Michelle Rodriguez to kick ass in 'Citizen Jane'? Kinda, sorta.

citizen-jane-posterAt the Austin Fantastic Fest, a short campy trailer of Michelle Rodriguez growling and shooting a machine gun on an island of fire gun played to the appreciative audience. (See it embedded after the jump.) The trailer, and the accompanying posters of a black clad Rodriguez holding a gun, promised a remake of Orson Welles’ 1941 classic Citizen Kane. In Citizen Jane, with an announced release date of Sept. 5, 2011, Rodriguez would play a woman looking to avenge the murders of her parents. Various websites wondered if this was a spoof or a camp delight worth getting ready for.

It turns out that Austin-based filmmaker Aaron Burns conceived of the Citizen Jane push at Fastastic Fest as a mean to grassroots promote his upcoming feature debut Blacktino, the story of an overweight half-black, half-Hispanic nerd struggling to find his place in predominantly white Austin high school starring Danny Trejo, Jeff Fahey, and Daryl Sabara. “In Blacktino,” Burns explains by email, “the main character watches a trailer for a film called Citizen Jane, which features Michelle doing even more ridiculously awesome things… Michelle came down for the last day of production and gave me almost enough badass footage to make a full movie.”

Now that the Citizen Jane trailer is out in the world, Burns is having conversations about that actual possibility (as well as the possibility that he is a blasphemer of the first degree). “You know it’s funny because this Citizen Jane idea came out of my head as a joke from day one. Now, I’m actually getting offers from people who want to make it, and emails from others who want to see me dead for spitting on Orson Welles’ grave.” Burns is hoping to premiere Blacktino at the SXSW Film Festival in 2011.

What do you guys think? Should Burns’ next film be Citizen Jane? Is this grassroots marketing at its finest? Does the skeleton of Blacktino intrigure?

Further proof that everyone but Hollywood wants Michelle Rodriguez to get her own action movie. She’s been the sidekick for too long.

I was upset she died in “Avatar”… As she has gotten older, I have grown to really like her. She should definitely be in the sequel to The Expendables.

      • Xena Warrior Princess

M-Rod in the expendables 2? Brilliant idea!

I was sad that everyone DIDN’T die in Avatar. That movie was the most overrated crapfest in years.

I think the warning about Michelle Rodriguez annihilating you if you talk during a movie should be shown before every movie.

      I agree.

      I completely agree as well!

    That’s awesome.

This was a fun, creative and goofy way to promote another project.

I thought it was definetly a unique, interesting and smart way to promote a movie. Look, now adays one must find different ways of promoting a movie… I think is super cool of Michelle to do this for a small film. She rocks!And.. must say that a movie headed by Michelle Rodriguez (who I thought was amazing in her debut “Girlfight”) would be kick ass – just like she is in real life.

Love watching her in movies. She doesn’t get nearly enough work as she should. I would watch Citizen Jane.

Michelle Rodriquez definitely rocks. Actually, I think she should be the next XXX, her and Samuel L. Jackson would be pretty cool.

What made me most excited in this post? That Lapidus is going to be in another film!!!!!

I’d like to see more of the footage Burns shot with Rodriguez before saying there should be a Citizen Jane movie, but damn! That’s hot! So, why the hecate not?

Put Jeff Fahey and Jessica Alba in it and I’m there!

  • Xena Warrior Princess

M-Rod is getting hotter as she gets older

I love Michelle! I agree that she doesn’t get as much work as she should. Whenever Blue Crush is on TV, I have to watch it just to see the few scenes she is in.

Is it just me, but for the life me I have no idea what she is saying after she fires the gun. There’s too much ambient noise that when she speaks it literally sounds like nonsense.

    What am I missing?

      @ Duran “Thats right bitches.”
