'Inception' star Cillian Murphy lands another sci-fi role, opposite Justin Timberlake and Amanda Seyfried

cillian-murphyImage Credit: David Gabber/Photorazzi/PR PhotosInception star Cillian Murphy seems to know where his acting sweet spot lies — in science fiction movies. The actor, who played Robert Fischer, the son of Saito’s terminal corporate rival, in Christopher Nolan’s sci-fi actioner, is about to sign on to another futuristic, possibly mind-bending movie, I’m.mortal, opposite Amanda Seyfried and Justin Timberlake, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

Just like Inception, this one sounds like a creepy-weird doozy: The story is set in a near-future where scientists have finally figured out how to stop aging. But alas! Now the planet is dealing with overpopulation. To combat that, money isn’t currency anymore — time is, and people use it to pay for creature comforts and shorten their life. The rich prosper, while everyone else battles it out for personal immortality. Murphy will play an officer for the Timekeepers organization, while Timberlake (who’s still negotiating) is a poor man who suddenly becomes rich and snatches an heiress (Seyfried) while on the run from a murder investigation.

The officer character — described as “precise as the time he keeps” — sounds like yet another small but pivotal role for Murphy. It could be another smart move for the actor, who’s sort of a master at non-leading, but essential roles, as we also saw with his villain parts in Batman Begins and Red Eye. Does this role sound perfect for Murphy, especially considering his involvement with Inception? Will you go see I’m.mortal for Murphy — and/or the Timberlake/Seyfried combo?

I thought Murphy was pretty great in “Inception”, and I was pleasantly surprised by the amount of emotion he brought to the film’s final act.

In a semi-related story, they have GOT to reconsider that “I’m.mortal” title. Groan.

    • Katja

Haven’t yet seen Inception, but I totally agree about the “I’m.mortal” title.

      • Madd

        A. Katja, you should see it.
        B. Yeah, Ceballos, he was great in Inception.
        C. I want to look forward to this, but I keep thinking it’s going to be like that Michael Bay thing with Ewan McGregor (sp)- the fact that I can’t remember the title probably isn’t a good sign.
        D. Yes, that’s the worst title since “Cougar Town”.

      What Ceballos said.

Also, Cillian Murphy’s face is utterly fascinating. I mean that in the best possible sense. That’s one of the things I really loved about the cast of Inception. They all have these not-conventionally-perfect-but-terribly-interesting faces, and the skill to use them like weapons on the screen. And Nolan’s directing totally took advantage of that. Guh. Loved it.

But, yeah. I’m.Mortal? Seriously? That’s your title?

      • Dixie

His face is utterly fascinating. And he’s got the most scary-beautiful eyes I’ve ever seen.

You’re all wrong. The title’s great, it’s weird and against the formula.

      • Jeremy

I thought it was funny, although in a lame kinda way.

    • Elysia

Agreed on the title! But frankly, I’d see this movie on the premise alone…sci fi junkie.

  • Mairead

Cillian Murphy is amazing. I’m not liking JT in this though. Isn’t the age limit of the characters 25 and die? There are so many other actors who could play the part. He’s just not a great actor….stick to the music, man.

  • Dwight

Can we stop with all the Justin Timberlake junk. He’s terrible in anything he does. Can’t act at all.

  • colin

I’ll go see it for Murphy, DESPITE the Timberlake/Seyfried combo, how about that?

It’s been really disappointing watching everyone but Tina Fey and Rachel McAdams squander all the cred they got for Mean Girls.

Cillian is an underrated actor and he looks much younger than he is. The problem with Justin is the Ben Stiller factor. In comedies he plays pretty much the same character. In dramas, well Alpha Dog was Justin’s only drama and his performance was blah.

  • nunnya

I loved him in Sunshine as well. I think he’s highly underrated. I agree with the poster who said he is fascinating to look at.

    • orville

Loved Sunshine. Great movie. He does disturbing/fascinating very well–his eyes completely creep me out, but I can’t look away. Even though it wasn’t my favorite one, he was good as the villain in Batman Begins.

  • sam

Murphy was OUTSTANDING in Wind that Shakes the Barley.

    • Mairead

and Breakfast on Pluto, and pretty much everything he’s done.

    • Babs

      This.

      • G

        Agreed. He’s very underrated. :)

  • nate hearne

I will only see it if Cillian Murphy is involved and I am praying, hoping and wishing Justin Timberlake is not involved. Please someone in Hollywood make the wise decision to give Timberlake the “thumbs down”.

  • GeeMoney

Geez… when is JT going to make another album?!? I’m done with him trying to ‘act’.

  • immaculata

    I’m.mortal = unobtanium

How about hiring someone with just a little bit more of imagination?

    • Rebekah

HAHAHA. Agreed. The use of the name ‘unobtainium’ in Avatar made me groan. Also, I will see this movie for Cillian Murphy IN SPITE of it possibly starring the atrocius Seyfried/Timberlake pairing.

  • rch

Now I’m excited about this movie. I was curious to see what he would be in after Inception.

  • gigi

at first, i was excited to see this because of Seyfried! but when they attached JT in it, i changed my mind because i felt that the he will ruin the movie. i’m really disappointed by their decision to make him the male lead! Emil Hirsch or Joseph Gordon Levitt could have been the BEST choice, IMO! then they added Cillian Murphy. i guess, i’ll watch it for Seyfried and Murphy then. they are great actors!

  • Margaret

Murphy is a great addition – everyone should check out his latest ‘Perrier’s Bounty’ – now on dvd. Sounds like a good movie but Justin Timberlake – not an actor and will definitely bring down the movie.

    • rajin

murphy is a wonderful actor. he was amazing in sunshine and 28 days later. I can’t believe they are considering Justin for such a serious role though. Joseph Gordon Levitt is a good choice for the role.

  • Mano

Inceptions is a good movie on dream
    research.

    • brenda

When will Cillian get another lead role?? The trouble with Hollywood is they want to sell movies but they don’t utilize the best actors like Cillian who not only has drop dead good looks but amazing acting ability as well.

  • mel

The plot sounds interesting enough, but if it was only the Timberlake/Seyfried combination, I’d probably think twice. Cillian is definitely a good addition, and a smart one. You should at least have SOMEONE who can act…
