'America's Got Talent': Who deserves to win?

To quote America’s Got Talent‘s eloquent host Nick Cannon, “It’s the finals man!” Yes, it’s come to this, PopWatchers. Four acts are left in the running, each hoping for a career on the Vegas strip and beyond. Piers did his best Simon Cowell impression, crushing the dreams of Prince Poppycock (who he claimed he”blew it”) and Fighting Gravity, while praising Jackie Evancho as the greatest thing since DVR. But the Prince didn’t seem discouraged. In a post-show interview with People, he described the dreaded “X” he received from Piers as simply a means to create tension, calling the judge a “big ninny.” Point Poppycock?

Prince Poppycock’s performance was very straightforward, so I have to agree with Piers’ assessment that it was less fun than his previous performances. Will America still embrace a serious Poppycock? And If you take away his elaborate costumes and makeup, is he as good of a singer as Jackie Evancho?

Howie had nothing but love for Mississippi’s own Michael Grimm, who gets the award for Cutest Grandparents. Can someone just give him a record deal and call it a day? Sure, winning the competition will help, but methinks the show has given him enough exposure to go far in the music world. Ozzy Osbourne also has money on him to win, so does this mean the Prince of Darkness will make an appearance during the results show tonight? (We can only hope). We also got a nice group performance from previously eliminated contestants (Harmonica Pierre!), which could be a preview of what’s in store for the upcoming AGT live tour. Check out the rest of the final performances from Michael, Jackie Evancho, and Fighting Gravity below.

I’m hoping that the Virginia Tech boys win it all because they’ve been the most unusual act all season. But since America is voting, my money is on Poppycock or Little Jackie, simply because of the ferocity of their fans. Does anyone feel like Fighting Gravity isn’t getting the respect they deserve? Are any of these acts over-hyped? Does Jackie Evancho need to win AGT to become a star? Are you surprised by what Prince Poppycock looks like under all that makeup? Am I a bad person for thinking opera is just not all that interesting? Who are YOU voting for?

I think Jackie is over-hyped. Yes she can sing opera, but do I really want to pay $ to watch a ten yr old sing songs I can’t understand? No. Do I want to watch a guy strumming a guitar? No. Do I want to watch Poppycock for longer than he’s allowed on this show? No. Please let it be Fighting Gravity. They’re the most unusual & would fit more in Vegas than anyone else.

And if Jackie isn’t ten I apologize for getting that wrong.

    • Elaine

I agree with you! Jackie is very talented, but NOT really an act I’d go to Vegas to see. Poppycock and Michael G are also good at what they do but I’m not sure I’d pay to see them either. Fighting Gravity should win, they are unique and have done something bigger and better each time!

    • TaMara

Not only that, do we want to watch her sing songs she can’t understand. It’s fine to have a great voice, but it takes some life experience to add needed depth to songs like this.

    • @ashley

yeah, ash-brooke, why would you want to listen to songs you don’t understand, I mean, you wouldn’t want to grow or expand your horizons any — why start now?

      • Bri

I love Jackie, I think she’s amazing. Would I pay to see her on a nice, elegent, cultured evening out? Yes. Would a night out like that when I was in Vegas? No.
        Fighting Gravity all the way.

      • fiveagainstone

Just because one is not into opera does not mean that they’re not looking to expand their horizons. You’re either into opera or not. The same way you’re into country or not. I’m not into opera either, but that does not mean my taste in music is narrow, it’s just not my cup of tea. With that said, Grimm will be 4th place, Jackie will be 3rd, Poppycock 2nd, and Fighting Gravity to win it all (and deservedly so).

      • @ @ Ashley

She is really not that good an opera singer but that aside DO YOU LISTEN TO OPERA!!!! Poppycock IC Vegas!

      • @FiveagainstOne

It has nothing to do with liking opera idiot – it has to do with not wanting to hear languages you don’t understand – typical american

      • to @@Ashley

what the H*;ll do you know about opera? how does your poppycock prediction work out? not very well – last place. why? because his singing SUCKED on tues. and he showed that he is NOT a very good opera singer – loser

    • Chris

Completely agree. I wouldn’t want to pay money to listen to anyone much less a little girl sing opera music. Can’t see how me listening to that would expand my horizons either. Way over-hyped.

