John Goodman cast in Kevin Smith horror movie

John-GoodmanImage Credit: Albert L. Ortega/PR PhotosKevin Smith’s Red State, which has been in the works for ages, finally started shooting this week, and it landed its biggest star, too: John Goodman. Red State is a relatively low-budget horror movie about a crazed fundamentalist preacher, based on Fred Phelps. The cast also includes Michael Angarano, Kyle Gallner, Melissa Leo, Nick Braun, and Anna Gunn.

As someone who saw King Ralph in the theater, twice, I suppose I qualify as a Goodman fangirl, and I like Kevin Smith’s low-budget movies more than his big-budget ones (give me Chasing Amy over Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back any day). Throw in horror fundamentalism, and consider my ticket pre-ordered. What about you, PopWatchers? Are you also Goodman completists?

It’s a horror movie called “Red State”. LMAO

  • Jeff

I can’t wait until this movie comes out, gets the horrible reviews that all of Smith’s movies deserve and then Kevin Smith begins his rants as to why the reviewers and the public were wrong for hating his film. Gotta love that he doesn’t get just how bad he is at making movies.

    • Victor

Actually, if you listen to one of his podcasts, he constantly insults himself and his directing.

      • Craig

Apparently you missed the review for “Cop Out” right here on this website, when KS came on to the message boards to rant and rave against Owen Gleiberman for giving that turd a deservedly low rating.

      • Stacie

I love Kevin Smith, but Cop Out was really bad.

      • Tom Cruise

Yes, because its impossible for anyone other than Kevin Smith to write “Kevin Smith” in the ‘your name’ field.

      • Devin Faraci

It will be total crap, just like Cop Out. Can’t wait to see it tank!

      • MW

“Cop Out” wasn’t really a Kevin Smith movie though. He didn’t write any of it,he was only hired to direct.

Why would you read an article about a movie by Kevin Smith if you don’t like his movies? I think you have too much time on your hands and just wanted something to b*t*h about. Why don’t you go back to your lame life and let the rest of us enjoy the fact that John Goodman (wonderful actor) is in a Kevin Smith (wonderful movie maker)movie.Snoogins.

  • Ayn

Wow… Goodman looks like he’s lost a lot of weight! Good for him. I don’t care for horror movies, but am interested to see how JG performs in that genre.

  • Cris

Aren’t most Kevin Smith movies a horror?

  • LOL

Awesome. Freaks like Phelps should be exposed.

  • Josie

I’m a fan of Kevin Smith, and a fan of Michael Angarano, and I’ve never not liked John Goodman, so I will see it. Plus, horror film named Red State – it’s already thinking outside the box

  • Sara

I love Kevin Smith movies and it bums me out that no one sees them – Zack and Miri was one of the best romcoms I’ve seen in a while. So, definitely stoked for this!

    • Myke25

I agree, Sara. Z&M was a riot! The only Smith movie I haven’t seen is Jersey Girl. The rest all have LOL moments!

  • Jeff from Jersey; yes New Jersey

Anything Mr. Goodman does is golden to me. In fact, he wus robbed in not getting an award for his protrayl of the late Governor Huey Long. This is going to be good.

    • Francisco

I completely agree! Kingfish was a great made for TV movie.

  • Trixie

I’ll be honest, I laughed out loud at “Goodman fangirl.” That’s just not something you hear every day. I love the guy too. I’m interested in this!

  • Another Jeff from Jersey

I LOVE John Goodman. The guy is just a blast to watch, in anything. Remember Joe Dante’s “Matinee?” Now there’s a buried treasure — Goodman was awesome as a William Castle-like horror movie mogul of the 60s. I’ll definitely be checking out “Red State.”

    • Frank Coffey

Goodman was classic in Matinee as William Castle character. Castle suddenly all over, 15 pix festival at Film Forum in NY and another in LA at Cinefamily during October.

  • Lia

I love him, I love Kevin Smith, this works for me!

  • Stephanie T.

Kevin Smith has had some ok movies. Clerks, Zack and Miri, and Dogma were the better of the bunch. Still he has to realize that snarky remarks cannot make up 100 percent of a script because they BECOME the script.

  • saint of E. 69th st

love goodman and smith but horror movies are the worst piece of crap ever produced by mankind what inane drivel like P.T. Barnum said…there is a sucka born every minute..

  • mike n

as great as red state sounds hopefully when it does come out it will make us forget about cop out which is the worst film of his career period.

  • Ren

I love Kevin Smith. I’m a huge fan of his. Even though he’s had a couple movies that weren’t quite my taste, I still love his style and will support his work. Can’t wait for Red State!
