Image Credit: Everett CollectionIn a development that is sure to bring tears to the eyes of anyone with a heart, Oprah Winfrey has announced she will reunite the cast of The Sound of Music on her Oct. 29 show. What’s that sound, you ask? Why, it’s the hills, alive with the sound of my excitement! Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer will be in attendance — an “Edelweiss” performance better be on the show’s schedule — as well as the Von Trapp kids: Charmian Carr (“Liesl”), Nicholas Hammond (“Friedrich”), Heather Menzies-Urich (“Louisa”), Duane Chase (“Kurt”), Angela Cartwright (“Brigitta”), Debbie Turner (“Marta”), and Kym Karath (“Gretl”). It will be the first time in 45 years the Music cast has been together. Be sure to mark your DVRs now — that is, if you haven’t done so already — and to tide you over, click after the jump to watch of my favorite performances…which I may or may not have tried to recreate as a child. (Like you haven’t!)
Are you excited for the Music reunion PopWatchers? What’s your favorite tune from the flick?

I hope Oprah asks Christopher Plummer about his infamous “Sound of Mucus” comment.
He was my first movie star crush. I was 7, it was 1985, I just was not into the Brat Pack. I have never heard of this comment. Googling now.
It’s mentioned in Charmain Carr’s memoir–”Forever Liesel.” Definitely recommend it for any and all Sound of Music fans. It’s really good.
Yay!!! Im excited, one of my most favorite movies! And I agree, Edelweiss better be sung!
Slight problem: Plummer’s voice was dubbed in the original movie. He’s now over 80, still in great shape and top of his form as an actor, but singing?
Don’t bet on it.
I really don’t think Plummer’s singing was dubbed. They would have gotten someone with a better voice and range if it was.
Plummer’s singing voice was dubbed by the talented Bill Lee.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bill_Lee_%28singer%29
But it was standard practice at that time in Hollywood. A shame however that the singers were frequently uncredited.
Sorry Dicazi, but his voice was in fact dubbed. It’s well known that Bill Lee provided the Captain’s singing voice.
You are uninformed going on just wrong.
Bill Lee had a beautiful singing voice, and it was such a good match for Christopher Plummer’s speaking voice that it managed to fool you.
I was just going to add that to the comments, glad you did. He did the singing and during the editing they decided it would work so….
Also, Julie Andrews can’t sing anymore after that botched surgery.
Uh, that WAS Christopher Plummer’s REAL voice! I have the soundtrack from the movie and his name is listed for singing the songs especially Edelweiss!! And I think at some point there was also something he won for his singing in this movie. Other versions of the song was sung by that other guy I’m sure, but not in this movie.
I just looked it up and everything says that Plummer WAS dubbed by Lee. I had always assumed since Edelweiss was sung so softly that it was sung by an untrained singer.
LOVE that movie, but I wish they’d dubbed Charmaine Carr’s voice; better yet, her presence. She was AWFUL, IMNSHO. I couldn’t believe she was the best among the girls who auditioned for the part. Bad actress, bad dancer, nauseating singer. Everyone else was fabulous.
Are you kidding me? Her voice was beautiful – charming and melodic and perfect! Her dancing was fine – no one really had to dance – she was gorgeous and I think one of the best of the cast!!
Does anyone else feel like they’ve seen a reunion of the “kids” before? I though there has been one in the past, I just can’t remember anything about it…
I think there was a reunion at some other anniversary, but if my memory serves me right, it was just the “Von Trapp” kids. I don’t think Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer were there.
They did reunite on their 40th anniversary. My cousin is Kym Karath who played the darling little Gretl!
She has grown into a gorgeous woman!
Wait until you see her!!!!!
LOL A local bookstore used to play this instead of a closing announcement. Everybody got the message.
I love that!
I’m actually interested in this. I’m a sucker for reunions.
Just texted my gf with this news. (She can recite the entire movie from memory up to the wedding.)
She’s kinda bummed that we can’t set the DVR this far in advance.
funny, I basically know every word up until the wedding too…that scene always seems to throw me off.
Same here. For me I think it’s bc my firste exposure to the movie was on network TV and I think they cut the actual wedding scene to make time for commercials, so whenever we get to that scene in throws me off. But I love this movie. Can’t wait. WIll have to watch Oprah.
We all know the movie up until the wedding because as kids, that was when our parents said, “OK, that’s good enough, time for you to go to bed!”
I was thinking the same thing. I can’t get to Oct. 29 yet on my TiVo
!
add a reminder in your phone to set your dvr a couple days in advance.
Huh, just so happens a new version of the movie is coming out on DVD and Blu-ray around that time. Coincidence?
Obviously not, you idiot. It’s called promotion.
Jim, you rock!!!
Maybe, maybe not.
But there’s been a bagillion re-editions and anniversary editions and special editions since VHS and DVD technologies were created, and this is the first time in all of that time that they’ll be re-united. So I do think that their reunion is the special event here, not whatever re-edition is going on around the same date (though it may well have given them the pretext).
Personally, as a lifelong fan of the Sound of Music (or La Mélodie du bonheur; that’s right, I can recite it all in two languages), I just hope Oprah doesn’t take over and rather allows her guest to shine on their own.
Excellent point, Freddie! She’s not much for standing back though. :-\
I also recommend the book Forever Liesl. I see she now has a second one out; I’ll have to give it a look.
If I remember, I’ll tape/watch it.
The big O is really pulling out all the stops for her FINAL season. Hope we can hold out to the last show. I’m sure she is going to try to do something way, way over the top.
I’m excited…except i dont have a dvr!
hopefully they will put it online!
I don’t have a DVR either – I hope EW gives us a link to the clip….hint hint, Tim!
I’m more excited that this is Oprah’s final season. Don’t let the door hit you on the way out.
Well,I bet she could care less what you think and by the way, going on to bigger and better…So, get over it!
Well, she managed to excite you then.
Whoo hoo!
OMG! This is my ‘Glee’!
Awesome! I marked my calendar for this fabulous reunion.
I’m kvelling!
Debbie Turner was my florist for my wedding and she did a fabulous job! I have to admit, I was totally excited to meet ‘Marta’!
