'Top Chef' recap: D.C., we have a problem

top-chefImage Credit: David Giesbrecht/BravoCongrats to Top Chef for taking home an Emmy last Sunday and upsetting seven-time champ The Amazing Race! But the excitement only reiterated just how friggin’ awesome last season was. Last season’s chefs — the Voltaggio brothers and my girl Jen — seriously out-shine D.C.‘s less-stellar cooks.

But I’m not going to get all negative Nancy on you because last night, we finally got — dare I say it—an exciting episode. All five cheftestants—Angelo, Kelly, Tiffany, Ed and Kevin — are pretty much on the same level, and the only thing separating them at this point is motivation, whether that be motivation to get further than they could’ve imagined or acquire a mail-order bride

Speaking of brides, hallelujah! We finally got answers about Angelo’s confusing back story. Well, some answers. To summarize: He got divorced last year because his ex’s family thought a man doesn’t belong in the kitchen (funny because the Beaumont, Texas IHOP didn’t think a woman belonged in the kitchen), but they share a child together. No word yet on the Russian bride-to-be.

For the final Quickfire of the season, Food & Wine editor-in-chief Dana Cowin stopped by to dish about vino. Everyone practiced their best swirl, chose their wine, and had to make a dish to be paired with their drink of choice. It was a dream come true for some (Angelo) and less so for others (Tiffany), but the one left with sour grapes (those puns last more than one episode, right?) was Kevin, whose braised pork failed in the pressure cooker. (Maybe he should talk to Roger Ebert.)  Quail became the next best thing because, you know, a delicate meat like that always pairs nicely with a hearty merlot.

On the subject of meat, does anyone else wonder if the cheftestants actually wash their hands after messing around with raw meat? I doubt there’s much time to soap and lather, but don’t tell me all that Dial Nutri-Skin is all for naught!

Dana and waiter movie theater concession stand worker Padma gave Kevin’s strange pairing a thumbs down. Even without being a wine person, Tiffany managed quite nicely with a cocoa and black pepper-crusted Wagyu tenderloin, and Ed impressed with a different Wagyu interpretation, with grilled rib eye to go with Italian wine.

Angelo ended up taking the prize for his pairing of sautéed foie gras with white wine, but there seemed to be a glimpse of sadness that it was a trip to London and not cold hard cash. That Visa is still out of reach, my friend.

But that frown quickly turned upside down when Angelo and the gang were told the final four would be heading to Singapore, the first time TC has gone international.

Color me surprised that Asian cuisine-loving Angelo was positively dizzy with the news. “I feel Asian inside 100 percent,” he said. “I tingle when I think about it. Just to be in Singapore.” He feels Asian? He tingles? He has deep-set loves for Asians and Russians? This man is a riddle wrapped in an enigma.

But before going out of the country, they had to go to outer space. Well not really; they just went to NASA headquarters. Their mission was to create an out-of-this-world dish for NASA officials and astronauts. Anthony Bourdain joined to promote his new book, and considering his playful banter with Eric, I think the dinner table services to follow are going to lack a little something without him.

Two astronauts explained that they’d have to make a meal that’s edible at zero gravity — food that can be freeze dried. And even though there seemed to be a sense of doom, musically anyway, the female astronaut did a fun little swirly dance in her spaceship and the cheftestants were off on their way.

As much as Kelly calls herself a space nerd, can she diagram like Angelo? The confusing drawing and the notion of making short ribs seemed to disgust Tom and simultaneously shame Angelo, who went on to make his ribs with his knees shaking.

But Tom didn’t give Ed much confidence either. “I didn’t see too many Middle Eastern astronauts up there,” he says of Ed’s Moroccan-inspired dish. That seemed so beside the point. Anyone else find that comment a bit off?

As for Tiffany, she didn’t need Tom’s watchful eye to tell her that her pan-seared halibut was doomed. She had to toss her mussels after seeing that they froze and change around her dish in the 11th hour, much like Kevin in the Quickfire—and we all know how well that worked out for him.