      • to chris

clueless – read and think first, before responding

    • sandra

Besides Jackie is far too young to be going to perform in Vegas. She is talented and could expect a career, but way to young. Do people that actually listen to opera think she is as talented as most of us think? People go to study opera for years before making it.
Little girls always seem to ruin their lives with early success.
Poopyckock could play Vegas, but a whole show…. don’t think so. Would Micheal make it on American Idol…probably not. I think fighting gravity is the right choice…they are creative, would fit in Las Vegas, have a basic premise that could be highly expanded on in a Vegas setting.

      • noam

i am not an opera expert, but i have gone to my share…i think it’s pretty obvious jackie doesn’t really know/understand what she’s singing. it’s pretty, but there isn’t a whole lot of emotion behind it. i think she’s just being coached on pronunciation, the way beyonce sang in french at the oscars a few years ago, or high school choirs do gregorian chants…anyways, who goes to vegas to watch a little girl sing? she’s impressive, but doesn’t deserve the prize this show offers.

      • to noam

what kind of emotion would you expect from a 10 yr. old?? get a grip

    • Fire Morgan!!

Well this first batch of comments explains why an Mediocre Singer who wouldn’t get past top 8 on American Idol won.. You are all cultural ignoramuses.
Both Prince Popycock and Jackie were brilliant. And if some solid singing mixed in with high camp confuses you.. please tell me you don’t ever drive on the freeway.
Tonight was a Grimm letdown after a pretty interesting season. Really no one will remember Michaela WHO? in a week.. the other three acts we will remember. Like AI voting seems to be dominated by hormone poisoned women.. On of the worst finishes ever for AGT.

      • Bjork

Poppy sucked on Tues. – that’s why he lost. Whenever he starts to think he’s a real opera singer he should go back and play Tuesday’s show over again.

      • Anna

How do you know what other people will remember? Speak for yourself.I for one will remember, and all the others voters will also.M.G.won because he was the BEST.

  • Stephanie T.

Grimm can get a recording contract without a doubt, as can Jackie Evancho. And Sharon is right that Fighting Gravity could still be in Vegas even of they lose. I’d say Poppycock except what Piers was trying to point out (rudely) was that, Andrew Quale (Poppycock) went from classical, to camp, to classical again. Which is he? He could do both in a show but the viewer could get confused and the camp seems more fun. My bet is on Fighting Gravity with Poppycock coming in second or third.

    • blondiesez

Jackie E already HAS a recording contract. I think she’s a ringer who will last about as long as Charlotte Church, if she’s lucky.

      • David

Gee, Charlotte Church has done incredibly well. Host of her own TV show in Brittan, new album coming out in Nov., and by some accounts is worth more than $30 million, so if Jackie could follow that would be pretty good! And just to clarify, Jackie does not have a recording contract, don’t know where you hear that.

      • role model?

Charlotte Church was also chain smoking at 16, is a single mother (never married) of two kids, and caused a TON of controversy with her appearances on talk shows and such.
I really hope Jackie does not follow in her footsteps!

    • @stephanie

FG is going down. They were ultra boring, sloppy, out of synch…how long can anyone stand to watch guys being turned sideways, then the other side — gawd…Where was the good vs. evil?? Didn’t get that at all. Some doors were red and the other were white/blue. Is that it? What’s with those stupid florescent balls – what are those supposed to be? Stupid and pointless – Hope they lose.

      • Joe

Wow, Look who is out of touch? Same person who responded to Ashley, I wager too. Your fanaticism for Jackie doesn’t make you more cultured, especially since the good vs. evil symbolism of the Fighting Gravity sketch was lost on you – if you can’t even pick that up, you have no grounds for picking on anyone else.

Go hate elsewhere – you probably would call Blue Man Group a bunch of weirdos…

      • Bob from Ft Lauderdale

I agree, Stephanie. FG is a one note act. It gets old fast.
I also like Jackie and Michael. Poppycock is just that.

