'Apocalypse Now' Blu-ray trailer (EW Exclusive)

Thirty-one years ago this week, Francis Ford Coppola’s Vietnam War masterpiece, Apocalypse Now, hit theaters. Over the decades, the pricey 1979 epic, which was nominated for eight Academy Awards and stars Marlon Brando, Martin Sheen, Dennis Hopper, and Robert “I love the smell of Napalm in the morning” Duvall, has become downright infamous thanks to colorfully crazy stories about its runaway bizarro production, Brando’s on-set eccentricities, and Coppola’s own heart-of-darkness journey to get it made before he flipped out.

To help celebrate the celluloid milestone, EW has gotten its hands on an exclusive trailer for the upcoming Special Edition Blu-ray of the film, which comes out on Oct. 19. The multi-disc set (there’s a two-disc and a three-disc version) will have nine hours of special features, including never-before-seen interviews with the filmmakers and audition footage, plus both the original version of the film and the restored Apocalypse Now Redux. And for DVD nerds who care about things like technical specs, it will be the first time the film is released in its original 2.35:1 aspect ratio.

Stuff like this reminds me that I really need to stop messing around and get a Blu-ray player.

I have the frickin’ Apocalypse Now laserdisc special edition and 2 versions on DVD. I just can’t do it anymore. If I started collected Blu Ray, you just know the following week they’d come out with Apocalypse Now on the Cranial Chip.

That’s my biggest hesitation about getting a Blu-ray: all the cool new editions of movies I already own on DVD.

I feel like I’d just rely on the Blu-ray player’s upconversion abilities for a while because I’d be too timid to take the plunge with Blu-ray discs. Also, mixing in Blu-rays with my existing DVD collection doesn’t appeal to me on an aesthetic level.

(In case you didn’t know, I’m a GIGANTIC nerd.)

Not nerdy at all. That sounds completely reasonable to me. My spouse is afraid to touch anything in my DVD collection because they are carefully organized by director for the major filmmakers such as Cameron and Spielberg, and then remaining discs are organized into genres and even into subgenres (for instance, on the animated shelf Pixar films are all grouped together – sorted by year of course) or sometimes by actor if the actor has a strong body of work. There are exceptions of course such as Best Picture winners get their own shelf instead of being placed into their respective genres, and even exceptions exist there for parts of a series such as Return of the King which goes with the LOTR box set on the top shelf. All totally reasonable, I’m sure you’d agree.

My understanding is that the 3-disc edition will also have the ‘Hearts of Darkness’ documentary. A definite buy for me.

This has always been one of my favorite films of all time.

    What’s Blu-Ray ?

    • TV/Movie Fan

Blu-ray.com and Wikipedia explains it better, however, Blu-ray is a disc like DVD that is read with a blue light and hooked up to an HDTV with HDMI video cables, looks Exactly like a theaterical release film, execpt for IMAX/IWERKS and real 3D movies such as Avatar and Colarine.

I honestly might just buy a Blu-ray player so I can watch this.

Great to see Marlon Brando on a blue ray disc version, but my question is when is On the Waterfront coming out o blu ray?

  • Sean

Fellas, the difference between blu ray on a solid 1080p tv and a regular dvd is phenomenal. For example, when watching Blade Runner on Blu Ray, you’ll notice and hear all sorts of little details that you hadn’t noticed before. The clarity is that good!

So, it is wise to reinvest $25 for your favorite movies on Blu Ray. Perhaps you might spend a grand replenishing your Favorite Movie collection. The benefit is that you get to see your movies all over again with detail reminiscent of the film’s original release.
