Some of the humor was more risque than what I usually see on television, but I laughed out loud at parts. Nyambi Nyambi is a great actor and should be given a more expansive role!

  • Mary Sims

They’re fat. I don’t watch fat people on television because I see fat people everywhere I go in town. Way to promote healthiness, TV people.

    • Katja

You do understand that this show is not promoting fatness? The two leads meet at an Overeaters Anonymous meeting, indicating that they are trying to overcome their unhealthy habits, and the one preview clip of the show that I saw had the female lead working out on an elliptical machine while her mother and sister ate chocolate cake. Way to jump on the gun on being holier-than-thou.

      • Katja

LOL oops, I meant jump the gun. Clearly I jumped the gun on posting my comment before fully editing it. :)

THANK YOU! Somebody with some common sense and actual commentary worth reading.

You don’t watch fat people on television because they don’t exist. Well, fat women, anyhow.

  • Mary Sims

PS: Obesity isn’t funny. Its gross and its going to cost us all. Slender or optimal weight people are now a minority. Fat people, stop the eating and take a walk so you can live to see your grandchildren!

    • Topper

I’m fat. I eat 1000 to 1500 calories a day. I walk, jog or go to the gym five days a week for 30-60 minutes depending on my workload. I’ve been living this way for over a year. So stop assuming everyone who is overweight is chowing down chips and sitting on the couch. Talk about about ignorant. (And how many slim people smoke cigarettes or eat McDonalds every day? I don’t assume slim people are healthy or sickly–just that they’re slim.)

    • elizabeth

Ditto Topper. Plus, overweight people and the issues associated with being overweight are statistically correlated to the rise in unregulated corporate farming and use of high fructose corn syrup, along with flat incomes making the choice of buying broccoli or soda pop impossible for poor families, who have no choice, broccoli costs twice as much. Empty calories to feed their children are better than no calories. Learn the issues please before pontificating.

Not to mention something like food addictions, medication side-effects, genetics etc. It is a LOT more complicated that just not putting food in my mouth. Of course, Ms Sims is now on the popular bandwagon of bashing fat people because we are the last group it is socially acceptable to hate on. I wish I was perfect like Ms Sims.

I’ve battled weight issues my whole life, maintaining a low weight only by starving myself. A serious injury last year has made exercise impossible. By your standards, I’m probably fat. By mine, you’re pathetically uninformed and ignorant, and that Ms Sims, is truly gross.

How the F*** is it costing you? I work full-time and have premium insurance. You pay NOTHING. Everyone has a different story. I gained my weight after a MCL tear, and then getting Carpal Tunnel Syndrome because of work. I also have diabetes. Despite all that, I refuse Worker’s Comp. My choices for exercising are swimming and recumbent bike. Since I have no pool….I have the bike. It’s controllable, but not easy. Oh yeah, I have Thyroid Disease too. I guess I’m just faking it though, to drain more money from your bank account.

I really enjoyed the show, it was side-splitting. At one point I was laughing so hard I almost peed my pants. I think the show is far more relatable then people are giving it credit for, the characters are funny and sharp-witted, and I see nothing wrong with poking a little fun at yourself to make a room laugh. I have always been a fan of Mellissa McCarty and I am glad that she finally gets a lead role, she is great at carrying an audience. As for her family in the show, freaking hilarious!!!!

  • MiaS

Hoping this show is given time to find its legs-kinda of wobby last night.
    LOVE the actors though!

  • Jacob

I didn’t like the pilot, but that doesn’t mean I won’t tune in in six months and see how the show has progressed. I wrote off Cougar Town after not enjoying its pilot, but one night after Modern Family I stuck around and much to my delight, the show got much, much better, and now I’m hooked. Comedies take time to find their footing. (The Office, Parks and Rec, even 30 Rock – all struggled in their first few episodes). This one could win me over later, but it didn’t quite do it last night.

I read that the show relied heavily (no pun intended) on fat jokes, but I noticed the jokes I laughed at had nothing to do with weight, so they don’t need to rely on those to keep me entertained. I thought it was pretty good (love Melissa McCarthy, and watched because of her). Hated the sister character – she was awful and not funny at all. I normally love Swoozie Kurtz, but the jury is still out on her character. Will wait to see how the 2nd episode goes.

  • Jessica

I liked it. But we’ll see how it progresses. And EW the actor that plays Mike’s partner is Reno Wilson NOT Nyambi Nyambi. That gentlemen plays the waiter Samuel in the diner that Mike and his parnter Carl frequent.

  • Anita

I watched it, gave it a shot…but really, I don’t see it lasting. Yes, it had a few genuinely funny moments but I just didn’t feel any chemistry with the cast. For me Big Bang Theory was a hit right off the bat…this show I felt had too much self-deprecating humor in it which eventually became sad to watch.

As for her mom and her sister…I normally like Swoozie Kurtz, but hated her character as the mom, and the sister…I know some of you like that actress but that is the very same character she plays in absolutely everything I’ve ever seen her in, I’m tired of her. In fact…I’m sitting here now trying to remember ANYTHING specific about the show…the only thing that comes to mind is his broken finger and how fake that hand obviously was.

I don’t think it will be coming back.

    • Pauline

I think BBT had a weaker pilot ep. I watched it from day one and remember being unimpressed by the pilot. It really hit it’s stride in the second season and episodes with Laurie Metcalfe are particularly fabulous.

  • mcompton

I saw the pilot in Las Vegas this summer and I thought the same thing – liked the lead actors, loved their chemistry, thought the fat jokes were a little too much

  • e

I thought the show was funny. I laughed a lot. But I thought the classroom set was not accurate. No one has blackboards in their classrooms anymore and a teacher’s desk would never be in the front of the class like they had it.

    • Pauline

I’m a teacher and we have blackboards. Maybe in some kind of rich school disctrict where you can afford to replace hundreds of blackboards nobody has them but here in my district we are still using chalk.

  • yikes

    “Annonymous” ??

    REALLY?

  • Donna

I thought it was a great show. I enjoyed it

  • Angeleen

I love Melissa McCarthy too and that is why I tuned in. But her sister was hilarious in that scene at OA – “I love police officers! I’m not high.” and “Has it been a long time since I’ve talked?”

I also thought how he asked her out on a date was pretty cute as well.

I’m nervous but as the poster said about King of Queens, if they don’t overdo it with the fat jokes (HA! We get it, they’r fat!) and develope the supporting characters as well, it could be a great show.

  • Penny

I liked it. And T’m fat. And I’ve been in Overeater’s Anonymous. I thought it was amusing. Wasn’t she in that show with Christina Applegate, the one which got cancelled?