      • betsy

I think saying they were pointless and stupid is too strong; but they were boring and sloppy. I got bored during this one show (and the last one, with the space ship) so there’s no way I’d want to watch a whole show of it.

      • Marci

Thank you, Joe! I am so sick of this poster who only uses the @ sign to hide behind while he spues all kinds of hate. He has been stalking this board for weeks and criticizing anyone who does not agree with him/(her?) and does not even have the decency to post a name. Couldn’t get much more immature than that…maybe this person is Jackie’s age?

      • to Joe

no, I’d rather stay here and hate you, you’re so hateable – symbolism? there was symbolism? what do the glowing balls symbolize?

      • to Joe

Well they came in 3rd I told you they were going down.

      • Anna

        AMEN,u are so right.

    • BatmansKiss

Prince P is actually John Quayle, not Andrew, as the original comment posits.

  • ST

I know I’m going to get hated on but I did think Prince P. blew it last night. I kept expecting him to take it up a notch and put his own spin on it but he didn’t and it kind of disappointed. He wasn’t horrible by any means but my bet is on Jackie though I really want Michael Grimm to win. Here’s to hoping that he at least gets a record deal out of this. As for Fighting Gravity, I thought last night was one of their more interesting acts but they did make an obvious blunder towards the end when you could clearly see one of the guys in the background. Not sure if that’s enough to kill their dreams or not but I bet they’ll still get a Vegas act no matter what. Same for Prince P. He just suits that.

    • David

I read this am that they have been signed to a show in Vegas.

    • Bjork

you’re right – he was gawd awful on Tues. – I was a bit surprised he saved the worst for last

  • Stormy

Gotta go with Michael Grimm, an actual talent. Poppycock [Weird Al lookalike] is just a so so singer and the rest is as his name states, Poppycock. Jackie will be a second lead type opera singer as most mezzo or contralto parts are not the lead.

    • Stephanie T.

OMG, you are right! I was trying to figure out who he reminded me of without the makeup. A gay Weird Al.

      • blondiesez

ummm…..no. The guy’s face is rounder, his chin’s pointier, his hair is straight. AND he doesn’t play accordion. :-)

      • Stephanie T.

Yeah blondie, but the smile is a bit similar without the makeup.

    • @stormy

you obviously know nothing about voice types – why are you naming Jackie a mezzo or contralto when she’s only 10 – if you know nothing, there’s no point advertising your ignorance

      • Stormy

It is not an ignorant observation. Jackie’s voice is already low, and is only going to get lower as her vocal chords mature. No one starts as a mezzo and grows into being a coloratura.

      • @stormy aka clueless

        go away – you know nothing – she’s 10!!!!!!!!!!!!Ten!!!!!!!!

      • @ the stupid @ person

We get it you love Jackie. Now you go away. Yes she’s 10, but Stormy’s point is still 100% correct. You screaming she’s 10 doesn’t change that. Fundamentally, the girl has an amazing voice (which I am afraid she will ruin with the way she sings at such a young age), but she has zero emotional resonance. It’s just recitation, no interpretation whatsoever. She is ten so I don’t expect a sophisticated, nuanced performance, but stop acting like she’s ready to be an opera singer now. She’s not and no, a person who doesn’t want to a watch a ten year old sing emotionless opera (even if she can hit all the notes) is not shallow or limited. I love opera and I wouldn’t want to watch a ten year old sing emotionless music she doesn’t understand yet. For my money I’d go for Flying Gravity, they put on the best show.

      • @ the stupid @ person

Excuse me, I meant “Fighting Gravity” not “Flying Gravity.” Typo there. Either way my point still stands that you should stop hating on random people, hiding behind your @ symbol and realize they have points. And yes she’s ten, but using exclamation points does not make your arguments any less ignorant.

      • to Stormy and the stupid person

You two are total R*tards. You tell me to stop acting like she’s ready to be an opera singer now, when I expressly told you to stop labelling her as mezzo or contralto when she’s only 10 – You two are deranged – are you twins?

      • to Stormy and Stupid

I’m acting like Jackie’s ready to be an opera singer now? I don’t think so – You are your r*t*rded twin are the ones making pronouncements about a 10-yr. old’s voice. You just don’t get it, do you.

