Image Credit: Eric Leibowitz/FXLast night’s final two episodes of Louie were as provocative, emotional, and downright filthy as the rest of the series. It nimbly moved from slapsticky bits — like Ricky Gervais shoving cottonballs in Louie’s mouth — to more serious meditations on the nature of relationships, and each moment drove at the same point: There’s nothing else on TV like this.
The first episode, “Gym,” used a seemingly endless supply of scatological jokes to remind Louie — and us — that we’re all going to die. What’s grosser and more basely animalistic than this bit about poops? Oh. Right. Our own mortality. In the second episode, Louie had to admit that he’s sort of a miserable loner, except for those moments when he’s on stage. The most important relationship in his life, other than with his kids, is with is audience, and that’s a weird hard thing to realize.
Louie‘s first season has been all over the place, with episodes about terrible parenting, a stunningly in-depth description of Jesus’ crucifixion, a silly doctor, the history of homophobia, and one of the best on-drugs scenes of all time. It’s also been decidedly disconnected, with each episode operating in isolation from the others, with very few characters recurring or plotlines carrying over episode to episode. It’s more an anthology of premises than a serialized television show, and I mean that in a good way. If there’s anyone who has kooky ideas that deserve to be fleshed out and played with, it’s Louis C.K.
Did you love the first season of Louie as much as I did, PopWatchers? What was your favorite episode? What do you hope to see in season 2?

I LOVED the 1st season of Louie!! Much like life, it covered everything from comedy, ideology, self-worth, morality– just a brilliant show.
Louie was the best!!! I can’t wait for season 2!!!!
Brilliant first season!
For a “comedy”, it may not have always been funny, but it was very interesting the majority of the time and ALWAYS made me feel something (even if it was something I didn’t want to feel).
I’m looking forward to being outraged when it’s ignored during next year’s Emmy season.
Didn’t this just premiere like, two weeks ago?
This show is depressingly brilliant.
This show is greatness. One of the (very few) best shows on television!!
Brilliant, brilliant, brilliant! Bring on Season 2!
one of the best most real life shows on cable today, I cant wait for his movie to come out. rock on season2
Louis is an amazing comedian, and ‘Louie’ is an amazing show! I hope it receives all the ratings and accolades that it deserves.
best new show in a long, long time. i hope it doesn’t become over-produced next season because it’s perfectly unpredictable now, and that’s rare.
Much respect to FX for even putting a show like this on the air and for backing off so Louis can do his thing his way. And thanks for a second season.
I like the lady he talks to in the park, they were in a sitcom on cable.Cant remember the name,it was just as good as this show.
The name of that HBO show was “Lucky Louie” and Pamela Adlon played his wife. She’s presently a regular on the HBO show
“Californication.” I, too, love Louis’ and Pamela’s interaction — they have great chemistry. Hopefully, they’ll have more of the two of them together. So glad to hear they’ve renewed the show for a 2nd season! Really love it!!
Genius. The Episode about Catholic School and Religion was brilliant.
JohnBender — I think you mean it’s brilliantly depressing!
Love me some Louie! This show is great really excited for season 2.
