'Vampire Diaries' exec producers endorse Ian Somerhalder in our Sexy Beasts Bracket Game

sexy-beast-Alex-IanWith polls set to close at midnight ET in their section of EW’s Sexy Beasts Bracket Game, The Vampire Diaries‘ Damon Salvatore (Ian Somerhalder) has a commanding lead over True Blood‘s Eric Northman with 61 percent of the vote in their quarterfinal match-up. We happened to be chatting with Vampire Diaries exec producers Kevin Williamson and Julie Plec this afternoon, and gave them the update. They both (eventually) endorsed Damon and explained why Katherine (Nina Dobrev) will be a contender after the Sept. 9 season 2 premiere (“Katherine in a bra, episode 1, tune in”)…

Entertainment Weekly: Damon is beating the pants off of Eric in our Sexy Beasts Bracket Game.

Julie Plec: [Gasps] Oh, we have made it!

Kevin Williamson: What?

Plec: [Explains Sexy Beasts Bracket Game to Williamson, she voted last round] Ian is beating Eric. I love it. By the way, Eric — hot.

Williamson: Eric who? From True Blood? Ohmygod. I’m sorry, I’m voting for Eric. I love Ian, but I see him everyday. [Laughs] I don’t see Eric. I can vote for Eric, right? READ FULL STORY »

Denzel Washington's 'Unstoppable' appears to be a movie version of an SAT question

The trailer for Unstoppable, the upcoming action movie from Tony Scott and Denzel Washington, is online and all I can think is that it basically looks like a big-budget Hollywood adaptation of one of those “train leaves the station” word problems that you used to see on middle school math tests. Watch the trailer below to see what I mean: READ FULL STORY »

Wasilla mayor says Levi Johnston should 'keep his clothes on'

Verne-RuprightImage Credit: Bob Charlotte/PR Photos; Cityofwasilla.comVerne E. Rupright, the current mayor of Wasilla, Alaska, hasn’t yet decided whether he’ll run for reelection in October 2011, but he has offered advice for his potential opposition, Levi Johnston, who’s announced he’ll vie for the office for a new reality show. “Well, it is a little early to declare. Usually most wait until the year the seat is up,” Rupright says in a statement. “But since I am nearly old enough to be Levi’s grandfather I think it would be wise for him to get a high school diploma and keep his clothes on. The voters like that!” Johnston, the 20-year-old father of Sarah Palin’s grandson Tripp who’s posed for Playgirl, is currently pitching Loving Levi: The Road to the Mayor’s Office to networks. Mayor Rupright, who’s held the position since 2008, is a Vietnam vet who’s also served as a defense and personal injury attorney for most of his career.

The City of Wasilla will hold its next mayoral election on Oct. 4, 2011. (Palin held the office from 1996 to 2002.) The filing period for candidacy is July 18 through July 29, 2011. In the meantime, Johnston is said to be considering a run for Wasilla City Council, but he’ll have to mount a write-in campaign if he hopes to get on the 2010 ballot. Wasilla’s deputy city clerk confirms to EW that Johnston missed the filing period for the Oct. 5, 2010 election, which ended July 30.

Is this a show you’d watch? We’re talking about the actual show, not just the Daily Show or Colbert Report coverage of debates.

Britney Spears to appear on 'Glee': Gimme more!

britney-spearsWhether you like her or not, it’s hard to deny that Britney Spears has had an effect on pop culture, and with those everlasting memories — the ushering in of teen pop, the hit after hit, and the expert use of a boa constrictor. So, naturally, when news broke that Glee would do an all-Britney episode, similar to their all-Madonna ep, I was jumping with, well, glee.

But today, creator Ryan Murphy said on Ryan Seacrest’s radio show that not only would the kids be singing her tunes, but the pop princess herself will be appearing on the episode. It’s a veritable pop culture explosion!

Murphy assures fans that the episode will be respectful and focus on her music rather than delve into her, um, troubled years. He also reveals that though her exact role is unclear, Spears will be part of fantasy sequences.

Now the question is: If she’s going to appear in one of her own songs, which Britney era are we most looking forward to? Vote in our poll and sound off below!

'Enter the Void' trailer: Cool, confusing, or both?