    • RickyDoLuv24

Michael Grimm is the only act I’d go to see in Vegas. Fighting Gravity is compared to Blue Man, but Blue Man interacts with the audience, not possible with fighting gravity. Also Cirque, but I get bored with Cirque anyway. Jackie’s darn cute, but I’d never pay money in Vegas to see her. And Poppycock … he’s waaaaay over-hyped. Some say he’s the next Liberace, once a fine Vegas act. But Vegas has ‘grown up’ a lot since Li, and Poppycock is just poopycock as far as I’m concerned. My wife and I voted for Michael as many times as we could … I hope it puts him over the top (yah, I know I’m just dreaming, but I can still hope.)

  • Kate

The only act that seems to need the win to be famous is Michael Grimm. I’m sure Prince Poppycock will have his own act, Fighting Gravity is this decade’s Blue Man Group & is destined to have their own Las Vegas & NYC shows (and sold out performances worldwide), & Jackie Evancho will probably release her debut album within a year. Michael Grimm just doesn’t seem like a star to me. He’s the only one of the four I haven’t personally voted for. The other thee really have that star quality.

    • Jethro

This is the problem, “needs the win to be famous” is not the reason to win the show. As in all these talent shows, just being on it is the audition of a lifetime. He may sing great and sound so soulful, but the I am sick of the sad stories these entertainers are told to say to us.

    • Mr. Holloway

(I KNOW I’m going to regret bringing this up but) Your point about a contestant “needing to win” because he may not have super-apparent star quality reminds of…Lee DeWyze.

      • rockinanny

Boo Yah! I couldn’t agree more!!

      • xxxxxxxxx

I can understand you saying that but there is one difference…sorry to say but Michael Grimm has a lot more talent than Lee DeWyze.

      • Marci

        @xxxxxxxxx – you are right!

      • Stephanie T.

Except Dewyze kind of copied his style from the 90′s band Slowdive.

    • argem

Jackie Evancho already has an album out on iTunes since last month. Not interesting though. I wasn’t impressed enough by what I heard.

    • ruta

according to today’s USA TODAY, Jackie Evancho already has a CD out since last November

  • Jethro

Granted PP was a disappointment last night, however, overall in previous appearances was the best and can still put on the best show for Vegas. With costumes, props, etc, he is the best person for the job.

How can Vegas build a show around singers, Michael & Jackie, other than backup singers or choirs? Kind of boring to me. The gravity guys are great, but like the dance crew with the white face that actually won another dance talent show, can still headline in Vegas without an actual AGT win!

PP will draw in all ages, too bad he didn’t do a GaGa routine last night, imagine him doing “Bad Romance” PP’s style!!??

    • Laura

yeah I totally agree with you. PP should have won last night not Micheal Grim. Or at least come in 2nd I have no Idea how the audience could have put MG before PP. He has no Vegas Act what so ever nice voice I will give him that but he never put in the countless hours that PP put in to make a show. The audience only voted on voices they never voted on complete acts.

      • blork

no, PP could not have won with that terrible performance on Tues. – saved the best for last? hardly

      • Anna

The right person won, PP was nothing but a clown he should be in a circus.

  • Rock Golf

While on principal I’d like to see a non-singer win, Fighting Gravity are getting pretty dull. Could anyone make head or tail of their “good vs evil” scenario?

In the end, it doesn’t really matter who wins. Poppycock will become a minor cult act, Grimm will release an album of Michael Bolton covers and never be heard of again, Fighting Gravity will go back to Virginia Tech and little Jackie will sell millions of CDs but not get a smidgen of radio airplay.

Coming second didn’t do Susan Boyle’s career any harm, nor will it have the slightest impact on Evancho having a #1 album by this Christmas.

    • MW

Absolutly, right on comment. Rock Golf is very smart. Very business minded, you sound like you are in the business and I find your thoughts very constructive. There are no winners, think about it.

      • @MW

thank you MW aka Rock Golf

    • @rock

yeah, as I said earlier, I didn’t get the good vs. bad except some doors were red and some were white and they kept coming in and going out and I had no clue what was going on – all I knew was I was bored stiff

    • Margie

Actually, a Christmas album is a great idea for her. I’d buy it, if not any other type of opera album.

