Steve Carell: Do you prefer him as quirky leading man, or zany sidekick?

steve-carellImage Credit: Suzanne Hanover; Frank MasiSteve Carell may be departing The Office soon, but it seems he won’t have much trouble finding post-sitcom work. Today, Variety reported that the actor’s making plans to produce and star in A Boyfriend For My Wife, a Warner Bros. remake of a 2008 Argentine rom-com.

I never saw the original film, Un Novio Para Mi Mujer, probably because my Spanish muy sucks. And there are few details about Carell’s remake. But it’s not difficult to imagine the Office star pulling off the rom-com vehicle, since he’s come to establish himself as an affable, and mostly bankable, romantic lead with such films as The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Date Night, and Dan in Real Life. Yet, the steadfast Anchorman fan in me can’t help but yearn for the days of Carell as over-the-top supporting man, one who wielded tridents and a gift for exaggerated physical comedy. (And we’ll just pretend that whole Dinner for Schmucks thing didn’t happen.)

Are you pumped to see Carell continuing to establish himself as a go-to star for the rom-com genre? And which version of Carell do you prefer: the quirky leading man, or zany sidekick? Vote!

Where in the World is Jean-Luc Godard?

Categories: Movies, Oscars

jean-luc-godardImage Credit: Miguel Medina/AFP/Getty ImagesYesterday, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced actor Eli Wallach, British film preservationist Kevin Brownlow, and iconoclastic French New Wave director Jean-Luc Godard as recipients of Honorary Oscars to be handed out at an awards dinner this November. Last night, The Hollywood Reporter broke the news that the Academy had been unsuccessful in contacting Godard about the honor. “We’ve been attempting to reach him since 7 o’clock Tuesday evening and we have as yet had no confirmation,” Bruce Davis, the Academy’s executive director, said late on Wednesday. “We have tried by telephone, by fax, by emails to various friends and associates. We have sent a formal letter by FedEx. But we have certainly not been told he will show up at this point.”

Now EW has confirmed with the Academy that, as of this posting, Godard still has not responded. READ FULL STORY »

What will Apple unveil at their Sept. 1 event?

ipodsImage Credit: Paul Sakuma/AP ImagesSeptember’s just around the corner, which means it’s time for Apple’s annual “music” presentation, which is usually when the company unveils its upgraded iPods. What else might be getting unveiled this year?

According to All Things D, we can look forward to “a lightweight, Web-based version of the iTunes store. The new version would be designed to sync up easily with the rest of the Internet and make it much easier for customers to share their musical tastes (but not songs) with friends.” According to Reuters, it could be a revived Apple TV. Or maybe it’ll be 99-cent TV rentals.

Okay, PopWatchers, ready your wishlists. What do you want Steve Jobs to announce next week?

Is the 'Jersey Shore' bad for New Jersey? Some people sure think so.

jersey-shoreImage Credit: MTVThe cast of Jersey Shore won’t be fist pumping this news anytime soon. Residents of New Jersey and New York are up in arms over who will claim MTV’s GTL-ing bunch. Earlier this month, a Quinnipiac University poll surveyed people about the show, and 51 percent had an unfavorable opinion. Only 11 percent had a favorable opinion, and the rest of the people refused to answer or hadn’t heard enough about the show to respond.

But far more interesting are the politics surrounding the debate. (And no, I’m not talking about the continuing love affair between Snooki and John McCain.) New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie got involved last month when he blamed the Garden State’s bad reputation on several cast members who are actually from New York. (If Governors really get to talk about reality TV for work, I might consider working on a political campaign someday!) Anyway, not to be outdone, New York Gov. David Paterson blamed the environment of the Jersey Shore for the seedy reputation. Fight! Fight! Fight!

And now, thanks to the work of this new poll, we know that 35 percent of New Jersey voters agree with Gov. Christie, and 19 percent agree with Gov. Paterson. For those of you who are math impaired, like me, that leaves 46 percent who just don’t know what they think. Say what?! No opinion on the Jersey Shore? For shame! READ FULL STORY »

'Julia's Eyes': Watch the trailer for the new, Guillermo del Toro-produced horror movie

Categories: Horror, Movies

Julias-Eyes One of my favorite films of any genre is 2007′s Guillermo del Toro-produced horror movie The Orphanage, which marries chills with heart in a manner too rarely seen. Del Toro is also producing the forthcoming Julia’s Eyes, a film that seems cut from a similarly well-crafted cloth and a subtitled trailer for which just appeared online. You can see the clips for Julia’s Eyes and The Orphanage — and for another new, Del Toro-produced horror flick, Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark — after the jump.

