In Gnomeo and Juliet, a retelling of William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, due out Feb. 11, the red gnomes and the blue gnomes have been enemies forever. So when Gnomeo, a blue gnome, falls in love with Juliet, (yup you guessed it!) a red gnome, their garden escapades are forbidden. Whatever will are our star-crossed gnome lovers do? The movie features the voices of Emily Blunt and James McAvoy, and the music of Elton John. Watch the trailer after the jump:
I’ve seen (and often snap my fingers while watching) other iterations of this Shakespeare classic. So let’s hope for the kids’ sake, Disney takes some liberties with the ending. Have these gnomes piqued your interest? Or will you be passing on this 3-D flick?

Clearly this is what Shakespeare had in mind when he wrote it.
Actually, it means why.
Somewhere out there Shakespeare is rolling in his grave.
At the same time as an avid Shakespeare fan…I’m kind of interested. It looks cute!
Pass.
looks adorable? and.. i’m sorry i’ll say it – james mcavoy is even hot as a cartoon gnome.
i love the part when Gnomeo lets the fish be free and it sinks down to the sand. so funny and so sad at the same time!!
Yea…apart from the goldfish part everything else in that trailer just screamed no
Interesting way to introduce kids to suicide.
I thought it was funny. There have been sooo many interpretations of Shakespeare’s classic and those include the cute and funny so all you intellects can just calm down. It’s going to be a cute movie.
the only bad thing about this is that it will probably teach kids a wrong version of Romeo and Juliet. I am going to guess that the two gnomes are going to kill themselves so when these kids grow up and read the play in school they are going to think it will be a happy ending.
this looks like a lot of fun!-definitely going to see this with my kids when it comes out..it looks super cute too!
I’ve been aware of this movie since April 2006, so it’s a long time coming. As a rabid Shakespeare geek, the trailer makes it look awful. Simply having two warring families and a young couple in love does not alone make it worthy of the allusion to Romeo and Juliet anymore than Simba’s dad getting killed by Scar, Simba’s uncle, makes it a good idea to rename Lion King as Hamlet.
Will I be going? Yup. Just wish I had higher hopes.
Not to be a smartass, but because I am a smartass, I’m going to point out that “wherefor” actually means “why” not “where.”

i’m on board..i’ll take my kids to this for certain..it looks charming!