But if we know Tiffany, we know nothing can break that girl’s spirit. Her positive attitude and hearty laughs are enough to make a girl forget about a failing dish. And so are the leather seats of a Toyota Avalon apparently. So smooth!

For the first time this season, all of the dishes were stand-outs, with only a small difference between the winner and loser. Didn’t that happen, like, every challenge last season?

Breaking it down, Kelly flexed her Provencal muscles with an artichoke barigoule that accompanied her pan-seared halibut. Eric practically had a culinary boner and Tom joined in on the praise. But NASA food scientist Vickie Kloeris was suspicious of how all the liquid would translate to space food.

In an effort to prove that white people can go ethnic, Ed stuck to his Moroccan spice guns and banged out a rack of lamb that pleased everyone except Eric (“too complicated”) and an astronaut, who said there’s no such thing as “trash” on spaceships, so that lamb bone would’ve become their little pet on board.

Kevin, who seemed particularly driven this episode, made a perfectly seasoned, well-cooked NY strip, that would hopefully remind astronauts of home. But leave it to Bourdain, who thought Kev played it too safe, to suck out any semblance of a sweet gesture: “It’s Top Chef sirloin. For god’s sake!” (Still love you, Tony.)

Well, that left us with Angelo and Tiffany. A too-sweet short rib (Angelo) or a pan-seared halibut sans mussels (Tiffany)? In the end, despite its inexplicable ginger component, Angelo, who looked totally battered emotionally and physically this episode, took home the win—that Toyota and the honor of having his dish served in space. I wouldn’t say I was surprised to see him win, but I definitely didn’t see Tiffany’s boot coming.

To be fair, like the judges said, the differences between the best and the worst were minuscule. It came down to Tiffany’s overwhelming pea shoots, mealy tomatoes and bitter pepper flavor—critiques that probably wouldn’t have thrown her out earlier in the season.

With Tiffany now gone, do we still feel invested in the show? Do we care who wins? Well, most of us probably do, but it won’t be the same without our Beaumont bride-to-be.

Next week, the top four head to sweaty Singapore where Ed turns tomato red, Padma gets sassy, and we find out who our top three will be.

What did you guys think of the episode? Did you see Tiff’s exit coming? Did someone else deserve to go home? Sound off below!

I was pissed at her for not carrying it off. she has been a bright spot in the whole season and I’ll miss her. Kevin will be next, I’m guessing. But good luck to them all.

    • Javabooknut

I loved last season but I think you are idealizing it a bit. I actually was frustrated early in last season cause it was so obvious who the final 4 would be. There was Jen, Brian, Mike, Kevin, a couple on their heels and everyone else. At least this season we’ve had some real competitions, suprises (kenny going home?@%%@?), Alex, Amanda and Stephen slipping past much better chefs, and a good number of viable contestants. Maybe there isn’t anyone of the last year’s final four’s excellence but it’s not a foregone conclusion.

      • michele

Javabooknut, I disagree a bit. I don’t necessarily want a lack of competition but I would rather see chefs consistently doing great food, not chefs doing mediocre food. It seems like some challenges this season were who was the best of the worst not who won. I would like to see it where anyone who’s good enough can win, but it’s nice to have standouts. It seems like there haven’t been many standouts & those who were “the best” are on the bottom too much. Everyone has bad days, but they seem to have too many. Angelo made peanut butter & celery for an eliminatin challenge for crying out loud!

      • DW

I agree with Javabooknut. Last season it was VERY obvious who would make it to the finals, whereas this season I feel the only sure thing was Angelo.

    • Rasha

I was really rooting for her. Now that she’s gone, I really don’t care who wins. I might not even watch until it’s over. I feel like Kevin should have been gone because he’s so inconsistent! I like Angelo, but there’s no one else I’m really invested in.

This season has been filled with a lot of weirdos. LOL!

      • Javabooknut

I’ve loved Ed ever since I saw him as a soux chef on an older episode of Iron Chef America. I was like, “How is this guy not doing better?” and low and behold he started his late in the season surge. He’s a nice guy and I want him to win.

    • Fatima

I’m going to have a hard time caring without Tiffany. She was so much fun, but I should have expected it considering Top Chef goes out of its way to punish likable people. Rooting for Angelo now.
Last season was TERRIBLE. It was so negative and depressingly anti-women.

