'The Event': Laura Innes will not be bribed (even by her 9-year-old daughter, who's tried)

Filed under: Television, TV and tagged: ,

the-event-innesImage Credit: Trae Patton/NBCPlaying Sophia, the leader of the mysterious detainees on NBC‘s The Event (Mondays, 9 p.m. ET), does come with its advantages for Laura Innes. For instance, when she asked the producers, “So what’s the deal?” on her second meeting with them, they actually told her enough of the plot to make her jaw drop. “They have it all arc’d out, and my character, I’m assuming, knows the most about what the end game is. So I know, and Jason [Ritter] and Blair [Underwood] are in the dark, which is as it should be. I think that I’m the only trustworthy person on that show obviously,” she joked to EW this morning. “They’re trying to trick me into telling them, often. They’ll just try to toss it out. ‘So, Laura… what’s with that event?’ My kids are going crazy. My nine-year-old daughter, every morning: ‘Tell me what the event is, mother.’ But I can’t tell.” Let’s see what we can get out of her:

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: Who’s the hardest person to keep the secret from?
LAURA INNES:
I think Jason, just because he’s so sweet. You kind of want to tell him everything about your life. And he’s a good listener. So I kind of wanted to tell him. But I have been good at keeping it from him.

What’s the best bribe someone has offered you?
That would have to be my daughter, who said, “I will give you a quarter if you tell me what the event is.” I was like, “Tempting. But I think you have to keep that quarter for yourself.” I’m amazed. We were just doing Kathie Lee and Hoda and half the guys on the crew were like [shouts], “What happened to the plane?” “What’s the event?” So people are interested. We’re happy. We just want them to be more interested. READ FULL STORY »

'The Social Network': New clips of smart dudes talking really fast!

Yahoo! Movies has released a series of new clips from the highly anticipated David Fincher film, The Social Network, which opens Friday. All in all, it just makes me more psyched to see the film this weekend. That is, if I can nab a ticket — After all, it’s already been hailed as one of the best movies of the year.

In terms of the newly released clips, one of the best ones is this short moment between Jesse Eisenberg and Andrew Garfield in which Eisenberg, playing Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, starts plotting out a loose plan for the groundbreaking site. Also, Garfield is for some reason wearing a sombrero, which makes the scene all the more awesome. READ FULL STORY »

Patton Oswalt circling 'Juno' team's next movie: Could this finally make him an A-lister?

Filed under: News and tagged:

patton-oswaltImage Credit: Lester Cohen/WireImage.comIt’s a safe bet that Young Adult is a movie that will receive a lot of attention next year. Not only will the upcoming project reunite Juno‘s screenwriter (Diablo Cody), director (Jason Reitman), and studio producers, but, as reported by EW’s Nicole Sperling, it’s also likely to star two great actors, Charlize Theron and Patrick Wilson. As impressive as all that is, I haven’t even mentioned what is arguably the coolest name associated with Young Adult: Patton Oswalt, who Sperling reports might soon be cast as “as a self-hating man who was in love with Theron’s character in high school.”

Sounds great. Oswalt is one hilarious guy, as increasing numbers of moviegoers have come to realize in recent years. He starred in last year’s well-received indie flick Big Fan, and he voiced the lead rodent in 2007′s Pixar hit Ratatouille, but neither of those projects has quite succeeded in making him a recognizable movie star. Could Young Adult change that? Without having seen a single frame, or really knowing anything about the project aside from some plot elements and the list of other potential talent, I’m going to say the answer is yes. At least, I hope so.

What about you? Do you think this movie sounds like a good fit for Oswalt’s talents? Do you think it will give his profile a deserved boost?

'The Buried Life' video: Dave gets his butt kicked for your amusement

Filed under: TV and tagged:

In Fight Club, the doucheboat neo-fascist Tyler Durden memorably asks, “How much can you know about yourself if you’ve never been in a fight?” The Buried Life‘s Dave Lingwood must have been pondering that same question. In an upcoming episode of MTV’s bucket-list reality show (the second season kicks off tonight at 10:30), he sets a goal for himself: “I want to fight a really good fighter.” That leads to a brutal month of training, which culminates in a showdown with an actual Ultimate Fighter.

EW talked to Dave about his training regimen (check out the video after the jump) and his backup plan (hint: breakdance-fighting!) about six hours before the big fight. (Look for the episode in early November.)

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: What’s it been like training for the fight?
DAVE LINGWOOD:
The last month has been an endless Rocky montage. In the mornings I’ll go and do either a run or a class. At nights I’ll do sparring and Muay Thai. I also went into training with a Shaolin monk and learned some crazy pressure-point accuracy stuff. I don’t think I’ll ever be able to use it, but it was just cool to hang out with this 80-year-old Shaolin monk with a mullet.

My ear is blown, I’ve fractured my nose… It’s just been so, so intense. I’m the youngest of three boys, and I’ve been getting butt kicked my whole life. So it’s nice to take out that aggression on someone else. READ FULL STORY »

'Undercover Boss' season premiere: Did you cry?

