Excess Hollywood: Ben Stiller teams with Brett Ratner and Brian Grazer for heist flick

excess-hollywood

  • EW confirms Ben Stiller will partner with Brett Ratner and Brian Grazer for Tower Heist, which follows a broke building manager who plans to steel back his pension, which was lost in a Bernie Madoff-style scheme.
  • Doug Liman is set to direct All You Need is Kill, a time-traveling film about a soldier who comes back to life via time loop after being killed by aliens. Damn you, Ben Linus! That wheel screwed over a lot of people. [Variety]
  • In appropriate-title news: Mercy‘s Taylor Schilling has been tapped to star alongside Zac Efron in The Lucky One. [THR]
  • David Lynch is serving as Guest Artistic Director for the AFI Fest. [Variety]

ABC’s official Lost auction ended this weekend, but, let’s face it, you’re still disappointed you didn’t pick up a Dharma van of your own. But good news! You can still order collector’s prints of the cast, like the one pictured above, to be featured exclusively in this week’s print issue of EW. “Soul Survivors,” ABC’s final limited-edition collector’s print, is available for $69.99 at officiallostphotos.com. Each print is a 10 x 37 high-end custom print on photo paper, numbered with a certificate of authenticity included. Now if you’ll excuse me, I have to go kick myself because I missed the chance to bid on Hurley’s winning Mega Jackpot ticket and consequently have my life ruined.

'Melissa and Joey': EW chats with stars Melissa Joan Hart and Joey Lawrence

melissa-joeyImage Credit: Eric McCandless/ABC FamilyLast Tuesday night, ABC Family’s cheesy, throwback-y new sitcom Melissa & Joey became the network’s biggest series debut in Adults 18-49, with 1.3 million in that age range tuning in to the decidedly nostalgic vibe of the show. The total viewership — a whopping 2.2 million viewers! — wasn’t shabby either, besting the viewership of shows across the cable and broadcast network spectrum. We’ll see how those numbers hold up — will people come back? — after tonight’s episode. In the meantime, EW got the chance to sit down with the show’s two stars, Melissa Joan Hart (hi, Clarissa…or Sabrina!) and Joey Lawrence (hi, Joey…or Joey!), to chat about how the show came together, what it’s all about, all that nostalgia, and which of their former sitcoms they’d reboot today if they had the choice.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: How’d it come together for you guys to do this show?
MELISSA JOAN HART:
The first time we got to work together was [the ABC Family original movie] My Fake Fiancé. Both of us just work together really well and from there we knew we wanted to spin-off and do something in television, and ABC Family agreed. We all came together and ABC Family had the concept, we had characters we wanted to play.

So, wait, whose idea was it?
MELISSA:
Well, ABC Family had the same idea, basically. They were working on it from their end and we were like “oh, we should do this.” They had the concept — we had the idea to keep going together.
JOEY:
They asked if we would be interested in continuing the dynamic of the characters that we able to tap into in the movie. We were open to it and then the discussion grew into larger talks and more talks and we talked to the writers and now here we are.

Joss Whedon confirms that 'Avengers' will only have one superheroine

Iron-Scarlett-JohanssonImage Credit: Francois DuhamelSorry, Scarlet Witch fans: Avengers director Joss Whedon was recently quoted in Australia’s Sunday Herald Sun (via Moviehole) saying, somewhat definitively, that the upcoming mega-spinoff will be the bro-iest movie about a bunch of dudes duding it up since Ocean’s 11-13. “It is true that the movie is only going to have one female Avenger,” says Whedon, although he hedges that “she will not be the only female character.” That could mean that we’ll see a female supervillain…but if I were a betting man, I’d wager that it’s more likely that we’ll see an appearance by one or more of the main superheros’ love interests, like Gwyneth Paltrow’s Pepper Potts or Natalie Portman’s Thor-loving Jane Foster. Now, as excited as I am by the prospect of a scene featuring the Super-Galpals sitting around at their favorite trendy cafe talking about the respective bedroom merits of super-strength vs. super-intelligence, it’s just a squeensy bit depressing to find out that the Buffy auteur couldn’t figure out a way for Avengers to pass the Bechdel Test. What would it take for you to 'cut the cord' on cable?

