Bruce Campbell talks 'Evil Dead' (EW Exclusive): 'Stay tuned for the Hologram version'

evil-dead-blurayImage Credit: Sylvain Gaboury/PR PhotosTo a certain segment of EW readers — you know who you are — the name Bruce Campbell is synonymous with “Ash”, the wise-cracking, chainsaw-wielding character he brought to life in the awesome trilogy of Evil Dead films. In the years since Spider-man director Sam Raimi cut his teeth with the first Evil Dead back  in 1981, Campbell has snowballed into a cult-movie legend. Heroic, hilarious, and haunted by hell, Campbell’s onscreen alterego is right up there in the horror-nerd pantheon with Freddy Krueger, Jason Voorhees, and Michael Myers. With one big difference: Ash is a good guy. As is the man who played him, it turns out. Campbell was kind enough to sit down and answer some of our most-pressing (and impertinent) questions on the eve of the original Evil Dead‘s debut on Blu-Ray earlier this week. Sit back, put down your Necronomicons, and listen in to what he had to say…

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: Seriously, another f—in’ version of The Evil Dead on disc? I’ve already bought the Special Edition, the Collector’s Edition, the Ultimate Edition, and The Book of the Dead Limited Edition, not to mention the VHS tapes and laserdiscs. Tell me why I should buy The Evil Dead on Blu-ray?
BRUCE CAMPBELL:
Because there is no other Blu-ray transfer, Mr. Smarty Pants. Sam Raimi personally supervised it, so if you want to see what the film finally, REALLY looks like, check it out.

What is Ash doing now? Still working at the S-Mart?
I have no idea. I hate to break it to you, but Ash does not really exist.

When was the last time you held a chainsaw? And did it feel…good?
I have people to do that for me now. And THAT feels good…

Are you and Sam ever going to make an Evil Dead 4? What’s the latest?
We’re waiting just a few more years so we can do a “Cocoon” version of The Evil Dead, which takes place at a rest home.

Wasn’t there some talk about a remake of The Evil Dead with a new bunch of younger actors? How would you feel about that?
There isn’t any talk of that, so there is nothing to comment on. It looks like we will actively pursue the remake some time next year (with actors of all ages). We’re excited to tell a new version of that story, minus the green garden hoses used for special effects.

What’s your favorite of the three and why?
I’m partial to Evil Dead II because we had just enough skill, budget, and creative freedom to do a cool, kickass flick.

Who’s your favorite member of The Three Stooges…after Shemp, of course?
Shemp is forever.

As a cult movie legend, what’s the weirdest encounter you’ve ever had with a fan?
How could I pick just one? Weird is the norm with Evil Dead fans, so what really scares me is meeting a Sunday school teacher at a convention who is dying to get her Evil Dead DVD signed.

Again, seriously, another Evil Dead disc? Do you guys promise this is the last one I’ll have to buy?
We promise nothing. The difference between DVD and Blu-ray is so amazing, it’s worth having a look. As filmmakers, we feel the need to keep this 30-year-old film available in the latest technology, which is ever-changing. So stay tuned for the Hologram version in 2014.
