'Expendables' adds to canon of great action movie dialogue

Jason-StathamImage Credit: Karen BallardIf you’ve gone to see The Expendables, chances are you went for Sylvester Stallone’s flair for escapist violence (you know you cheered) and classic action movie dialogue (you know you laughed). I’d say Jason Statham’s “Next time I’ll deflate all your balls” — uttered after he took his knife to a basketball held by the man who abused his character’s ex-girlfriend — is the line that got the best response in my screening (after Stallone’s quip about Schwarzenegger’s character wanting to be president). What was your favorite quip from The Expendables? And what quotes make your list of all-time greatest non-catchphrase action movie dialogue?*

* What I call “greatest,” you may think of as “awesomely bad.”

Lunchtime Poll: Peggy spying on Don in 'Mad Men'

Peggy Olson spying on Don Draper through the glass partition was my favorite moment of last night’s Mad Men and quite possibly the greatest hidden gem of the series so far. I found it so inspiring that I’m doing the same thing to Ausiello right now, and our offices don’t even have glass sections below the ceiling! All you really need is a power drill and one good eye.

'Next Food Network Star' season finale recap: And the winner is...

next-food-network-starImage Credit: Food NetworkIt was a feel-good season finale of The Next Food Network Star, and not just because the right person took home the crown. While the contestants of the show’s sixth season were often spottier than a herd of Appaloosas, last night found the final three — Herb, Aarti, and Tom — delivering solid pilots under the watchful eye of Rachael Ray. Just as encouraging: READ FULL STORY »

'Love & Other Drugs' trailer: See Jake Gyllenhaal and Anne Hathaway get it on!

Brokeback Mountain co-stars Jake Gyllenhaal and Anne Hathaway are reunited in Love & Other Drugs (due to release in November), and as far as I can tell from this new trailer, it’s going to be the first romantic comedy to deal with pharmaceutical sales — not something that would immediately scream out for the big-screen treatment (Viagra doesn’t strike me as inherently romantic). But Gyllenhaal and Hathaway are so likable (and apparently in various states of undress for much of the film) that it looks cute and fun. Watch the full trailer below… READ FULL STORY »

James Cameron talks 'Avatar' sequel, the evolution of 3D, and respect for his geeks

james-cameronImage Credit: Michael Tullberg/Getty ImagesUsually a couple of decades need to pass before a classic motion picture gets brought back to the big screen for a major rerelease. So leave it to Avatar — the film that’s broken all the records — to pull it off in just eight months. On Aug. 27, the movie that’s already grossed nearly $3 billion worldwide will be returning to about a thousand 3-D screens across the country, with nine additional minutes of footage. EW sat down with James Cameron to ask him how things are going on the sequel, what he thinks about the post-Pandora explosion of 3D in Hollywood, and how he really felt about losing to his ex-wife at the Oscars earlier this year.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: So what’s in the extra nine minutes?
JAMES CAMERON:
Cool stuff. All cool stuff. There’s a big rousing sequence where they’re hunting these herd animals called sturmbeests. There’s another new creature that you haven’t seen before called the stingbat. There’s a really powerful emotional scene toward the end of the film where the leader of the Na’vi is dying after a battle. There’s a bit more in the love scene with Jake and Neytiri. There’s more bioluminescent stuff in the night forest. Little bits and pieces here and there. READ FULL STORY »

Fishy Business: The behind-the-scenes story of the 'Piranha' movies (Part I)

piranha-1-posterImage Credit: Mary Evans/New World Pictures/Ronald Grant/EverettDo you enjoy complex plotting? Subtle subtexts? Movies in which scantily clad people don’t get bitten to pieces by fish? Then you should think twice—actually, make it thrice—before seeing Piranha 3D, which opens this Friday.

Directed by French horror auteur Alexandre Aja (Mirrors, 2006′s The Hills Have Eyes remake) the film’s cast features both an Academy Award winner in Richard Dreyfuss, who cameos as his Matt Hooper character from Jaws in all but name, and an Oscar nominee in Elisabeth Shue, who plays the movie’s sheriff-heroine. But this Arizona-shot tale of prehistoric piranhas feasting upon Spring Break partiers after being freed from their underwater lair by an earthquake, is about as far from Oscar catnip as it is possible to get. “From what I understand, it’s the goriest movie in history,” says cast member Adam Scott, from Parks and Recreation and Party Down. “When we were making it in Lake Havasu, there was a tanker truck filled with blood parked on the side of the lake pumping blood all day. I’m not joking. I don’t think anyone’s got us on the tanker truck of blood. I think we’re unique in that regard.”