Incidentally, if you like del Toro and you like trailers, then you’ll love the fact that the Mexican auteur recently joined the ranks of “gurus” featured on the Joe Dante-curated Trailers from Hell website. Those interested in the director’s horror roots would be well-advised to check out his recollections of sporting a fake mustache so he could get in to see Gary Sherman’s 1981 shocker Dead & Buried.

'The View' with dudes: Who would you want on the sofa?

male-viewImage Credit: Albert L. Ortega/PR Photos; Donna Ward/Getty Images; Bob Charlotte/PR Photos; Chris Hatcher/PR PhotosOprah’s time slot is still occupied — her show doesn’t end until next year — but already the competition is circling. Yesterday, it was reported by The Daily News that Barbara Walters and Bill Geddie, who created ABC’s wildly popular daytime schmoozefest The View, are working on a “unisex” spin-off series to air in Oprah’s afternoon slot once it’s vacated. Like The View, it would be a sofa-based daily talk show with five co-hosts chatting about the issues of the day. The difference would be that instead of five women, some of the co-hosts would be male.

ABC isn’t commenting, but the News reported that Walters and Geddie are thinking of Bryant Gumbel for the job, along with Filipino comedian Alec Mapa. That could work. But, frankly, we were hoping for something a little more surprising. How about an opinionated star like Robin Williams? Or Kal Penn — the former government employee would serve as a good White House correspondent, no? And then there’s always James Carville, one of the most entertaining talking heads out there (even if he makes it tough for others to get a word in edgewise). Or Tim Allen. Or Jeff Foxworthy. Or that guy from the Old Spice ads. People, the possibilities are endless.

What do you think, Popwatchers? What male personalities would you most like to spend your  afternoon viewing hours with? And would this show fare better or worse than The Other Half, NBC’s short-lived View clone for men?

Channing Tatum working on 'Ten Year' reunion: This could be one handsome cast

Channing-TatumImage Credit: Rob Kim/Retna LtdDear John star Channing Tatum is making plans for a high school reunion, just not his own. Tatum will star in Ten Year, an ensemble drama about friends reuniting 10 years after their graduation, according to the Hollywood Reporter. Tatum has been working closely with writer-director Jamie Linden (Dear John, We Are Marshall) on the project, which he will also be producing. They hope to begin shooting in November.

No other actors have deals to appear in the film, but Linden’s script is being written with some specific people in mind. Tatum’s wife, Jenna Dewan, Anna Farris, Chris Pratt, Chris Pine, and Scott Porter have all made the short list.

Now I’m not sure how I feel about the storyline (do we really need another high school reunion movie?), but I do know that’s one good looking cast. Again, no one else has been officially confirmed, but let’s just say that if these deals go through, I won’t be able to handle all the gorgeousness on one screen. My favorite on the list has to be Chris Pratt, but maybe I’m still just heartbroken over the gone but not forgotten Everwood. (Come on. You know you love and miss Bright Abbott.)

What do you think, PopWatchers? Does this project pique your interest?

Google unveils a Voice-integrated Gmail

Categories: Gadgets, Tech, Web Surfing

gmail-phoneGoogle announced its newest Gmail feature yesterday: Phone calls. Yep, the search giant has entered the ring against Skype. Cut to the woman in the bikini holding the sign that says “round one.” Ding ding. Fight!

The new feature integrates Google Voice with Gmail, so to use it, you have to have a Voice account. (Fret not. It’s free.) Install a simple plugin, and then it’s just like using chat — except you’re making phone calls. It’s free in the U.S. and Canada, and really really cheap elsewhere. (Here are some more thorough directions.) READ FULL STORY »

Kylie Minogue's 'Get Outta My Way' on 'America's Got Talent': Let's make this gem a smash single!

NBC’s summer slushfest America’s Got Talent may be about oh-so-talented Americans (like that creepy white-faced guy), but last night went to the Aussies when that delicious dancefloor queen Kylie Minogue showed up to perform as the musical guest. And, here’s the essential part for you, dear readers: Kylie didn’t just perform any old thing — she performed “Get Outta My Way,” a jam that I think has the potential to be a late-summer/early-fall smash, if it can rumble up in radio play. (I’ve had the song on repeat since her new album hit in July. Literally, it has been played more than 1,000 times on all my Apple products. I just checked.)

Anyway, I wanted to alert you all to this song’s potential, so that you’ll be too-cool and in-the-know when it finally hits radio. That is, of course, if it does. Sigh. We all know that Kylie hasn’t had a true American smash outside of the gay community since “Can’t Get You Out of My Head” in 2001. (Could the two songs’ titles similarity — “Outta” and “Out of” — help? Please? Maybe?) Give it a try here, in her first live American performance of the track:
