'Dexter': New season 5 photos featuring Julia Stiles. Excited yet?

Julia-Stiles-in-DexterImage Credit: ShowtimeIt’s less than two weeks before the return of Dexter. I’m not sure whether I’m terribly excited or completely terrified, because it won’t be easy for Showtime’s bloody good drama to top its fourth season. But after seeing the first photos of Julia Stiles as [SPOILER ALERT] a “psychologically and physically damaged” woman named Lumen, I’m going to go with excited. [Note: In addition to the new-to-me pic to your left, NY Post has two others.]

And because I minored in overanalyzation in college, I’m filled with questions, thanks to these new sneak peeks (which are presumably from the third or fourth episode, when her character is rumored to first appear). Things to note in this photo: Why are her hands cut up? Where is she fleeing to and what’s she running from? And, most importantly, what secret/evil/sociopathic thoughts are hiding behind her too-innocent facial expression?

My wheels are turning, PopWatchers. For now, theorize with me. Do you think Stiles’ character will be good, bad, or somewhere in between?

New season of Dexter starts Sept. 26.

I think this season is going to be dark as hell. I think we’re going to see Dexter in a new light and I am very excited to see Julia Stiles attached. I think she’s a great underrated actress.

    • jethrine

Don’t like Stiles and don’t know why anyone would get “excited” about her.

      • Edwin

OMG! I would kill for this flavor (no pun indtened). Please let this be real. I just checked the B&J website & didn’t see it, but maybe it will be there soon!!!! I <3 Dexter Morgan!

  • Bill

I love Julia Stiles and the writing on this show is top-notch. Looks awesome to me!

  • Rion

It’s hard to be excited now that Rita’s dead. She was my favorite character, a little light of normalcy.

  • Mr. Holloway

Just got into and finished catching up on this show a little more than two weeks ago, and I can’t wait, even though they DO have a major challenge this season.

Not only do they have to follow up the excellent fourth season, but as Rion pointed out (whether you liked her or not) Rita represented something important on this show.

I’m also a little worried that Quinn is going to continue to become Doakes 2.0.

    • Krystal

I totally agree. I think he may be WORSE than Doakes! But Quin and Deb will totally hook up this season. Calling it now.

  • JMaG

I like her, could be a good role for her. Can’t wait for the new season! Week from Sunday!

  • lorraine

I think maybe we wont know what she is but maybe she’s running from a boyfriend or husband that could be mean or abusive to her. Dexter and her form a bond that could be good for both of them.

  • Marta

Whether its her or not, I hope they cast someone in some kind of love interest role for Dexter. I think Dexter in a romantic relationship gives the character such a interesting complex (in addition to everything else he has going on!)

    • marta, get a grip

his wife was just murdered – maybe…just maybe ROMANCE is not the first thing on his mind!!! duh

    • Yasin

Dexter is awfully hmdsnoae. I hope you figure out a way to break him of his bad habit.Maybe you could do a few trial runs with the kong to see how he does. Pretend to leave and just hide outside somewhere to see what happens.

  • Merideth

Cannot wait!! I’m sure it will be brilliant although I agree it will be hard to top the amazing season 4. So happy MCH is back and healthy, and looking forward to seeing what Julia Stiles will bring to the best show on television.

  • DavidJ

Personally I was glad to see Rita go, as their relationship was making Dexter a little too soft and domesticated for my liking. Now hopefully we can see a return to the darker, edgier Dexter of the first season.

    • Rion

Wow, I can’t believe there is anyone who doesn’t like Rita.

      • jethrine

the writing for her in Seasons 3 and 4 were terrible – but I was hoping Dexter would do the noble thing and leave them FOR their own protection

      • Victoria

on one side {insert opponent here} and on the other conerr wearing dark trunks, the mighty dexter. I don’t remember the line by heart but I remember when checking the second season with the books that line was identical, they also make Debra date an FBI agent AND the skinner reminds a bit of dr danko with the torture stuff. Mr. mitchell is mr.weiss.

    • sen

@David- Agree 100%.. dexter as family man drove me nuts. I want to see an edgier, darker side of dexter. Maybe Paul’s parents will take the kids? I can only hope…

    • to David

that’s fine to write her out of the show but the way it was done was JUST TERRIBLE – many I know won’t watch anymore because of that

  • MCS

I was excited for season 5 December last year! I’m almost exploding I’m that excited

  • Zo

Man, it’s pointless to speculate on the surprises that await us this season! I just know that I CAN’T WAIT!

Anyone know though why exec producer Clyde left? When I read in EW that he wasn’t returning, I got a little nervous. Sometimes those changes don’t go so well…
Also missing the directing talents of Michael Cuesta from Season 1.

    • Praveen

Hey, i just started watncihg Dexter this season so there’s a lot I don’t know, but I love your recaps so far. Question: you write that his father Harry always told him what to do morally. How do they show that? In flashbacks/voice overs, or do they actually show Dexter as a little kid?I too love the scene with Brother Sam on Dexter’s balcony 2 friends chillin & havin a beer. I sure hope Sam isn’t dead. And what’s up with that dog? What kind of lame watch dog is that???VA:F [1.9.11_1134]please wait…VA:F [1.9.11_1134](from 0 votes)

my dad insists that i look like julia stiles. seeing these most recent photos, the truth to that assertion seems dubious. (to her benefit, not mine).
but she’s really pretty and i’m excited that she’ll be in something cool!

    • jethrine

I would hardly call her “pretty” – her face looks like a frying pan.

    • @michaela

poor you – definitely NOT a compliment

  • bruno

so not excited for julia styles. for a show that’s been rocking a high note i’m praying this isn’t going to be a brutally low one. remember that time when julia styles returned to the 3rd borne installment and sucked it up as borne’s totally unbelievable former former relationship? like that.

    • KarenL

Totally agree! I’m not a Julia Stiles fan and would prefer if her “guest” appearance on the show remain as brief as possible

      • jed

don’t like her either – don’t know what the excitement could possibly be about – of all the people to pick, why her? answer: her agents lobbied hardest and longest for the gig…that’s what it’s all about

    • Yvette

It was established in “The Bourne Supremacy” that Julia’s character–Nicky Parsons–was Jason Bourne’s contact/handler in Paris (where they both lived) for three years prior to his amnesia. I thought the suggest that something may have gone on between them in Paris was entirely feasible. I can’t wait to see Julia in “Dexter!”

  • Nerdista

I just hope she’s not a “girl Dexter”.
