutu skirts, shredded leggings, furry vests, and metallic bandeau tops in her new juniors line, I’m just not sure I want to be part of the MG club anymore.

Lady M debuted her juniors line, Material Girl, at New York City’s Macy’s last night, joined by design partner (and daughter) Lola Leon and the line’s spokesmodel, Taylor Momsen, who looked happy as a clam to be there. The women walked the pink carpet (so tween!) to celebrate the launch of the line that’s big on faux leather, the ’80s. and bustiers that seem mighty inappropriate for a 13-year-old.

What do you guys think of the line? Do you think Madonna has another career up her sleeve?

A 'Goodfellas' TV show: What, is this news funny? Does it amuse you?

GoodfellasImage Credit: Everett CollectionAs far back as I can remember, I always wanted to headline a post with this line from Goodfellas. Now I can, thanks to news from Deadline that a television series based on the classic mob movie appears to be in the works, and just in time for the film’s 20th anniversary. Nicholas Pileggi, the movie’s screenwriter and the author of Wiseguy, the book it’s based on, will likely be back to write the pilot, but the it’s unclear whether legendary director Martin Scorsese will have a hand in the production.

It seems as if everybody’s getting their shine box these days, between this, the premiere of Boardwalk Empire, and news that John Gotti Jr., the son of the notorious mob boss, is trying to get a movie made about his relationship with his father, the Teflon don. I really hope it’s called My Gotti and Me or, at the very least, You Gotti Be Kidding Me. So what’s with all the mobbery? Well, it’s already been three years since The Sopranos came to an — [CUT TO BLACK]. And maybe after the swell of Boston-Irish mahbstahs that populated the interim, America is aching for some good ol’ fashioned mafia-types with vowels at the end of their names. Gangsters have long held a tommy gun to the heart of pop culture, from Howard Hawks’ Scarface to Brian De Palma’s, The Public Enemy to The Departed, so it’s not like the genre has ever left for good. It just occasionally goes into witness protection for a while. READ FULL STORY »

'Top Model' makeover: Kayla or Budnick?

budnick-kayla-top-modelImage Credit: Kayla: Mathieu Young/The CWOn last night’s America’s Next Top Model‘s makeover episode, Tyra took Kayla’s perfectly lovely, curly blond locks and replaced them with the hair of Ronald McDonald (that is, when the clown was going through his Eight is Enough phase). The result? A hairdo that made her look astonishingly like a high-fashion Danny Cooksey, a.k.a. Salute Your Short‘s Budnick. (Or maybe I’ve just got ’90s on the brain.) Now, I suppose beauty is in the eye of the beholder — after all, our Top Model recapper, Margaret Lyons, liked the cut, saying Kayla, “got a Run Lola Run dye job and the grown-up version of Dora the Explorer’s haircut, but somehow looked awesome” — but I can’t help thinking the gorgeous Kayla deserved better than the loud, awful-waffle makeover.

Oh, Tyra, we hold you in our hearts. But when I think about this makeover, it makes me want to…give Kayla her old hair back. Whatever, she’ll rock it straight into the top 3. And it could always be worse.

Terry O'Quinn and Michael Emerson will reunite in a J.J. Abrams show

lost-oquinn-emersonImage Credit: ario Perez/ABC Record 20852039NBC has snapped up the rights to J.J. Abrams’ new series staring Lost alums Terry O’Quinn and Michael Emerson. Good gravy. The show, once titled Odd Jobs, follows two former black-ops cops. As long as they can work in some kind of guest appearance for Josh Holloway and Ken Leung, I can die happy.

Just kidding, I’ll never die. The idea of a Locke/Ben reunion is certainly thrilling, but when I want to see O’Quinn be sage and rugged, or Emerson be chilling and evil, I can watch Lost. In fact, I did watch Lost, for six long years, and even as a superfan, I’m not in the market for a redux. My sincere hope for this show is that it’s funny. Really funny. Smart, wry, and that these two dudes just looooove cracking each other up. I want the tonal opposite of Lost. I would like to be in on their jokes, for example.

Are you with me, PopWatchers? What would you want to see in a Locke/Ben reunion series? [NY Magazine]

'The Defenders' premiere: Go all in or fold?

Filed under: Television, TV and tagged: , ,

defenders-oconnell-belushi_320.jpg Image Credit: Robert Voets/CBSI’ll admit it now: I have a soft spot for Jerry O’Connell. I met him once at a press event for his 2001 movie Tomcats, and he signed a box containing a promotional pair of boxers “Keep puttin’ em behind bars” for my lawyer sister, who was then with the D.A.’s office. Though I can’t recall the specifics, I remember that he also entertained a handful of strangers with a story about a young woman who’d just shot him down. He’s not suave like a Clooney, but he’s effortlessly charming in his own way. It’s something that works well for him in CBS’ new legal The Defenders, which centers on two Las Vegas defense attorneys who care more about their clients than you’d expect them to: Jim Belushi’s Nick Morelli, a separated father who isn’t afraid to roll the dice on strategy, and O’Connell’s Pete Kaczmarek, a playboy with expensive taste in clothes and cars who’s sleeping with a woman in the D.A.’s office (Justified‘s Natalie Zea, in a recurring role) even though they despise one another.
