A 'Goodfellas' TV show: What, is this news funny? Does it amuse you?

GoodfellasImage Credit: Everett CollectionAs far back as I can remember, I always wanted to headline a post with this line from Goodfellas. Now I can, thanks to news from Deadline that a television series based on the classic mob movie appears to be in the works, and just in time for the film’s 20th anniversary. Nicholas Pileggi, the movie’s screenwriter and the author of Wiseguy, the book it’s based on, will likely be back to write the pilot, but the it’s unclear whether legendary director Martin Scorsese will have a hand in the production.

It seems as if everybody’s getting their shine box these days, between this, the premiere of Boardwalk Empire, and news that John Gotti Jr., the son of the notorious mob boss, is trying to get a movie made about his relationship with his father, the Teflon don. I really hope it’s called My Gotti and Me or, at the very least, You Gotti Be Kidding Me. So what’s with all the mobbery? Well, it’s already been three years since The Sopranos came to an — [CUT TO BLACK]. And maybe after the swell of Boston-Irish mahbstahs that populated the interim, America is aching for some good ol’ fashioned mafia-types with vowels at the end of their names. Gangsters have long held a tommy gun to the heart of pop culture, from Howard Hawks’ Scarface to Brian De Palma’s, The Public Enemy to The Departed, so it’s not like the genre has ever left for good. It just occasionally goes into witness protection for a while.

I don’t know how a Goodfellas TV show might end up, seeing how iconic the movie is. I still can’t listen to “Layla” without seeing a parade of dead bodies, and I expect all clowns to go into a Joe Pesci routine. But judging from how much I enjoyed the pilot of Boardwalk Empire — although I must admit I was a little disappointed that the Atlantic City hotels weren’t red, box-shaped, and cost $200 to build — I’d welcome a pop culture comeback with a kiss on both cheeks.

What do you think, PopWatchers? Excited by the prospect of a Goodfellas show, or have you gotten your fill playing Mafia Wars?

Goodfellas could work but then again, look what happened to Crime Story which was an awesome show!

NO!!! How about an original idea?

  • MikeNJD

    no, No, NO, NO!!, NOOOOOO!!!!!!!!

  • chris

it could work on hbo and showtime but on anyother network it would destroy the legacy of this movie. This could still happen but if the original screen writer and scorsese are involved i’m in to watch it.

Will this be a cable show? Because I won’t watch a show with a bunch of mobsters saying “forget you” instead of “f@%# you.”

    • Ken

      agreed.. hbo for sure

Goodfella’s is a masterpiece. There can be no such things as “new and improved” with Goodfella’s. Any type of tinkering would denigrate the movie

Great article. I think the show would work better as a sitcom

I love, love, LOVE this film but…Goodfellas without Martin Scorsese, Ray Liotta, Paul Sorvino, Joe Pesci, Robert De Niro, or Lorraine Bracco? No.

Any time I hear something from or about Goodfellas, I think of the pigeons from Animaniacs…I associate the personalities and stuff with them more than Goodfellas, cuz I didn’t see the movie until a couple of years ago! LOL

That would be The Goodfeathers, a cute parody of Goodfellas.

I LOVED LOVED LOVED the movie, Goodfellas, since the very first time I saw it….. it caught my attention from the younger characters blue eyes, to just the folding out of events in the movie… ok I got one….. (this part always gets me) when big polly is carefully, thinely sliceing a clove of garlic with a razor… Veryyy ghetto….. and the fact that they were living like a lil vaca in jail….. ne ways…. I can’t wait to see how the new television series chalks up to the old, classic film…. “WAAATCHOUTT!!!!!!!!!” lol… that just reminds me of the movie….

They already did a TV series version of Good Fellas. It was called the Sopranos. Had practically the same cast.
You couldn’t do a GF TV show without Joe Pesci, and you couldn’t bring his character back from the dead. So, no.

  • Julz

No I don’t like this idea. Goodfellas is a classic. I wish they would come up with something original.

  • tgb

Since all the characters end up wither dead, in jail, or witness protection, all you have is the name.

Why not just call it Son of the Sopranos and be done with it?

  • JK

Everyone seems to think that the show would be picking up where the movie left off, but that’s not how I see it. I think they mean to retell the whole story from the beginning, not show us how life in witness protection turned out.

  • Clete

You have got to be kidding. What moron came up with idea of taking one of the better movies to come along in awhile and make a mindless T.V. show about it. I agree with the posts about finding something orginal. Doesn’t anyone in television land do anything but find other shows to rip off?
