Contest to play Spider-Man's love interest narrowing

According to The Hollywood Reporter‘s Heat Vision blog, director Marc Webb and Garfield are now meeting with actresses in search of Spidey’s love-interest. At least five actresses are currently in the mix — (clockwise, from lower right) Ophelia Lovibond (Nowhere Boy, pictured in green shirt), Imogen Poots (Solitary Man), Mary Elizabeth Winstead (Scott Pilgrim vs. the World — THR says Winstead was an initial candidate who has fallen out of contention), Emma Roberts (Nancy Drew),  Lily Collins (The Blind Side), and Teresa Palmer (The Sorcerer’s Apprentice). What’s more, it’s not exactly clear which comic-book character they might be playing. They could be testing for Mary Jane Watson, Gwen Stacy, or perhaps even Parker’s first love, Betty Brant.

My vote goes to another Brit, The Blind Side‘s Collins, but who do you think would look best on Garfield’s arm?

    Who ARE these people?

    • Snsetblaze

I don’t know these actresses either, other than Emma Roberts because of her relations.
My bet is she gets the role.

    • Quirky

These are people that are cheap enough that Sony can spend all of its money on CGI and 3D technology instead of actors.

  • ZurichHottie

Only one of these actors is American. Trust me when I say I am not that American, but perhaps it will catch on that 2 Brits are playing American roles in an American comic series. Progressive? Insulting? Who cars? I’m kinda in between.

    • Michael

      2 are American.

  • dirk

isnt it too soon for remake of Spider-man? Bring back Toby and Kristen……

    • klw

I say its too soon for a Fantastic Four remake yet they are gonna do it anyway the same goes for X-Men.

Is anybody really invested in this franchise reboot? I mean, didn’t we see the creation story only 7 years ago. And the first two Spidey movies were pretty damn good; what do they think they are going to do better? Why are they regressing with this crap? Have not we learned anything from Inception?

    • Adam

I don’t like this trend of rebooting franchises that are only a few years old either. They’re doing the same thing now with “X-Men.” What next, a reboot of the “Harry Potter” series after the final one finishes its run in theaters next year? It’s one thing to wait a couple decades, like with “Superman” or “Batman,” where you have big improvements in special effects and can introduce a whole new generation to the franchise. But re-casting all the the characters and resetting all the various elements every few years is confusing and pointless!

      • cam

That would be HILARIOUS if hollywood does a “new vision and take on the Harry Potter novels” the year after the final one. haha.. I could totally see them doing that tho.

but yeah, I agree. kinda pointless to redo an orgin story when everyone already knows and loves the orgin and the first movie. Any of those girls would be an improvment over kristen dunst however.

      • Steve P

They are not rebooting the X-Men franchise, but doing an origin story–besides, it was evident that they were only going to do 3 X-Men movies with the previous cast with the exception of Hugh Jackman. If you’ve ever read the X-men comics, you’d know how many times over the past 50 years the team has been reset and changed, I just hope the screenwriters do it justice…

      • The Truth

They need to stop all reboots regardless of age. For every Batman Begtins there’s at least 10 aweful reboots. Two great movies and one ok one and their ready to scrap the franchise and start over? I would pay to see a Spiderman 4, I will not pay to see a rebooted Spiderman.

  • Josie

The second I saw Imogen Poots years ago I knew she could be awesome, so my vote goes to her.

  • Shawn

Maybe I have no artistic vision, but from these pictures, I’m having a hard time picturing any of these girls as a convincing Mary Jane, so hopefully the film makers are going with a Gwen Stacy story line.

  • Christian

Another site said it’s definitely not Mary Jane Watson they’re casting for. I’d bet dollars to donuts (especially after looking at the actresses rumored) that they’re casting Black Cat.

  • Chichi

Ophelia Lovibond has to be cast as the love interest. All those other girls look way too young. And since the guy playing Spidey looks at least 35 on a good day, any of the other choices would make him look like a pedo.

    • mary q contrary

wha?? He so doesn’t look old at all. The guy has a very youthful vibe about him. Toby Maguire looked WAY older than Garfield when he first took on Peter Parker, and I’m not even gonna go into how much the character had aged by the third movie.

      • Tom

He definitely doesn’t look like a teenager. He’ll be pushing 30 when the film comes out. If they wanted to reboot with a teenage story, they should have cast either a real teenager or someone who is at the most in their early 20s. This reboot is going to suck ass.

      • Sam

yeah, I agree with you, Tom. I thought the point of it was to show a younger Peter Parker, so why hire someone who is in his late 20s… it kind of defeats the purpose.

      • Adam

Not only is the age issue a question (and this will only get worse if they stick with him for sequels as the years pass), another problem is that the guy could pass as one of those “Twilight” vampires, and Peter Parker is supposed to be an average-looking, nerdy guy who women tend to ignore.

Lily Collins is not British, FYI. Doesn’t matter where her daddy comes from, she’s an L.A. kid through and through.

    • jill collins

Lily was born in the UK and lived there for for the first six years of her life so technically she is British. I should know… I am her mom. LOL!!!

  • Tye-Grr

Mary Elizabeth Winstead has my vote, but it seems that she’s out of contention.

    • Liz

Mary has my vote as well. She’s the most beautiful of the lot and she’s also got great screen presence. I also like Teresa Palmer.

  • lover

    Betty White

  • CML

If they were casting for Mary Jane, my vote goes to Emma Stone. She’s got the look, is young and seems to be on the rise after Zombieland.

    • Bruno

Thank you, or Deborah Ann Woll from True Blood.

    • ally

      yes, definitely emma stone!

  • drew

Is it so impossible to find an American actress to play an American part. I’m already annoyed that an iconic American part was given to someone British (I know, he was born in America but thats splitting hairs). There are good American actors, plenty in fact. They just must have crappy agents. And if you think I’m being a little too sore on the subject think of it this way…..would anyone in Great Britain warm up to the idea of an American playing James Bond? Of course not, they barely tolerated a blond Bond.

  • victoria

ewwwww anyone but emma roberts. she’s such a terrible actress

    • dee

haha i was thinking the same thing. she’s so wrong. anyone but her..

  • John

I would love to see Emilie de Ravin (from Lost & Remember Me) playing this role!!!
