Now is the winter of my excitement: Kevin Spacey to play Richard III on stage!

kevin-spacey-sam-mendesImage Credit: Dave M. Benett/Getty ImagesA ticket, a ticket, my kingdom for a ticket! High among the new stage shows I can’t wait to see next season: a transcontinental production of William Shakespeare’s Richard III starring Kevin Spacey, who will reteam with American Beauty director Sam Mendes for the event. According to an announcement today, the show will premiere in February 2012 at Brooklyn’s BAM Harvey Theatre for a limited run, followed by a short tour and a run at London’s Old Vic Theatre from May through August 2012. (The company then plans “a more extensive world tour” from late August through October 2012.)

Spacey, who won a Tony in 1991 for Neil Simon’s Lost in Yonkers, seems particularly well-suited to playing the Machiavellian monarch Richard III. There’s something a little slimy about Spacey in many of his performances, and both his Oscar-winning roles — Roger Kint in The Usual Suspects and Lester Burnham in American Beauty — show what skill he has adapting his physical appearance, bearing, and mannerisms as the part requires. Playing the Bard’s famed hunchback? No problem.

A Spacey-topped Richard III marks a fitting finale to the Bridge Project, an ambitious three-year program overseen by BAM, Mendes’ Neal Street Productions, and the Old Vic (where Spacey has served as artistic director since 2003). Bridge has mounted revivals of classic plays like The Cherry Orchard and The Tempest in both New York and London, with casts that include both American stars (Ethan Hawke, Josh Hamilton) and British veterans (Rebecca Hall, Stephen Dillane). Anyone else excited about this production, PopWatchers? And what “naked villainy” would you commit to attend a performance?

Original Blue Power Ranger reveals that he was harassed on set for being gay

Categories: Television

david-yost-power-rangerImage Credit: Everett CollectionAlmost 20 years after back-flipping onto kids’ TV sets as the nerdy Blue Ranger on Fox’s Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, David Yost opened up to No Pink Spandex about his stint on the show. And during the three-part interview, Yost revealed just what happened behind-the-scenes when his character was written off the show (and sent to live on another planet): Yost actually walked off set one day after being teased about being gay.

“The reason that I walked off is that I was called ‘f—–’ one too many times,” Yost says in the clip (which is embedded after the jump). “I had just heard that several times while working on the show from creators, producers, writers, directors… Basically I just felt like i was continually being told I was not worthy of being where I am because I’m a gay person. And I’m not supposed to be an actor. And I’m not a superhero.”

After leaving the show, Yost says he experienced a nervous breakdown. But he’s been doing just fine since then, working behind the camera as a producer for reality TV shows like Temptation Island. Still, the fact that such intolerance might have taken place on set of Power Rangers kind of kills the nostalgic buzz we all have for the show, no?

Kelly Osbourne joins 'Fashion Police,' vows to tell it like it is

Kelly-OsbourneWe’ve seen her as an angst-ridden teen on The Osbournes and a dancer with a jig on Dancing With the Stars. But, now, Kelly Osbourne is coming back to TV, and this time, she’ll be taking on the role of brutally honest fashion commentator alongside Joan Rivers and stylist George Kotsiopoulos on E!’s post-Emmy Fashion Police special Aug. 30. She’ll also appear in the network’s new weekly series beginning Sept. 10.

When I think of the wee Osbourne, I think of cat-fights with her brother, Jack, on the MTV reality show, and her hilarious impersonation of Christina Aguilera doing “Jingle Bells.” And if you’ve watched any of Rivers’ past Fashion Police specials, you know bitchiness + celebrity slamming is an equation for good TV.

Plus, if there’s anyone who could keep up with Rivers’ say-anything attitude, it’d be Osbourne — or Kathy Griffin. She tells E!, “at the end of the day, if you wear something s—, you wear something s—.” Like I said, this pairing is a match made in heaven, no?

What do you guys think of Osbourne’s addition to the panel? And is anyone else now sorely missing The Osbournes?

I Love You Phillip Morris, which tells the story of a con artist (Carrey) who falls in love with his cellmate (Ewan McGregor), hasn’t had an easy time breaking whatever hoodoo curse was responsible for its numerous delays. Or has all this drama made you impatient (a.k.a. I found it on my own; thanks for nothing)? Curious minds can check out the trailer below — in case you haven’t had a chance to see it in the past seven months. READ FULL STORY »

Lunchtime Poll: Scariest film from the past 10 years?

last-exorcismImage Credit: Patti PerretSome movie-loving folks here at EW Towers live for late fall, when Oscar-hungry studios gift us their challenging, scrunchy-faced dramas. Others can’t wait for the blockbuster season of June and July, with its giant robot-ing and troubled superhero-ing and “What the hell has Nicolas Cage done with his hair?”-ing. Personally, I love this time of year, when late summer stumbles, zombie-like, into the lead-up to Halloween, and Hollywood releases a new horror film pretty much every freakin’ week.