      • ChristineOH

Yeah, I’m still upset that Carla didn’t win. I loved her and I loved Tiffany. The rest of them are meh.

    • Robbed

Well. She was my favorite and also one of the best chefs. I get mad at how this show works sometimes. I’m not too interested to see who wins now.

      • Pam

Tiffany was my pick to win. I can’t believe that she went home, but I really can’t believe that Kevin stayed. I think he’s lucked his way along this far – he’s not as good as he thinks he is. The judges must have been smoking something. And I was disappointed in Bourdain! I look forward to all his snarkiness, but he was pretty lackluster.

      • Cindy

Tiffany was who I was rooting for. She has the BEST attitude. And the greatest smile, the girl is a survivor she’ll go on to do great things I don’t think it is the last we’ll see of her the girl has “Soul”.
Congrats on your upcoming wedding all the best to you and your husband to be. (if she reads these blogs…)

      • j

Agreed. Only thing I’m watching for now is, hopefully, more info on nutty Angelo and his Russian mail-order bride – how insane is this guy? I hated Amanda, but she was hilarious when she was talking about how weird he is last episode lol. Besides Tiffany, his insanity is the best part of the show.

      • sa

I agree. I was rooting for Tiffany all the way, someone who looked real and professional. I felt I could relate to her. I also like Ed though too. I have no interest in watching the rest. I can read here about Angelo’s mail order bride. LOL

    • Alan

Why is there no Masterchef recap on EW??? Top Chef is ok but a bit long in the tooth…Masterchef rocks!!

      • Pennagirl

Amen, Alan. Totally agree TC has Jump the Shark!

      • CM

How has it jumped the shark, 4 days ago it won the Emmy. TC is kickass and Masterchef is too. However I don’t get how regular people know how to make pasta from scratch…seems a little suspicious to me.

      • Kris

I wish people would stop using “Jump the Shark” without understanding what it actually means. If you find the format a little tired or boring, that’s one thing. But TC hasn’t done anything ridiculous or strange to warrant the term. Look it up.

      • debi

agreed- MasterChef rocked! i think TopChef has had it’s run…but i think it’s cooked. really boring since kenny left- could care less who wins.

    • paradoxguy

Tiffany lost mainly because the food in this elimination round was all of very high quality–the judges had positive comments about all of them and only a few negative remarks–and thus the margin of error was very narrow. Tiffany made 1-2 minor errors, which was enough to eliminate her. In previous elimination rounds, her halibut would have easily made it through and even would have won her 1-2 elimination challenges. I can’t help but wonder if the frozen mussels incident disrupted her confidence and concentration and resulted in the minor problems that eliminated her in this round.

    • Elizabeth

If that Kevin makes another flippin’ steak I am boycotting! I’ll miss Tiffany, she was back to back to back winning yet deserved to go, so unfortunately, were stuck with Kelly the hack, Kevin the bore with pruned sideburns Angelo the desperado with an inconsistent showing and Ed who is really hitting some notes. Sure I’ll keep watching but. Feel that prior seasons had some cooking that I envied and these cheftestants haven’t brought anything to the table I couldn’t do on a Sunday night.

    • debi

i still miss kenny- could care less about these four!

      • shay

So, you care about them? Or do you mean you couldn’t care less about these four, which would mean you don’t care about them at all? Or perhaps I’m being harsh and English isn’t your first language.

    • holly

Kevin snivels too much and is not a team player. I really want him gone next week. I wish he had gone home instead of Tiffany.

  • Nia

I am sick that Tiffany left. I couldn’t believe my ears or eyes. I wish it were someone else!!!! I have lost interest because it would be so predictable if weirdo sandwich shop Angelo won. Chances are it won’t be a woman winning this year.

I’ll bet money that his ex inlaws are glad to be rid of him. It was probably way more than him being a chef that weirded them out!!!

    • Flyer

Did you notice the way he was rubbing the key to the car he’d just won? Veeerry weird.

      • allie08

Angelo seriously creeps me out. The way he described making love to his food, the TRIPLE licking of his spoon while cooking and tasting, the crabs disclosure, the spoon rubbing…the guy is just plain nasty.

      • Sienna

I noticed a lot of the chefs licking their spoons, and sticking it back in the food.

        Gross

      • K_Sull

He was saying something as well, like he was thanking top chefs. Go back and listen carefully.

      • Jay

He actually said “Thank you Jesus”.

      • Cindy

        So creepy, so so creepy!

      • Leigh

        “To tell you the truth.”

      • MoHub

Angelo’s thing with the car key read like a combination of saying his rosary and stroking a sex toy. Very disturbing, indeed.

    • Coconut

Um, there are no women left on the show so chances are that you’re right.

      • Fatima

        Um, there’s still one.

      • KCatty

Um, last time I checked, Kelly was a woman.

      • Olive

Kelly’s a woman and I hope she wins.

    • Jelana

If food had a sex offender list, Angelo’s name would be listed first.

      • Cassy

Best comment. Yes, this guy is truly creepy.

      • Cindy

        Too Funny!!

    • sa

Nia you are so right. I never liked Angelo, his talents be darned, he is a creepy mf’er.

  • SUZIE

Only caught the end as I was leaving for work. Looking forward to seeing it when I get home (recorded it). Not sure how I feel about Tiff but you are correct in stating they are very equal at this point. Makes it a little boring, maybe someone will mix it up a bit.

  • beth

“All five cheftestants—Angelo, Kelly, Tiffany, Ed and Kevin — are pretty much on the same level” – yeah, they all suck. Last season raised the bar so high that the current contestants seem like the average burger flippers. I am disappointed in Bravo for picking this cast. We are going to have to suffer with yet another line cook winner on par with Hosea or Ilan.

    • Mari

Bingo on Hosea and Ilan. However, the remaining chefs seem much more talented than the two of them.

  • beth

Line cook(Ilan), Hosea, and now…a possible sandwich shop owner could be Top Chef! How can TC keep doing this to us!?! Last season we were blessed with a talented cast that finally raised the bar. What does TC do in response? Give us a bunch of burger flippers and an overload of liberal luv for all things DC. This season is so disappointing.

    • NYC

No need to bring up liberals.

      Food should be progressive.
I don’t know about you, but I like when chefs invent new things.
I don’t like the same thing over and over again.

I like moving forward and not backwards.

      • NYC

I know you were referring to politics.
However, I think there is nothing wrong with having progressive ideas in politics or food.

If we didn’t move forward, I guess we would still believe that separate but equal was correct.

As Crazy Danielle would say…just sayin

      • CM

Who cares what they do for a living. Angleo obviously knows tons more than just how to make a sandwich. So what if he owns a sandwich shop that doesn’t mean that he can’t cook. He travels around the world learning different foods and he has been the best chef the whole time. But since your a conservative I can understand how you can’t really think outside of the box, and give him a chance. Either way, I was rooting for Tiff!

  • Go Ed

Tiffany had the most negative criticisms about her dish, so I knew she would go. I am rooting for Ed, but now we don’t get to see their cute little flirtation anymore.
Is the name of Angelo’s restaurant Chinese for “thank you”? His adorable baby looked Asian. I wonder if his ex-wife is from China.

    • Sookie

Since he said that his in-laws were very concerned about “losing face” I would suppose they are Japanese. I also find Angelo a bit strange but at least he has some personality. Since Tiffany is gone I suppose I’ll be rooting for Kelly and Ed. Kenny just whines too much.

      • Ab

Kenny was already kicked out. you mean Kevin.

  • Mary

With all the great episode prizes this season, I’m wondering if Tiffany thought she wasn’t going to win it all and she thought..Well I’ve already won a lot of cash and a trip or two..She has a wedding to plan and maybe she thought better of going to Singapore. I half wonder if she didn’t sabotage herself?! Her missteps seemed very amateurish to me…

    • Marsha

In her exit interview, she hardly eemed relieved to be gone. At this late stage, anyone can go for a minor misstep. Sorry to see her go. Now, I hope Ed wins.

