ABC nabs 'True Lies' television adaptation

Yargh! What’s that? You think I’m angry? No, silly, that was just an Arnold-esque expression of joy! (Or, at least Conan O’Brien‘s Arnold-esque expression of joy.) For how could I not be pumped that the TV adaptation of True Lies — executive produced by none other than James Cameron — is headed to ABC? (The network confirmed the news — first reported by Deadline — with EW.)

This can only mean one thing: With Cameron at the wheel, we need to start picking up some 3-D televisions. Or not — if the TV series finds someone as in shape as 1994 Arnold Schwarzenegger for the plum role of spy/dad Harry Tasker, his veins will pretty much pop off the screen without the help of technology, right?

Either way, may we make a plea once again that Cameron, and ABC, bring back True Lies alum Eliza Dushku for the adaptation? Come on, we have Faith (heh) she’ll be perfect!

Who else is excited to see that this is actually happening?

Very cool. With the right lead and writers this could be a great show. Is Tom Arnold on board yet :-)

ABC is run by morons, they cancel Legend of the Seeker, an original, fun, creative show shot in beautiful New Zealand for this crap?

      • Nerwen Aldarion

All the originality, fun, creativity and beautiful sets can’t make up for BAD RATINGS!

      • Jinzo

Legend of the Seeker wasn’t a ABC show,it was a syndicated show. But I feel your pain….but answer this, would you like a scripted drama or the crap like “Jersey Skanky Shore”?

      • Monty

Ok dude. we put up with it in the spring when it got canned. we stayed with you in the summer when you worked through your ‘pain’. Now, in the fall, its time for you to move out of Mom’s basement and find something else to bitch about. I hear global warming is making a comeback…

      • Joey

Get over it Legend of the Seeker was canceled cause it sucked

      • PJM

Legend of the Seeker was a syndicated show. And obviously you never saw the movie if you don’t think a TV show executive produced by the guy who made the movie is an instant fail.

I agaree 100% — this could be fantastic with the right cast. And I definately want to see Tom Arnold back as the super partner to Harry. I hope this happens!!

True Lies was terrible. TV adaptations of films are always terrible. This is going to be terrible.

    • Phil

So true eyeball! That short lived flop M*A*S*H proves your point.

      • Joes

True lies was a very good Anrold-esque movie, but a TV series based off the concept is retarded. Cameron better not make it f#$@!’n 3D…

      • Brian

Buffy worked way better on TV than in a movie.

  • Brian

I really think they should get Dushku back to reprise her role and reverse the movie’s setup–she’s the spy, but her husband doesn’t know.

    • Redcatlady

Or it could be her fiance who’s clueless — until she ends up spotting a major terrorist while she and her guy are off on a weekend together. I’m all for Jamie Lee coming back as Helen — who’s now either been promoted or is her daughter’s handler — with Arnold making occasional appearances and Tom as backup the way he was in the movie.

  • Bren

Actually, I’m a little more interested to see how they are going to adapt/destroy Spooks (aka MI-5). I feel like this is probably going to be more like NBC’s Undercovers without the JJ factor.

  • Nerwen Aldarion

Hmmmm I’ll have to check this out (and I’m trying to figure out how different it will be from Undercovers) but JJ knows how to make some good TV

  • Solomon McBreezy

With JJ Abrams working on Undercovers, there is no way that it can be a bad show. So with James Cameron working on this True Lies show, this show has to be entertaining…

  • David

FYI: In the movie Eliza Dushku was
the daughter. Jamie Lee Curtis was
Arnold S.’s wife. Too bad Juno Skinner was killed off.

Sequel made more sense. Cameron didn’t want to do it because he didn’t think people would want to laugh at Al Qaeda. I would love to laugh at them. Gay Hitler is one of the funniest things ever put on film. We laughed at him we can laugh at Al Qaeda.

  • Melanie

I totally read that first word as Conan doing Arnold. Yes, I’m a dork.

  • Macaroni

Cannot generalize and say all tv adaptations of movies are bad. it depends on who does it. True Lies was a great movie. Hope they can do 1/2 as good on the TV show.

  • Brett

I just don’t see the premise of the movie sustaining a series. And Eliza Dushku hasn’t exactly proven that she’s a draw, either on TV or at the box office.

  • Chloe

This will work based on a good story, writing and most especially casting. I think they should hire no-namers. Thats how the best started out. E.g. Jennifer Garner as Sydney Bristow.

  • lorraine

If it’s done right then I will see it because that movie is awesome and I’ve watched it far too many times.

  • Get Real

If done right, they could do fairly well. I give it a 50% chance of making it past the first 5 episodes, if even that.
And too all of you who do not understand why ABC cancels shows or why their shows get bad ratings…
ABC does awful job marketing for anything more than a few new shows each season. This year, there is a good deal of ads for My Generation, but I really do not see much of anything else from them. ABC cancels shows for bad ratings; the shows get bad ratings because they do not know how to place shows and market them correctly or enough. They sabotage their shows, or at least it seems that way. Look back at what they did to Pushing Daisies and Dirty Sexy Money. Both shows had very good ratings in their first season and were rushed off the air in Dec. 2008, due to the writers’ strike. Instead of having them come back in the spring, ABC kept them off the air for 9 whole months and then did not even announce the returns.

  • The Brit

The planned True Lies television series could actually be interesting if done right. It would be good if each season of the series is based on current affairs and the Omega Sector battles a real world threat such as Al-Qaeda, the Taliban, Iranian extremists, North Korean extremists, Somali pirates, Colonel Muammar Gaddafi’s forces, etc.

They should include an ensemble cast, reveal the inner workings of the Omega Sector, explore themes from the film such as family, trust and betrayal and they can incorporate some of the memorable elements from the movie with dancing the Argentinean tango to Por una Cabeza, chasing villains by horse through a city, traveling to different countries for missions, a Harrier jet attacking an office building, a dropped MAC-10 sub-machine gun falling down a flight of stairs where it fires continuously all by itself killing several henchmen, the female lead performing an erotic dance in lingerie, etc.