Categories: Movie Trailers, Movies

The trailer for Gaspar Noé’s Enter the Void has hit the Web, and it’s a feast for the eyes and the ears (for those who like techno). In case you can’t follow it — it made perfect sense after some Googling and a repeat viewing — it’s about a small-time drug dealer, Oscar (Nathaniel Brown), who’s killed in Tokyo but won’t break the childhood pact he made with his stripper sister (Paz de la Huerta) after their parents died that he would never leave her. “His spirit wanders through the city, his visions growing evermore distorted, evermore nightmarish. Past, present and future merge in a hallucinatory maelstrom,” says the synopsis. According to reviews from 2009′s Cannes film festival, the camera is held right behind spirit Oscar’s head for the flashbacks (pictured), and for the scenes that happen after his death, it hovers above as though we’re looking through spirit Oscar’s eyes. A trip worth taking? READ FULL STORY »

Cat Deeley talks 'SYTYCD': Why she sticks up for the dancers, and who bumped his nose in her pool

SYTYCD-cat-deeleyAmerica’s (newest) favorite dancer will be crowned Thursday night. And even though we have to wait two days for our winner’s name to be revealed, So You Think You Can Dance host Cat Deeley has an early prediction: “If I was a betting woman, and I had to put some money where my mouth is, I would probably go for Kent [Boyd],” Deeley said in a conference call with reporters this afternoon. “But that’s not to do with his technical ability, it’s more to do with the reaction that I see from the screaming girls in the studio. It’s literally like Beatle-mania when he hits the stage, and hormones are just crashing everywhere and the general high-pitched screaming.” Deeley also shared her feelings about how the show’s seventh season has played out, and gave us a brief preview of the Wednesday/Thursday finales shows.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: You’ve come to the defense of several dancers this season, with regard to criticism from the judges. Did you ever plan to be so involved?
CAT DEELEY: To be honest, it was a very natural thing. I didn’t want to come on the show and [have the dancers] be like, “Hold on: Who is this English chick who’s trying to be our friend?” you know what I mean? I was trying to definitely integrate myself in there, and that is something we started doing right at the beginning. If the dancers stand outside and it’s five o’clock in the morning and the snow is coming down in New York to go and audition, then I’m there with them too. READ FULL STORY »

Meet MTV's new Twitter correspondent, Gabi Gregg

Categories: Reality TV, Twitter

Gabi-GreggImage Credit: MTV/AP ImagesMTV’s newly-minted “TJ” Gabi Gregg may be a fresh hire, but she’s already hit the ground running. The 23-year-old fashion blogger landed the primo gig Sunday night as MTV’s Twitter-based correspondent, and since then it’s been “very overwhelming — but in a good way!” she said in a phone interview she squeezed in between Tweeting, moving, and doing other press.

MTV approached Gregg a few months ago to compete in the “Follow Me” web-based contest that culminated in a televised finale on Sunday. Gregg and other social-media-savvy would-be stars proved their web prowess, but only one could snag the $100,000 and year-long gig as the behind-the-scenes correspondent for all things MTV. Gregg says she was “confused” when MTV first asked her to participate, “but after they explained what my job would be, I was super excited. And the salary didn’t hurt.” READ FULL STORY »

'Dating in the Dark' season premiere: A photo recap

If you stuck it out for two hours of ABC’s Bachelor Pad, chances are you hung around for at least 30 seconds of the season premiere of Dating in the Dark. You remember this show, right? New cast each episode; three guys and three girls feel around in the darkness and occasionally converse to see if they like each other’s “personalities”? No? That’s probably for the best. This show is a total crapfest that I’m thinking can best be recapped via pictures. Ironic, don’t you think? Because they’re in the dark.

Natasha wins this week’s prestigious Best Euphemism for “Unemployed” award. READ FULL STORY »

'Man vs. Wild' star Bear Grylls has a close encounter with...a camera?

Categories: Television

man-wildDaredevil Bear Grylls suffers the worst injury of his four-year TV career in an episode from the upcoming season of Discovery’s Man vs. Wild (starting up this Wednesday): He’s struck in the leg by a camera while glissading (that’s sliding to all you couch potatoes out there) down a mountain.

That’s right. This guy has braved scorching desserts, faced down poisonous snakes, and parachuted naked from Air Force One into a teacup balanced on a rhinoceros’ horn*, but it was a member of his own crew who nearly did him in. As told by Bear to a group of reporters in NYC this morning, it all went down like this: Bear’s trusty cameraman was momentarily blinded by snow while sliding down a snowy incline beside him; the camera smashed into Bear’s leg, and everyone had to be evacuated to the nearest hospital by a helicopter. Don’t worry, they’re all fine now.

Also to come on this season: A special “Fan vs. Wild” episode, in which Bear takes two lucky fans with him to the Canadian Rockies. (The ep will air in September.) And by “lucky,” we mean “crazy enough to think tagging along with Bear Grylls while he tackles the elements in a freezing wasteland will be fun.” Hats off to you guys. We’re happy to watch from the couch, thank you very much.

*We made that one up. But only because this little incident was a bit too graphic to mention.