George Lucas reveals never-before-seen original opening to 'Return of the Jedi' at 'Star Wars' fan event

Filed under: Movies and tagged: , , ,

At the Star Wars Celebration V in Orlando, Florida this past weekend, George Lucas and friends (including Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher) introduced a never-before-seen deleted scene from Return of the Jedi, the third installment in the original trilogy. (You can watch the scene — or at least a portion of it — below.) Apparently, Luke Skywalker originally had a different introduction in the film. Instead of waiting to bring the young, mechanically-handy jedi into the story after Princess Leia’s failed attempt to rescue Han Solo from Jabba’s palace, Lucas and his collaborators conceived a scene in which Luke, his face partially obscured by his dark hoody-cloak, finished work on his new lightsaber and placed it inside R2-D2′s domed head, setting up some plot points for later in the movie. What struck me most were the moments preceding the Luke stuff, in which Darth Vader retires to his meditation chamber and tries to psychically summon his son. “Luke, join me on the dark side of The Force. It is the only way. Luuuuuuuke… Luuuuuuuuke…” Kinda corny in retrospect, but at the same time, the whole sequence would have made for an ominous and creepy opening sequence — one at odds with the relatively light adventure that follows, which could be one reason why they cut it. The deleted scene will be available on the Return of the Jedi Blu-ray disc, which will be released next year as part of the Blu-ray release of the entire franchise.

Whitney Cummings roasts David Hasselhoff: Watch a very NSFW clip here

hoff-roastImage Credit: Frank Micelotta/Comedy CentralDid you catch Comedy Central’s Roast of David Hasselhoff last night? Pals like Pam Anderson, Hulk Hogan, and Jerry Springer joined roastmaster Seth MacFarlane and Comedy Central regulars like Lisa Lampanelli, Jeff Ross, and Greg Giraldo in mercilessly mocking the Hoff. The man’s career has provided ample material for an event like this, and nearly all the participants “went there” with regard to that notorious hamburger-on-the-floor video from a few years back.

One performance that everyone’s talking about today came from Whitney Cummings. You can check out a short clip from her contribution to the roast after the jump, but be warned, it’s very NSFW — extreme profanity, racial and sexual name-calling, you name it. (Seriously, don’t watch this clip without headphones.)

Who was your favorite roaster last night? Did you think any of the comedians went too far with their jokes about Hasselhoff’s drinking, or is going too far the whole point of a roast anyway? Sound off in the comments.

'Big Brother' instant react: All Brendon wanted to be was happy and in love!

big-brother-castImage Credit: Cliff Lipson/CBSI’ve yet to understand what makes a knucklehead like Brendon tick and unfortunately, tonight’s episode didn’t make it any more clear for me. (SPOILER ALERT: Don’t read on if you haven’t watched tonight’s episode). Though I was tickled to see him triumph over that exhaustive rope maze – because let’s be honest, it’s far more interesting when the house is turned on its head after each eviction and the bad guy becomes HOH – I had no idea why he zeroed in Lane and Ragan for eviction rather than the lippy Britney. Clearly, she managed to convince Brendon that she had his back going into the veto ceremony and next week’s nominations, though there’s not a chance in hell that little minx will keep her word. And why go after the relatively harmless Lane, who doesn’t even realize that the cereal in Raisin Bran is the freaking bran? My only thought was that Brendon’s real target was Matt, and the best way to oust the house’s cockiest tool is to backdoor him on Wednesday. READ FULL STORY »

'The Great Food Truck Race': Tyler Florence talks about Food Network's new reality competition

The-Great-Food-Truck-RaceBetween Hell’s Kitchen, Masterchef, The Next Food Network Star, Top Chef, and 24 Hour Restaurant Battle, it’s been quite the busy summer for reality food competitions. But just when you thought TV’s proverbial stove top was getting overcrowded, along comes The Great Food Truck Race, a delicious reality concoction sure to simmer in the late summer heat. Sort of a cross between Cannonball Run and Top Chef, The Great Food Truck Race follows seven gourmet food trucks—which serve everything from burgers to crepes, banana pudding to frog legs—in a cross country road trip from Los Angeles to New York, during which the restaurants-on-wheels must test their cooking skills and business savvy to outsell their competitors. Pretty innovative, right? Food Network staple Tyler Florence, who serves as “the host and the axe man” on the surprisingly exhilarating program, talked to EW about his new hosting gig and what kind of ride we should expect from The Great Food Truck Race, which premieres tonight at 10PM on Food Network.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: How did you get involved with this show?
TYLER FLORENCE: You know what, when new Food Network show ideas pop up, I usually get a phone call to see if the idea is kind of great for the mix, if it’s a good time for everybody, and this felt like a great show at the right time—just because it’s so important to a lot of people right now in the country [given the economy], and a lot of chefs are doing amazing things at a mobile level.