Last Friday, for example, Piranha 3D munched its way into cinemas — and into Jerry O’Connell’s nether regions — while today sees the release of the Eli Roth-produced The Last Exorcism. Next week, Machete hits theaters, and though it’s not a horror movie, it looks like it will feature gore aplenty. Seven days after that, Milla Jovovich will be kicking the rotting rump of zombies yet again in Resident Evil: Afterlife. Also coming down the pike in the next couple of months: the M. Night Shyamalan-produced Devil, the kiddie vampire-featuring Let Me In, the Renée Zellweger-starring Case 39, the Wes Craven-directed My Soul To Take, Saw 3D, Paranormal Activity 2, I Spit on Your Grave, and Monsters.

So much for the fear-ture — do you see what I did there? — let’s talk, and vote on, the past.

'Mamma Mia!': Still a fun (but increasingly tired) romp

mamma_miaImage Credit: Joan MarcusWhen Mamma Mia! debuted in New York City on Oct. 18, 2001, EW’s film critic Owen Gleiberman lavished the ABBA-inspired production with a B+ grade and lots of praise: “Mamma Mia! has no pretenses, yet for anyone whose pulse has ever been quickened by an ABBA chord change, it leaves you dizzy, uplifted, enraptured. Feeling like a number one.” The show turned on its ABBA hits, ranging from, of course, “Mamma Mia!” and “Dancing Queen” to “Lay All Your Love on Me” and “Super Trouper.”

Nearly nine years later, the show is still doing its addictive boogie eight times a week as the fourth-longest-running show currently on the Great White Way. After revisiting it as part of our series looking at the five longest-running shows, the news on how the show itself holds up is mixed. The more than 3,000 performances have taken a toll on the disco beats. Yes, the music is still toe-tappingly delightful, but some of the casting (think more youthful!) and part of the production (better colors!) could be freshened. Ultimately, though, it’s a show that will always do it for fun lovers — who can resist middle-aged singers dancing around in ABBA-inspired disco garb? Yeah, I didn’t think so. (See my full review here.) Have any of you out there seen Mamma Mia! lately? Were you inspired to get up and sing “Dancing Queen”?

Tomorrow: I finish our series on Broadway’s longest-running shows with a revisit to the magic of Wicked.

Second Take: ‘Chicago’ on Broadway: After nearly 14 years, more razzle than dazzle

Wanda Sykes has (what should be) the last word on Dr. Laura contoversy

“[Dr. Laura] is a physiologist. You’ll make better time getting therapy from your masseuse, I mean really!” the comedian declared last night on Larry King Live. Press play below for her other brutally funny observations about the embattled former talk-show host (“She’s probably been saying the n-word for years, but this is the first time a black person was actually listening to her show!”) and Larry’s befuddled responses (“Black people don’t need psychological help?”) to her rant. 'America's Got Talent' sure loves singers

agt-arcattackLast night’s America’s Got Talent finally shook things up a tiny bit, with early favorites ArcAttack unexpectedly getting the boot. Worst! At least Prince Poppycock made the cut, as did Michael Grimm, Taylor Matthews, Anna & Patryk, and Christina & Ali. Not so lucky? Future Funk, Dan Sperry, Kristina Young, AscenDance, Antonio Restivo, and Connor Doran.

For those of you keeping score at home (all of us), of the first five finalist acts, four are singers. Four! (Anna & Patryk are ballroom dancers. Child ballroom dancers.) READ FULL STORY »

'Saturday Night Live': Will Forte reportedly leaving on amicable terms. 'Vagisil!'

will-forte-macgruberImage Credit: NBCAfter eight seasons of portraying eccentric characters like Andy the “Ohhhhhhhh, Noooooooo!” guy and totally heroic ones like MacGruber, Will Forte will not return for this fall’s 36th season of Saturday Night Live, according to the New York Times. Forte’s parting was reportedly at his own choosing and he plans to pursue other projects. [ArtsBeat]

During an interview this May prior to the release of the MacGruber feature film, Forte told EW, “I can’t imagine not being [at SNL]… It’s the longest job I’ve had. But you can’t stay forever. I love working there, though. And I love everybody that I work with. So I would not be surprised if I was back for another year. It’s such hard work, but it’s also unlike anything else, and it’s really an addiction almost.”

Can you deal with a Saturday Night Live without Forte? Who will impersonate Zell Miller?!

UPDATE: EW has confirmed that the actor will be parting ways with SNL. “After eight great seasons, Will has made the decision to move on from SNL to pursue new opportunities. He is eternally grateful to Lorne [Michaels] and all of the incredible people he worked with over the years,” Forte’s publicist said in a statement released to EW.