Categories: Tech, Television

no-more-cableImage Credit: Twins/GettyPay cable just finished its worst quarter ever, according to a new report: Around 711,000 cable subscribers canceled their services in the last few months. But don’t chalk it up to “cord-cutting” — replacing cable with Internet programming options — just yet. It’s the economy, stupid. Well, that and the end of those sweet short-term contracts that cropped up with last year’s digital transition. (At least, that’s what the report says.) READ FULL STORY »

Lunchtime Poll: Who in this trailer makes you want to see 'Going the Distance'?

If, for whatever reason, Charlie Day doesn’t become the Hollywood superstar he so deserves to be, he could easily get a job in advertising. Because, boy, can the It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia star sell me anything. Kitton Mittons (Why does FX only offer shirts, and not Kitton Mittons themselves?!), a script about a crime-fighting dog played by Dolph Lundgren, and, now, his upcoming movie Going the Distance. (So, I suppose, Vulture, my answer is, yes.)

In the most recent trailer for the film, which is jetting to theaters Sept. 2, Day gets more screen time…as does the rest of the film’s cast. In fact, mere shots of Rob Riggle, Christina Applegate, Jim Gaffigan, Jason Sudeikis, and Mike Birbiglia in the trailer make me realize how much I’m more pumped about Distance‘s supporting cast than its stars. (Especially since Day reportedly steals the movie from its more famous headliners.) And that’s even considering the undeniable cuteness of Drew Barrymore-Justin Long. And the fact that Sudeikis’ mustache might make me momentarily think I stepped into a screening of Twilight.

So, as you sit eating your hot pockets and cans of cat food, tell us: Who are you most excited to see in Distance? Watch the trailer after the jump, then vote in our poll! READ FULL STORY »

'The Hurt Locker' as a reality TV show: People, 'The Running Man' is coming true!

hurt_lockerLest you still harbor any doubts that we are living in a Philip K. Dick-esque dystopia: According to The Hollywood Reporter, G4 has ordered a new reality show called Bomb Patrol: Afghanistan, which will follow an Explosive Ordnance Disposal unit in Afghanistan. This same territory was covered in last year’s The Hurt Locker, although Bomb Patrol will presumably not include an existential inquisition into the addictive emptiness of modern warfare. It’s foolish to judge anything this early (Bomb Patrol is set to air next spring), but it’s hard for me to picture how a show about soldiers engaged in a life-or-death activity — in the midst of a highly controversial conflict — will manage to not be incredible offensive to every single human being who has ever lived. Fantasia talks to ABC about attempted suicide: 'I just wanted out'

Fantasia Barrino appeared on ABC’s Good Morning America today for her first interview following her Aug. 9 suicide attempt, when she overdosed on aspirin and sleeping aids. The American Idol winner bears all in the interview, confessing that “was tired of people doing [her] wrong constantly,” referring to the barrage of negative press recently thrown at her personal and professional lives.

In the interview, a tearful Barrino admits that she suffers from trust issues and loneliness, and goes on to discuss the toll the alleged affair she had with Antwaun Cook — a married North Carolina man — had on her. Check out the interview: READ FULL STORY »

Miss Universe 2010: 10 ridiculous opening gasps

miss-universe-mexicoImage Credit: Miss Universe OrganizationCongratulations to Mexico’s Jimena Navarrete, the winner of Miss Universe 2010, and to host Natalie Morales for speaking to her in Spanish! Isn’t she lovely? Now get thee to the after-party! Other host Bret Michaels: “I’m glad they’re taping this, because I’m not going to remember any of it.” Olé.

It’s important, though, to recognize the night’s complete range of talents. The introductions featured 83 contestants and then…poof! Within moments, only 15 were left. So if you were a smart cookie (who is never allowed to eat a cookie), you knew that a sultry open-mouth gasp was the best way to make your mark and appear on EW.com’s PopWatch the next day. Below, a tribute to the fallen heroes, in ascending order of ridiculousness.

Italy will cut you. READ FULL STORY »
