'I Love You Phillip Morris' finally gets a release date. Curse be gone!

I-Love-You-Phillip-MorrisImage Credit: Patti PerretThose of you dying to see Jim Carrey’s gay sex scene in theaters will finally get your wish Dec. 3. I Love You Phillip Morris, which tells the story of a con artist (Carrey) who falls in love with his cellmate (Ewan McGregor), hasn’t had an easy time breaking whatever hoodoo curse was responsible for its numerous delays. But now that it has found a U.S. distributor (Roadside Attractions, the company that released The Cove and The September Issue), will it be worth the wait, PopWatchers? Or has all this drama made you impatient (a.k.a. I found it on my own; thanks for nothing)? Curious minds can check out the trailer below — in case you haven’t had a chance to see it in the past seven months.

Finally. I’m so excited. Although…I have to wait till December?

  • Ceballos

    This is great news!

I always thought it looked like an interesting project and, since it’s now coming out in December, chances are that it could be up for some awards if it’s any good.

I still sorta wish Jim Carrey wasn’t wearing Nicolas Cage’s hair.

thats what i thought. december? someones getting up to bat at awards season… poor jim though, couldve been nominated 3 times already- you think thisll be it?

      • Ceballos

Well, if this thing is ANY good, he’s a lock for a Golden Globe nom, at least. (The HFPA apparently loves the guy.)

It’s hard to say about the Oscars. They’re obviously not above throwing someone a “make-up” nod (I’m assuming the three times you’re referring to are “Man on the Moon”, “Eternal Sunshine” and “Truman Show”).

I think the most important thing is who he’d be competing against, and I’m not really up to date on which movies/actors he’d be up against later this year.

Semi off topic, but did anyone ever see a tv movie from around the late 80’s/early 90’s called “Doing Time on Maple Drive”? Aside from “Once Bitten”, it was the first thing I remember seeing him in – he played the screw-up alcoholic brother of the main character in the movie and was so good. He really is a great actor when he’s not chewing up the scenery in terrible movies.

@Nicole: Yes I remember “doing time on Maple Drive’. It aired just before ‘In Living Color’ started, so I was ‘didn’t I see the white guy in a drama?’ I think Carrey played an alcohlic.

That fact that Jim Carrey hasn’t been nominated for an Oscar is almost as ridiculous as the fact that Gary Oldman hasn’t.

finally!been waiting for so long for this interesting movie to come out!!

I will admit; I got frustrated with what seemed like prudish North American companies afraid to release a gay film with mainstream actors in the lead roles. I found it on my own, through nefarious methods (*dramatically twists end of handlebar mustache*). I will say that I did really enjoy the movie, and that I COULD NOT BELIEVE all of the controversy over the sexual scenes, which were, in my opinion, very tame (I mean, they were nothing more shocking than you’d see in an r-rated hetero scene, perhaps less so. And from what I hear, those may even be further edited for NA audiences…don’t know if this is still the case). Both Carrey and MacGregor were great – definitely go see it when it comes out!

Looks good, will this finally bring Jim Carrey a long overdue Oscar nomination after “The Truman Show” and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind”?

  • Jo

Wow how come it took so long? It’s already out on DVD in Sweden and we’re usually far behind with moviereleases…

  • Jessica

I saw this on an Air France flight. Really good. Not sure what all the fuss was about.

  • Marcus

This looks so good! Hard to believe this couldn’t get a distributor. Considering it was never going to be a wide release in the first place, I don’t know what they were afraid of. Gay audiences will for sure come at the least.

So it’s NOT about cigarettes then?

  • yepyep

I saw the movie, if I were in the Oscars I would def give a nod, I saw it not knowing what I was walking into, I was surprised to how far they both went into the characters. Ewan McGregor played his part great also. I have to admit I felt a little uncomfortable in some parts, but they did it well so at the end I give the film a B+.

  • Mike

Yeah, I may or may not have also found this movie on the internet and may or may not have watched it because all of the buzz peaked my interest. All I can say is that what I may or may not have seen was amazing and that Jim and Ewan both deserve Oscar noms for their performances! I will definitely go see this when it comes to the theater :)

  • bootsycolumbia

IMHO, Jim Carrey should have won the Oscar for Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, and he should have been nominated for Truman Show and Man in the Moon. So if this movie is even half as good as the trailer is, he should be a lock for a nomination at Oscar time. Can’t wait for December!

  • Chris Price

    This movie is GREAT.

  • jake

It’s still cursed, that’s the worst weekend of all movie weekends to open a movie the week after thanksgiving.

  • PNK

    CAN.
    NOT.
    WAIT.
Luv me some Jim Carrey BABY!!
