Lunchtime Poll: Would you be caught dead singing Marc Anthony's 'I Need to Know' in 2010?

In an effort to post as many items related to the year 1999 as possible, I’ve decided today’s Lunchtime Poll should be about Marc Anthony.

Mandi came by as I was writing last night’s news brief that Anthony will guest-star as a love interest for Jada Pinkett Smith on TNT’s HawthoRNe, and we both immediately — without even agreeing to do this — launched into a snap ‘n’ sway singalong of Anthony’s 1999 single “I Need to Know.” We sang the first half of the chorus just fine, but after “Tell me baby girl, cause I need to know/I need to know…I need to know,” our once-hearty vocals softened to a gibberish mumbling, sort of an open-mouthed hum. We thought there were other lyrics to the chorus that we had forgotten. But no! The second half of the chorus for “I Need to Know” is exactly the same as the first half. We’re such idiots! That’s the last time we’ll overestimate Marc Anthony’s lyricism, promise. We’ve made a huge mistake. Still, any impromptu dance party is VERY worthwhile.

Now there’s something I need to know. Tell me, PopWatch-reading guuuurrrrl, ’cause I need to know. I need to know. I need to know. God, it just never ends.

Only to annoy my girlfriend. (She especially hates when I play up the Spanish accent on “…there’s even talk about you WAN-TEEING me”

Also, “She Sang to Me”…underrated. (There, I said it.)

That’s hilarious. My roommate did the same thing!

  • Jen

Well, now thanks to this post it’s stuck in my head!!!

So, yeah, I’ll probably be caught dead singing it for the next three days or so.

Yup, stuck in my head now too. Thanks Annie!

My Zumba instructor sometimes plays “I Need to Know” in class and I find myself mouthing along to the song against my will! LOL

  • ruth

that song is one of my guiltiest of pleasures

My musical growth is largely stunted, rooted in the early/mid-90′s and I make NO apologies for it – however, ’99 was not great. And “Need to Know” was just sort of holding hands and sliding downhill with the rest of the garbage that was cranked out that year.
But sure, I’d belt out skeletor’s ballads at karaoke, why not?
…Right after I finish my next set: “Bills, Bills, Bills”…

LOVE this song. And for some reason I sing it off-key – just like I talking the words – driving everyone around me crazy.

I had no clue what song you were talking about until I played the video and realized that I only know this song in Spanish… (I was only listening to music in Spanish back then) but it’s still a bit of a guilty pleasure. “La gente anda diciendo por ahí, que tu quieres acercarte a mí…..Ay Dímelo, dímelo, porque por tu amor, estoy muriendo yo…….”

  • Karen

LOVE IT! This song takes me back to my senior year of high school! I was just singing it when it came on the radio a couple of weeks ago, and yes…I know all the lyrics! LOL!!!

    This song doesn’t seem karaoke-worthy; now JJ FAD’s “Supersonic” – I LIKE!

  • Ayn

    No.

  • Lucille 3

Yes, Annie, like GOB you made a huge mistake.

  • Laura

This song makes me want to dance — I do a little salsa and sing along. Is it God’s gift to songwriting? No. But does it make me smile? Absolutely.