    • Jamie

Huh? Did you even watch the end of the episode Mary? Tiffany was obviously upset with having to leave – more so than any other contestant so far. Get a clue. I hope Kevin goes next, then Kelly and that Ed and Angelo are the final two. Angelo may be strange, but I have liked him all season – he seems to know a lot about food and I hope he wins (and that he changes his mind about the Russian mail-order bride).

      • Javabooknut

        There’s always a final 3, not 2.

      • Kowkow

No that wasn’t always the case, Javabooknut. In season 2, Sam and Elia were eliminated in the next to last episode, leaving Ilan and Marcel to compete for the Top Chef title.

    • Fatima

Tiffany is BOUND to win the fan favorite award at least.

      • Dan

Tiffany will win fan favorite, I am sure. At this point its always some little thing for which someone gets sent home. Everyone else had one small mistake, she had 2 small mistakes. Except to a little extent in the finale, they do not consider past performance.

    • Mark

Mary i have to agree with you, i think she talked about our wedding to much.

      • Judy M.

Mark, are you Tiffany’s fiance? You said she talked about “our” wedding too much. She was a generous and talented chef who was always helpful to others and never negative. I will miss her. Now I can only visit her restaurant and see her (hopefully) in person.

      • Cindy

Interesting never thought about it that way.

    • Lee

I’m not sorry to see Tiffany leave. She was getting too arrogant–and greedy. What did she say last nite–something about already winning a trip to Paris and now wanting to win a trip to London?! Can you be anymore arrogant and greedy? It seems as the competition has gone on, Tiffany became more arrogant and Angelo became more humble. He seemed genuinely grateful to have won last nite. I hope he wins.

      • Dan

Both parts of that equation could be editing.

      • CM

What are you talking about, they are chefs they are suppose to be arrogant. Name me one chef in the universe that is not arrogant. And FYI just because you have confidence in yourself and you think you did a good job doesn’t mean that you are arrogant.

      • Malaika

Winning one trip and wanting to win another is not being greedy, either. It’s a competition. Everybody wants to win. Sheesh!

  • Tibby

So, Nia, you are only watching because you thought a woman was going to win this year? If that is your primary interest, switch over to Lifetime or WE ~ everything is geared towards the uterus!!

    • ani

no, perhaps you could learn how to read then make appropriate inferences from said reading. while Nia would like to see a woman win, what is turning her off is that the editing has been setting angelo up for the win from the very first episode. Thus, she is disliking the predictability, especially when Tiffany suddenly pulled ahead of the pack and really started shining.

p.s. i love lifetime movies. that is some good sh*t

      • Brett

Have you people been watching “Top Chef” for the past few years? The editing has ALWAYS set up the winner.

      • ani

haha, perhaps you decided to rid yourself of this memory: but I did NOT see Hosea coming

      • ani

i say the word ‘perhaps’ a lot. my bad.

      • ginger

Ani, you’re right…I still think Stefan Richter should have won. Hosea? Really?

      • Ab

I’ve always disagreed that editing always sets up the winner. By that definition, Yukon Cornelius (Kevin last year) should have won last year and so should have Stefan. Heck, even this reviewer said at the beginning that the editing was setting up Kenny and Angelo for head to head battles on to the end and then Kenny went home a couple of weeks ago. That took her by surpirse (as it did me).

    • Nia

shush! i don’t care for lifetime or we (though Snapped keeps me informed on how to kill a mate if I ever have to).
@ani- Thanks! I was really rooting for the ladies since the angry (kevin), weird (alex), alpha males (kenny & angelo) came out guns a blazing.

      • boymommy

lol. good for you nia. What a jerk tibby was. “kill a mate if I ever had to”. Too funny…

      • Fatima

Kevin IS angry. Which is why he’s still there because ever since Season 2, Top Chef has dedicated itself to making sure everybody’s least favorite wins.

      • KCatty

        Nia, you officially rock. :)

      • Sienna

If you can’t stand the heat, stay out of the kitchen.

Male? Female? I want the best chef to win.
However, I guess I will have to wait until next season.