    • Anna

He will be known around the world as a great artist,so just shup up.

  • ruta

Jackie Evancho is ANNOYING and, again last night, seemed to be lip-synching part of her ‘song’. Someone, please stop hyping this freak show of an act and stop exploiting this poor little child! The parent should be ashamed, but remember—you reap what you sow.
FIGHTING GRAVITY, even tho’ they did have a tiny glitch last night, should WIN! If this is truly about discovering talent that is still an ‘amateur’ act, FIGHTING GRAVITY deserve it. The opera girl is already signed to sing at Carnegie Hall and Michael Grimm has already opened for Heart, so please…stop shoving this fake show down our throats and do what’s right…give the WIN TO FIGHTING GRAVITY!

    • Reena

I couldnt agree with you more! I know she is 10 but I find her to be very annoying also I felt she was lip-synching too maybe its different looking live but every performance of hers I really feel like a recording is going off espicially cause she is always looking towrds the side at some points like she is looking at a producer or something to make sure she is on cue…I am all for Fighting Gravity they are original, talented and I can see them having plennty of shows were its always something different not just singing opera music for 2 hours!

    • Tracy Heffner

      WHAT????

    • Terri

Hearing that voice out of a 10 year old is creepy. Beautiful voice that I hope she will grow into in 20 years. There should be an age limit on AGT like Idol.

      • Joe

There’s still the possibility puberty could ruin that voice of hers.

      • @joe

        damned puberty…

    • AnnR

I agree. I keep looking at her facial and throat movements and she does not seem to be actually singing … Just lip syncing. She is a bit creepy to me. Too young for this kind of show and especially Vegas. People would have to be drunk to go to her “show”.

      • @annR

I have to be drunk to keep reading the drivel that keeps oozing out of your alleged mind.

      • Anna

@annR, u are so right, you have a very good mind.

    • @Ruda

Reap what you sow? Get off your high horse, honey. If boring everyone to tears, being out of synch, making mistakes, being one-trick ponies = a tiny glitch, then you’re deranged and should be locked up where you can’t inflict your lame thoughts on others.

      • ruta

who is this person who keeps ranting and making no sense?

      • @ruta

        Mrs. Evancho

  • glenn

Piers Morgan is a pig, buzzing Prince Poppycock when there was ten seconds left to his performance. What a tool, turning the spotlight on himself. I hope it backfired and Prince Poppycock wins tonight!

    • AnnR

I second your motion. Is there someway we can get rid of Piers for good?

      • @annR

then can we get rid of you for good? too creepy

    • Myla

I agree with you about Piers Morgan buzzing PP. Sharon called it. He was being selfish. It’s the finals. Let the finalists just do their act and then critique them when they’re done. So disrespectful.

      • AnnR

gree. Lets pack his bags and send him home – those X’s should be turned off in these finals.

    • georgialei

Not to be paranoid, but I think that Piers deliberately tried to sabatoge the Prince. Piers has been a big supporter of Jackie E and I could definitly see him doing something like that. AGT really needs to decide what they are looking for. Are they looking for a Vegas-style act (Poppycock and Fighting Gravity) or are they looking for acts with the “aww” factor like Jackie and Grimm? The only winner that has continued in Vegas is the ventriloquist. Everyone else has had very minor careers.

      • Laura

I love what you said about them looking for a vegas act or just a aww factor you were right on. I was sooooo disapointed last night I might not even watch the show anymore. enlesss they get rid of piers.

  • jury’s out

My money’s on Fighting Gravity. Up until now, Prince P was my favorite, but I have to agree with Pierce. He waits until the finale to get serious and boring. Up until now he was like Mr. Humphries on Are You Being Served- camp Nirvana. Self sabotage maybe? Michael Grimm is certainly talented, but I don’t think he deserves to win. That leaves Jackie, with her unearthly voice. I don’t see a kid playing Vegas, especially with an act like that. Then again, one of the previous winners sang opera. If you just go by talent, she certainly deserves to win as well as Poppycock or Fighting Gravity. There’s just a smugness about her that I find offputting.

