The toughest thing for Hathaway is pulling off a northern accent for Em (Em’s from Leeds I think). It is very distinctive and totally different to the typical Cockney accent you Yanks hear in Guy Ritchie films and completely at odds with gentry-like accents you hear in ‘Becoming Jane’ and other period dramas. Best thing to do is spend time in that part of the country and live with Northerners. The accent is the equivalent of a very thick Texan accent (difficult to authentically replicate.)
I’m also not that fond of Hathaway. Her British accent in Becoming Jane was pretty bad. I really hope she improved it for this role.
Oh Jim Sturgess, I’ve missed you!
I liked Anne’s accent in Becoming Jane , her different accents in Valentine’s Day, and her glorious imitation of Julie Andrews on SNL ( it was impeccable).
Since someone brought up Henry Cavill, why can’t he have a bigger career ? He has the looks, sexiness, charisma, and acting talent.
ha! i just ordered the book last week on amazon uk, after perusing its bestseller list looking for a book to read ! should be arriving anytime soon
oh and me too i’m a fan of british romantic comedies always! they’re the best!
I am disappointed with this casting. Anne Hathaway is always herself in each movie, and Emma has such a clear voice in the book.
