007's number may be up. But there's Connery galore at the website 'Blog, James Blog'

aug132010_1115As my colleague Benjamin Svetkey details in this week’s Entertainment Weekly cover story, James Bond fans may have a long wait before they see their hero on the big screen again. How to spend those long Bond-free hours? May I humbly suggest a few of them could be filled checking out the 007-centric essays on a new website called Blog, James Blog?

In April of this year, a TV documentary producer and die-hard 007 fan named Scott Engel assigned himself the task of writing about every single one of the 22 “official” Bond movies in chronological order. So far, Engel — who, I should point out is a friend of mine — has gotten to the fifth film, 1967’s You Only Live Twice. The guy is taking his time, but Engel’s overviews are exceedingly thorough, with each movie broken down into such categories as “Bond’s Best Pick-Up Line,” “Theme Tune,” “Villain’s Lair,” “Number of People 007 Kills,” “Gadgets/British Government Property Bond Destroys,” and “Bond Girl Sluttiness.” (Is that un-PC? Absolutely. But, then, Bond is very un-PC guy.)

Throw in an entertainingly quirky selection of YouTube videos — the section concerning Thunderball Bond girl Domino Derval is accompanied by a clip of Van Morrison performing the entirely unrelated “Domino” — and you’ve got an entertaining guide to all things shaken, not stirred. And who knows, by the time Engel has completes his mission, they just may have completed another Bond movie.

Which Bond movie would you most like to read about? And how long do you think we will have to wait for another 007 film?

    “Goldfinger Bond girl Domino Derval”?

    I think you mean Thunderball.

Your post is about as accurate as the EW cover story – i.e. hokum dressed up as journalism.

All the Bond sites have slammed the inadequacies and out of date statements in the EW piece.

Entertainment Weekly is notorious for writing about the death of Bond without doing much fact checking or actual journalism. They’ve delcared Bond dead several times. And Bond fans probably are yawning because the British tabloids have been going nuts over this story for months, making up whole paragraphs, which Entertainment Weekly appropriates and reports them as facts. The Bond producers have rightly kept a veil of secrecy and in this internet age that’s tough to do. However, there remains great interest in Bond, i.e. money, or else you wouldn’t be seeing hokum on the Entertainment Weekly cover without them knowing it would bring them more sales

My Aston Martin just went up in flames. I have chest pains over the idea that I may not hear “Bond. James Bond.” for many years to come, if ever again. My favorite car, the Aston Martin, is because of Bond. My favorite drink, a Vesper, is because of Bond. My love and fascination of tall, dark, and handsome European men is because of Bond. Seriously, I can’t imagine myself in a world where Bond doesn’t exist on the big silver screen. Shame on MGM for letting their mess get this big and out of hand! Someone strap me to a traction table already! (And if you didn’t get the traction table reference from Thunderball, then shame on you.)

EW is hack sensationalism yellow ‘journalism’. Period. Just read owen ‘panders to Hollywood studios’ gleiberman’s skewed slanted reviews and you can get a fair idea of EW’s lack of credibility.

I have been a Bond Fan since Diamonds are Forever and have every VHS and DVD of Bond. I think the change-over of the Bond stars over the years has not hurt the films . . well, maybe except for Her Majesty’s Secret Service, but the writers have always kept the same sexy, martini-drinking, clever Bond that we all know and love. That is until the latest release of Quantum of Solace. The writers here completely lost the savvy Mr Bond somewhere. And its clearly NOT Daniel Craig’s fault – he is a fabulous Bond! Highly disappointed and if that’s what they have resorted too, then I guess I’m out!! I think its a travesty to not have a Bond to look forward to – my life will never be the same!