    • word up

No kid playing Vegas? Don’t forget Wayne Newton. He was young when he debuted there. Jackie is a phenmenon, but won’t have any sustainability in Vegas. I’ll give you that. But she could win the show. It’s not just talent agents that vote, remember. You and I get a say in this, as well.

      • Marci

The world was a different place when Wayne Newton was a child.

      • KRibbons

The world was still recovering from Noah’s flood

  • RCB

    I miss Future Funk!

    • Jethro

      Who was that group?

      • Stephanie T.

The two little kids, one who gave Piers a thumbs down.

    • sara

oh please, those 2 obnoxious brats? The only thing worse than their dancing was their attitudes.

      • Stephanie T.

I have to agree that thier attitudes stank. I cannot believe that their parents encouraged that much disrespect. If I were Piers I would have called them out on that.

      • frostysnowman

Agreed! I am very happy they didn’t make it into the top 10. I don’t think there should be any kid acts allowed in this competition.

    • MW

Omg, I agree they were fun to watch but, this is a dangerous business for children. They’re cute cuz they’re supposed to be, but when they get older they aren’t as cute. Thanks for letting me comment.

    • @FFunk Lovers

Boo Hoo. They’re gone – Get over it or re-watch the shows you taped.

  • Jack M

Michael will probably win. Jackie is too young, Prince P is too fringe for middle American, and Fighting Gravity are also too young. America wants bland entertainment, not anything cutting edge.

  • Indy61

I voted Prince Poppy.. He is a show I loved the breath of fresh air watching him.. I voted for him.. Fighting gravity was wonderful to begin with but it seemed to get dull towards the end..The little girl needs to get to grow up and be a little girl before working the rest of her life and missing out.

    • huh

“Breath of fresh air??” Last night was more like the STENCH of Fluffy C*ck going up in Flames.

  • kevcogator

I am part of the Ozzy $100 bet. He has Grimm, I have Jackie, Barney Frank has Poppycock and Carrot Top has Fighting Gravity.

  • blondiesez

Yeah, PP shoulda been a little more, um, festive. But even standing still he’s WAY more entertaining/interesting than She Who Will Blow A Vocal Cord Before She’s Old Enough To Drink Legally or Record Her Second Album, Whichever Comes First.

Speaking of which, am I the only person who heard her go a little wonky on her lower notes and was otherwise underwhelmed with the lack of a big finish? Yeah, she’s good, but who wants to pay money to see THAT in Vegas for a whole hour?

I think Fighting Gravity got a bum rap from Piers last night. Unlike the other three, these guys are putting together completely new routines every freakin’ week and still managing to pull off almost complete flawlessness.

If FG or PP doesn’t win tonight, I’ll be mega-bummed. Not surprised, but mega-bummed.

    • Big Dave

Of course you’re not the only one who heard her go wonky on her lower notes. Her voice is immature, and she’s at real risk of damaging it before she’s an adult.

      • Carol

What ever happened to last years winner?

      • blondiesez

Good question. Who WAS last year’s winner?

      • Stephanie T.

Last years winner was an off key country/western singer who did a bad impersonation of Keith Carradine in the movie Nashville. No one has heard from him since.

      • Myla

Barbara Padilla, the opera singer, should have won. She sang opera beautifully.

      • @mylar

get over it, that was last year already – she lost!

    • allie

no you aren’t alone – she was FAR from perfect last night. The overpimping by Pier’s was ridiculous. She is an exceptionally talented 10 year old but last night was her weakest performance by a mile. My favorite is Fighting Gravity but they have looked a bit amaturish the last two times. I still think with lots of $$ & professional choreography and set designers they could be amazing. Grimm was good – he has a great voice but he bores me a little. Poppycock was a little boring last night as well – I kept waiting for him to do something BIG – but it was a solid performance. Just an odd choice for the finale – Piers was right, he might have blown it.

    • mccliza

Yes, she was wonky in her lower register and her breath control was weak. But that’s why a ten-year-old should NOT be straining her instrument like this. It’s really foolish on the part of whomever is coaching…er..promoting her.