      • K_Sull

Maybe TC will do what they did in S5 (NYC, Hosea win) where they brought back Jeff McInnis (he was #5, eliminated before the finale) back and had him compete for a spot again. Not saying it’ll happen, but fingers crossed for Tiffany!

      • Ab

@Fatima–What?! Hosea was a favorite and a nice guy. Stephanie won the whole thing and fan favorite. While Kevin (Yukon Cornelius) won fan favorite the Voltaggio’s were clearly not hated. What do you mean that TC wants the least liked to win? That’s just a dumb statement.

  • Svetlana

I totally agree with the recap regarding last season and its greatly deserved Emmy. The chefs were so much more talented, that I think anyone in the top 8 (excluding Robin) would’ve won this season with one hand tied behind their back. The chefs this season are so pedestrian and uninspired that I find myself fast-forwarding through most of the episodes. No one has the creativity or technique of the Voltaggio’s, the amazing palate of Kevin or the refinement that Jen had. Top chef is one of the few reality shows I can stomach because the people on it actually have a skill. This season they are focusing more on the fighting and drama and much less on the food which I think is the reason that a lot of longtime TC fans are so unhappy with this season. If I wanted to watch people scheming and sabotaging I’d watch garbage like The awful Housewives franchise. That stuff has no place on Top Chef. Thankfully I saved season 6 on my DVR and re-watch it often when I want to be inspired and actually learn something about food. Its also obvious that the judges aren’t into this season either because they seem completely annoyed and disinterested by the crop of losers this season. I know I should stop watching if I hate it but I keep hoping it will magically revert to the old TC. Though this late in the game I doubt it will!

    • Dort

I so agree. This is the 2nd season (season 2 was a bust) that I haven’t watched the marathon of past episodes. Somethings missing: talent, sportsmanship and no real stand out.

      • Jason

Season 2 are you kidding? I loved that season. Although I’m a Marcel fan…

    • Diane

well said-next to last year this group seems so Reality TV. There are thousands of Reality TV shows out there-this one used to offer more… now it doesn’t. I miss Kevin, Brian, Michael, Jenn and even Stephon from the year before.

    • Coco

I completely agree! What a letdown compared to last season, all the contestents I was rooting for left early and we were stuck with Amanda and Alex for 3/4 of the season.

      • michele

Coco, I agree. I think Arnold when home too early. He started doing well, then was gone because of Lynne’s cooking of the pasta. Meanwhile, Amanda made it through each time.

    • Lyn

Very true that they’ve been goosing all the personality clashes like crazy this season. “Real Housewives of the Jersey Shore Gourmet Kitchen.” MOST annoying was to read an interview w/ last week’s loser, Amanda, in which she said sure, Alex made his own pea puree right next to me, no one stole anything! The producers played a lot of people with that one.

      • rory

glad someone else had noticed the sameness of all of these shows. They have all been “Andy Cohenized” At least there is less bleeping this season. It was getting rough to get the point of some conversations with so much of them getting bleeped.

    • tnsmoke

I totally agree. And last year the only fighting was just people reacting to Robin, who would of drove any of us to murder! The Voltaggio brother just talked trash to each other like they do in private. No one was downright mean. Michael was helpful and polite and most of the chefs STILL are close. Season 6 won Top Chef their Emmy.

      • Kowkow

Michael is polite?! He seemed to be a lot more brash, compared to his much calmer brother, Bryan. Although his reaction towards Robin maybe was understandable.

    • Seriously?

To the Editors: Can we put a limit on how long the comments can be? Reading one article is enough. We don’t need another one in the “comments” section.

      • shaye

If it’s long, don’t read it. You won’t be quizzed on the comments at a later date.

  • Svetlana

Wow, I cant believe how long my post was, SORRY!!

    • boymommy

You were right on Svetlana. I almost fell off my chair when they announced Top Chef as winner of the Emmy. Then I realized they based it on last year’s shows, which were so fabulous. As I’ve posted before, we got spoiled last couple years with interesting and good chefs. This year sucks! So disappointing.

    • Coconut

No, your post hit the nail on the head. They have really diluted the power of this show with a bunch of sub par, milquetoast chefs. Hopefully, next season will be a vast improvement!

