'Tangled': Rapunzel takes center stage in second trailer

When Disney released its first trailer for Tangled a couple of months ago, it left some scratching their heads. Was this winkingly modern updating of the classic Brothers Grimm fairytale — with Mandy Moore and Zachary Levi providing the voices — sill about the girl with really long hair? Or was it now all about the dashing young dude who saves her from the castle tower? In an attempt to appeal to more than just the girls in the audience, it seemed as if Disney had written Rapunzel out of her own story, or at least out of the trailer, making instead a princess movie for boys. Was that why the studio had previously changed the title from Rapunzel to Tangled?

But now, with today’s just-released second trailer, the controversy should be put to rest: It’s Rapunzel’s story after all. She’s all over this new footage, with the male character, a dashing but bumbling outlaw named Flynn, playing second fiddle as narrator. They’ve also bumped up the horse’s part from barely-in-the first-trailer to omnipresent sidekick in the second. Personally, we’re relieved to see the old girl getting her due. A Rapunzel movie without Rapunzel would have us pulling our hair out. But what do you think, PopWatchers? Does the second trailer make you want to see this movie?

Hey, PopWatch, can you or someone at EW look into why this isn’t being advertised as a musical? The seem to be trying awfully hard to hide that fact. Considering the song music is by Alan Menken, whose done some Disney classics, I’m surprised. Are they that scared that they messed up the marketing of The Princess and the Frog?

      Great points.

To me, the fact that they seem to be trying to hide that it’s a musical is a much bigger deal than whether this is marketed to boys or girls or whatever. (I loved this stuff in the 90’s and can still quote “Little Mermaid” at the drop of a hat.) If it’s great (and it has great music) I’m there, despite the fact that I’m much older and may have to borrow someone else’s kid as a beard.

Hey after seeing the teaser trailer I knew I wanted to see it just for Zachary Levi. I was lucky enough to meet him a Comic Con and I told him I was looking forward to seeing it. he laughed and yelled ‘Thank you’. I said ‘Well look at it this way. I love Chuck and its fantastic, but you’re the voice in a Disney film now. That’s an honest to God high point’. ‘Oh absolutely man’, he told me. ‘I mean cause one day Tangled might get mentioned in the same breath as the films you and I grew up on (I’m only a few years younger than him) and it was a blast to do. I hope you enjoy it!’

This trailer is eons better than the first one.

I like it but want to see/hear Donna Murphy’s witch!!!

I wanted to see it after the first trailer. In fact, I more or less just wanted to see it as soon as I heard Zachary Levi was in it. I can’t wait to see it!!!

    • Mr. Holloway

I like Levi, and want to support his movie career…thankfully, this looks like it’s MILES more palatable than “Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakuel”

Even David Cross couldn’t get me to see THAT. My friend had to take her five year old brother to it and told me it made her want to rip her face off.

      • Mr. Holloway

I don’t remember, but I think “It made me want to rip my face off” was one of the blurbs on the DVD.

      • tracy bluth

That was probably the best review it got.

SO EXCITED! Loved the first trailer, the 2nd makes me want to see it even more!

    • Jackie

Couldn’t have put it better myself! :)

      This!

I was going to watch it after the firs trailer just because it is a Disney movie and I love Disney movies, but now after the second trailer I really want to watch it because it looks funny!! And Zachary Levi is in it!!
“Are you guarding this?” haha!! that is what I love about Disney movies, it is kind of predictable and meant for kids, but I am almost 21 and still laughing at it!!!

I would like to hear more about whether this is a musical. I love Mandy Moore’s voice. I bought her latest CD last year and haven’t stopped playing it. Can’t say that about any other music I’ve bought.

    • LOL

yep Alan Menken wrote the songs (he did the music for Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin etc.) I don’t know why the music isnt in the trailer..perhaps it is not complete

      • Tony

The music will probably be on the third trailer. They seem to be revealing one bit of the film at a time.

  • Valley Girl

My daughter will be four by the time this is released and you better believe we will see it, lol.

I totally disagree with Benjamin, because this trailer is still SO much about Flynn. However it’s a great trailer. I just don’t see why he raved about it putting Rapunzel front and center when it so obviously doesn’t.

Agreed that I want to see the witch and I want to hear the songs. Psyched for this film. I loved The Princess and the Frog

  • Nerwen Aldarion

I can’t wait to see this film!!! While I agree I think they still could have shown MORE Repunzel in this trailer, it was a lot more about her this time around. I can’t wait to see this film and this was BEFORE I became a Chuck fan over the summer, Now I’m counting the days!

  • jrwork

I’ve wanted to see it since the first trailer.

  • Laura W

It looks cool but I want to hear the music I mean I still got beauty and the beast, the Lion King and the Princess and the frog on my ipod I just hope the music good because disney musicals tend to have much loved and memorable songs even if they’re from classics or not!

  • Lori Y

Why the heck was there a promo for Devil, of all movies, before this trailer started??

  • Michelle

I haven’t been this excited for a Disney movie in a long time.