Filed under: Reality TV, Television, TV and tagged: ,

undercover-bossDoes every boss on CBS’ Undercover Boss end up crying, or is Steve Joyce, the president and CEO of Choice Hotels International, just particularly emotional? Not that you could blame him, really. A woman shared her life story as she showed him how to do everything in the hotel during her solo overnight shift: She had her first child at 16, her parents kicked her out and told her she’d never be good at anything, and now she, her kids, and her fiancé, who’s been laid off, live with his father. Joyce was so impressed by this woman’s resiliency that he’s going to get her on-track to become a front office manager. He’s also sending her and her family on that week’s vacation to San Antonio she’s been saving for and will pay her rent for six months so they can get a place of their own. What’s wonderful: Just hearing what an inspiration she was from Joyce would’ve been totally enough for this woman. Just like a maintenance man who’s worked two jobs, seven days a week, for seven years to put his son through med school would’ve been happy just to get the golf cart Joyce promised him so he could get around the property more efficiently. But Joyce is also setting up a scholarship program and making that man’s son the first recipient. Eyes wet again.

I know I’m being manipulated, but I now get why people watch this show: Today, people are either out of work or working themselves to death — in all professions. It can often feel as though no one has the time to offer you a hand because they’re struggling to handle their own lives. Seeing people recognized for their effort with rewards that will change their lives dramatically for years to come is a reminder that even though your life may suck, there’s still goodness out there. And that hope, in some viewers eyes, is worth feeling like a tissue-grabbing ass for an hour.

Watch the clips below. Ten to one you cry. READ FULL STORY »

John Stamos on 'Glee': 'Kids can't sing without teeth, right?'

Filed under: Glee, Television, TV and tagged: , ,

Have mercy, PopWatchers! John Stamos makes his Glee debut on tomorrow night’s Britney Spears-themed episode. Here’s what we know of Dr. Carl: He’s a dentist, particularly interested in educating young people about the importance of oral hygiene, who has begun dating Will’s one time flame Emma Pillsbury. Obviously Stamos can sing, so it’s only a matter of time before they give him his own song, right? (Or will it be a duet with Emma? Or Will?) Check out the sneak peek below. READ FULL STORY »

'Dancing With the Stars': Derek Hough on dancing with Jennifer Grey and shirtless paparazzi snaps

derek-houghImage Credit: MAP/Splash News; Adam Larkey/ABCDance pro Derek Hough, 25, and his partner Jennifer Grey, 50, earned the top spot on last week’s Dancing With the Stars season 11 performance premiere with a Viennese waltz set to “These Arms of Mine” (a song featured on the Dirty Dancing soundtrack). Below, Derek checks in for his weekly grilling.

Derek, where are you going in this photo? Do you think the rule “No shirt no shoes no service” does not apply to you?
We were actually at rehearsal and I was super sweaty and needed to change my shirt. Jennifer had hidden my clothes, though, so I was forced to walk out to the parking lot to my car for a change of clothes without a shirt on. I will get her back though. Someday, when she least expects it.

Are you aware that your belt is not exactly doing its job here?

As long as my pants are not on the ground, the belt is succeeding. READ FULL STORY »

Guillermo del Toro makes DreamWorks Animation his 'home'

Guillermo-del-ToroImage Credit: Kevin Winter/Getty ImagesGuillermo del Toro and DreamWorks Animation announced this morning that the studio will be the director’s “home” for animation projects. He’s now an executive producer for Puss in Boots, and the studio bought the rights to his story Trollhunters, which DreamWorks “plans to produce a 3D animated feature film, which will be written and directed by del Toro himself,” the company said in a statement.

I’m pretty much for anything that makes it easier for Guillermo del Toro to make more movies, and if he can encourage the studio to chill on all the Shrek-related projects, so much the better. (Let’s cover some new territory, people.) I’d love to see another studio give Pixar a run for its money, and if anyone can pull off evocative, unique, and captivating, it’s del Toro.

What do you think, PopWatchers? Are you ready for del Toro’s new animation empire to take over? Or are you still smarting over The Hobbit?

Katy Perry laughs off 'Sesame Street' controversy on 'SNL': What do you think?

Filed under: Music, TV and tagged: ,

katy-perry-elmo-shirtKaty Perry was the musical guest on Saturday Night Live‘s season premiere this weekend, just in time for her to address that silly Sesame Street cleavage scandal from a few days prior. Perry dropped by SNL‘s Bronx Beat sketch in an Elmo t-shirt cut even lower than the outfit she wore on Sesame Street. She was playing (ha) a children’s library volunteer who’d gotten in trouble for her revealing attire. Perry didn’t say much of note, mostly just letting her clothing and the chatty Bronx Beat ladies played by Maya Rudolph and Amy Poehler get all the laughs.

And then Maya Rudolph got real. “Who cares if kids are looking at boobs?” she asked rhetorically. “Boobs feed babies…I turned on CSI the other night, and there’s a dead guy with a worm in his eye. But we can’t look at the tops of boobs?” Delivered in a goofy voice or not, it’s a pretty good point. Why do some Americans freak out so furiously about body parts — even harmless, mostly covered body parts? There was really nothing inappropriately sexual about what Perry wore on Sesame Street, unless creepy adults chose to read it that way. This whole non-issue is ridiculous, in my opinion, making a ridiculous SNL sketch the perfect way to respond.

But maybe you’ll disagree. Watch Katy Perry’s SNL skit after the jump if you haven’t seen it yet (clip via E!), then let us know what you think. Was this an appropriate way for Perry to respond to the Sesame Street controversy or not? READ FULL STORY »
