I met Mr. McCarthy at Chiller Theatre autograph show in New Jersey perhaps five years ago. He was fantastic and funny and even offered me a beer!

I had the pleasure of meeting Kevin McCarthy at a convention when he was helping promote Inner Space. He graciously signed autographs from his many fans. He allowed himself to be accessible to his fans, both young and old. I remember Invasion of the Body Snatchers (original, of course) and Inner Space; yes, I even remember Flamingo Road. His talent will be sorely missed. RIP Kevin Mccarthy!

And he was in at least 1 Twilight Zone, where he played a professor who was thousands of years old. It was a wonderful episode.

It was one of the series’ finest moments! It was called “Long Live Walter Jameson” and McCarthy/Jameson played a man who couldn’t die. Truly eerie, and his performance was note-perfect. I wonder if Kevin–considering his age–really did have a little Walter Jameson in him!

And, of course, KM played “Uncle Walter” in the 1983 Twilight Zone movie. He was great in everything he did.

When I was growing up, Kevin McCarthy, Richard Crenna and Darren McGavin were television main stays. McCarthy was also in a lot of B movies. I saw him more than I saw a lot of family members and for that he was like a member of the family. Rest in peace, Mr. McCarthy. You entertained million during your very long life.

That fellow said it best; Darren McGavin; Richard Crenna; and, Kevin were mainstays of early TV. The A-Team; Flamingo Road; China Beach … a first-class act all the way. Really, a rather remarkable actor. He will be missed and I hope remmebered. Rest In Peace!

I still remember watching Invasion of the Body Snatchers as a kid. Definately in the top 10 or maybe top 5 sci-fi movies of all time. It scared the crap out of me. I can still hear the air raid siren and wake up wondering if I am human or alien. To this day I can’t eat anything that comes from a pod. Thank you Kevin.

Great article. I hope TCM decides to pay tribute by showing Bodysnatchers. (or even better a little Kevin McCarthy-fest).

When McCarthy was touring the country in “Give ‘Em Hell, Harry!”, I was privileged enough to be one of two drama students at my university to pick him up at the airport and chauffeur him. What a nice gentleman! As a side note, as we were standing in the airport, he spies actress Stella Stevens, and they engage each other in conversation. He introduced us to her as if we were actually in the same circles! He was truly a great guy and gave me a memory I’ll never forget.

I was fortunate enough to interview Kevin McCarthy in 1995 for a television spot. We met at the premier for the Access Software Incorporated Tex Murphy video game that used real Hollywood actors and an Aussie director for the cut scenes. As always, Kevin gave a great acting performance in the movie scenes for the game. I made the mistake of approaching him without an introduction, so he informed me “I am here with my family and I would appreciate it if you wouldn’t bother me.” When my publicist approached him and explained, Kevin was very personable and made quite a few jokes. He was very nice to me for the rest of the premier showing and the party after. I also remember the Tanya Roberts interview from that computer game–movie premier. She was a very nice lady who adopted me for the rest of the show after we had an enjoyable and funny interview.

    Thanks for the memories Kevin.

“I don’t know how many time I’ve told those boys, never call chicks broads.” – R.J. Fletcher, UHF

By living as long as he did, it really is striking that he played the ageless Walter Jameson in “Twilight Zone”. It was also a great surprise to find him in Robert Altman’s BUFFALO BILL & THE INDIANS movie. He really did some great work over his long career.

One of his last major releases was Joe Dante’s LOONEY TUNES: BACK IN ACTION where he turns in a cameo as his INVASION character, Dr. Bennell, hidden away in Area 52, clearly driven stark raving mad and carrying a pod. Dante really had a soft spot for him and Dick Miller throughout his films. RIP Mr. McCarthy

I always think of Kevin’s CLASSIC Twilight Zone episode “Long Live Walter Jameson”. It is one of the all-time GREAT episodes. Like his character says: “Nothing lasts forever..”. RIP Kevin.

I also remember him from a guest role on the Golden Girls. Charming actor.

My memory of Kevin McCarthy is from some television commercials he did in the 1970’s (I think they were ads for a tire company). At the time he had a distinctive mustache, and a strong broadcaster’s voice, and a self-assured but not overbearing authority.

My dad took me to a film festival in Charlotte, where Mr. McCarthy appeared. I was 12 and had never seen “invasion of the Body Snatchers”, but my Dad sent me over to get an autograph from him. He was very friendly and gracious, a great storyteller. As I was leaving he shouted something at me. I asked my dad why he had yelled “Beware of pot!” at me. Once I saw the movie I realized it was “Beware of pods!”
