Image Credit: Jim Watson-pool/Getty Images John Adams, the first vice president, famously called it “the most insignificant office that ever the invention of man contrived or his imagination conceived.” But programmers at ABC know better. Variety is reporting today that the network is planning a one-hour dramedy about a fictional v.p. and his female chief of staff — sort of like NBC’s West Wing, only centering on far less powerful political characters. The untitled series, according to Variety, “focuses on the underdog nature of the veep’s team — call it the political equivalent of Glee.”
I don’t know. I love cheesy political TV dramas more than anyone. But one about a vice president? Really? The Under Secretary for Management has a more interesting job. Aside from attending state funerals, making embarrassing gaffes at fundraisers, and casting tie-breaking votes in the Senate, there’s not much to it. But maybe I’m wrong, PopWatchers. Would you tune in to watch a show about a fictional veep and his staff? Or is Joe Biden entertaining enough for you.

Maybe it’s about a puppetmaster-type VP.
I’d give it a shot depending on names attached. Robert Guilaume (sp?) could star giving a wink to his “Benson” days.
If there was an episode about the VP shooting his friends while they went hunting, it might be interesting.
Sounds good but remember this is coming from a network that had a series about the first woman President. Remember Commander In Chief. Good show but it only lasted a season.
Kind of sounds like SPIN CITY…
Whoever is in charge of development at ABC needs to get fired. Unbelievable.
The show should TOTALLY be about Bingo Bob Russell!! Just because Gary Cole is amazing and would make it bareable to watch
24 made the Vice Presidency seem so much more important than it is.
I’ll watch it.
Gary Cole would be great – the guy can do anything – but his WW stint probably rules him out.
Could be interesting depending on which way they go – D (older actor to play against younger dynamic Pres.) or R (more conservative type to appeal to the base).
It’s going to depend on who writes it – but I’d love to see someone like Stephen Root, William H. Macy or Richard Jenkins.
I, for one, would love to see John Mahoney on TV again. If he’s well enough to take on TV full time again.
Will this VP drop F Bombs?
Bleep my Vice President says
I feel like we’re glossing over the term, “the political equivalent of ‘Glee’” (Um, wha?!)
I actually think it’s an interesting idea (and, judging from the comments, it can go in a bunch of different ways), especially if they get someone good to write it.
As with anything it depends on casting and the writing. Michael Emmerson or Terry O’Quinn would be great in a dramedy.
You know, in a way, Ben ended up being Vice President of the Island. (Ok, I’ll stop!)