  • Julz

So sad about Tiffany leaving. I also thought Tom’s comment about not seeing many Middle Eastern people in space very strange. Does that mean that astronaut’s can’t have international tastes?

    • Brett

Yes. Remember, NASA IS a US government agency; not really known for exotic stuff.

      • sanda

But there is an International Space Station that much of this food it going to.

    • michele

Maybe Tom was trying to psych Ed out. He was questioning why Ed would produce a dish that might not appeal to everyone. It did sound weird, but maybe it was just a little psych out.

      • Dan

That seemed to be his goal with each of the 5, I think he intentionally was trying to see if he could psych any of them into changing the dish. he does little tricks all the time to see if he can throw them off their game or if they will stay true to what their vision is.

Yeah but he was redeemed when Anthony Bourdain said he felt his food captured that regions food. And he’s actually eaten in that part of the world. Tom got thrown under the bus… So, If Ed lost last night he forever would still have bragging rights, that a world class chef the likes of Anthony Bourdain said that he liked his food. That’s something to bite on!
        No another note…
I was laughing at him,Anthony Bourdain ribbing Eric Ripert. I would of imagined the other way around. Although in Anthony Bourdain’s Book No Reservations he comments in the back that Riperts Restaurant Le Bernardin is one of his go to places. They obviously have great respect for each other. And eat each other food. Not a bad thing.
So sorry for the food puns.

Tom made a comment about the US Space system. No need to turn everything into a racit comment. That’s absurd.

      • Malaika

        Who said it was racit(sic)?

    • MoHub

Tom needs a geography book. Morocco is in western North Africa, not the Middle East, although the food is similar.

When the winning and losing dishes are so close and there are only five contestants left, shouldn’t the judges consider their cooking from the entire season to help determine who goes home and who goes to the finals? Tiffany clearly is a better chef than Kevin, who although he tried really hard, should have gone home. In any case, NONE of these chefs would have made it half way through last season.

I think it shows how the show’s emphasis on judging every dish individually, doesn’t necessarily produce the best chef. Tiffany got it right, 9 times out of 10, and Kevin got it wrong, 9 times out of 10… it just so happened her one failure coincided with his one success. I do think they should consider over all quality of the food the contestant has produced for all challenges.

I agree with you. I think there have been times in the past when they’ve definitely taken past performance into consideration when choosing the winner. I removed top chef from my dvr listing as I no longer care who wins after Tiffany’s ouster.

I could be wrong, but I could swear that I heard Angelo say, without the slightest sense of irony, that he was submissive to the short ribs when he made love to them. Like Vincent Libretti, his creep factor goes up every week…

LOL! I hadn’t put those two comments together but you are so right!

Living in Singapore and knowing who actually won makes the loss of Tiffany even sadder. The last four are tragic. I’ve been a fan since the beginning and have a number of friends who’ve been on the show. This is the 2nd worst season as far as contestants and everyone concerned should be embarrassed after winning the Emmy for a great previous season that the quality is so poor this year.

    • Svetlana

Who won? It will be our secret. You can save me the trouble of suffering through the rest of this awful season.

      • Zosimus

Ah I live in Singapore so if u told you someone would kill me

    • julie

this makes me think it’s angelo that wins. tiffany was my favorite but i don’t really mind the other three that are left. the only tragedy, in my opinion, would be angelo winning.

      • sanda

With out Tiffany it should be Angelo. They were the best over the entire season. Ed and Kelly should be second and Third. Kevin sucks.

      • Caramelonion

I can’t agree more…It’s gotten to the point that I can’t stand to hear his voice…and that whole thing last night about “Making love to his dish” was icky. I hope of the last few Ed wins…but I don’t know if I want to watch now that Tiffany is gone!

I really was hoping Kevin was the one going home. But like Kenny earlier this year, the judges stayed true to the criteria that the worst performer that week is eliminated. Clearly Kenny was a better chef than Alex and Amanda but he bombed out that week. Tiffany is, IMO, a much better chef than Kevin or Kelly. Too bad she had one bad week….
