The biggest story to come out of this year’s Comic-Con was the Avengers panel, which featured the full cast of the superhero mega-movie waving to their adoring public. The movie itself is still two years away, and the script hasn’t even been written yet, but logo fetishists and Nick Fury completists will adore the Avengers teaser that played at Comic-Con.
It’s probably madness to try to parse anything from this prenatal preview, but notice how Samuel L. Jackson specifically says, “The foes no single superhero could withstand.” Plural! This seems to indicate at least a few supervillains in the movie. Thor’s archnemesis Loki has long been rumored as the film’s Big Bad — I wonder who else will make the cut? (As much as I love the Iron Man movies, neither of them really left us with a memorable baddie.) The Avengers actually have a pretty incredible rogues’ gallery — I’m crossing my fingers for a time-jumping sequel featuring Kang, Immortus, Rama-Tut, and the Scarlet Centurion — but it’ll be intriguing to see just how many superpowered people Joss Whedon can keep onscreen at once.
What do you think of the clip, PopWatchers? Not to be a detail-oriented fanboy, but is anyone else really excited that they seem dead-set on calling it The Avengers, instead of just Avengers? And unless I’m crazy, is that the distant cry of the Evil Inception Foghorn at the 00:28 mark?

No, that’s just the copy at the beginning of the Avergers comics. Doesn’t mean anything about the villains in the movie.
Yeah, that’s just Jackson reading the opening above-the-title blurb from every Avengers comic.
Skrulls.
Am I the only one who can’t open the video? Bummed
Dr. Doom. He’s always been Marvel’s numero uno villain. Too bad those Fantastic Four movies have sullied his name.
Sadly, they cannot use Dr. Doom as he is owned by Fox (jerks).
I would like to see Doom, Ultron, Galactus, or Thanos..
No Doom or Galactus. They movie rights for those characters are still held by 20th Century Fox, not Marvel Studios (thanks to the Fantastic Four movies).
Maybe there will be a “taming of the Hulk” plot as a part of the story line. Seems to be where the RDJ scene from the most recent Hulk movie seemed to be pointing…
I agree, The Hulk will prob be a villian at some point in the movie as well as Loki either controlling him or confusing him into thinking the Avengers are the bad guys, or it could go the other way and Hulk is a complete good guy and they use him to fight the Skrulls….
Nick Fury is white. Why is that horrible screamer with the limited range playing him??
racist
That’s not racist IMO, should have stayed as a white character. Was supposed to be a platoon commander in WWII and, unfortunately, no black soldiers were leading troops of white soldiers, wouldn’t have worked at the time.
Ultimate, dude. Ultimate.
beacause David Hasselhoff is busy…Dude there hasn’t been a WHITE NICK FURY in almost 6 years, get with the times…
actually, the comic writers changed the character to black and had sam jackson in mind when doing their new drawings. so marvel came to him with the character. it wasnt any hollywood ploy, but what the writers wanted. from my understanding future nick furys in the comic books at least for the time being, will be black.
Nick Fury is black in the Unlimited line of comics. In the traditional line of comics he is still the same personhe has been since his first comic appearance.
You mean Ultimate line, Wicked.
right on!they need garth ennis’s nick fury.
Ultimate Fury is not only black, he’s basically Sam Jackson.
Redressing the imbalance that even a progressive company like Marvell had with non white & non male characters is no bad thing. Ultimate Fury is awesome and the more he’s in the Marvel movieverse the better.
BTW if you cared so much you’d have known this years ago so why so bothered now? You obviously haven’t even seen a Marvel comic, cartoon or movies for the best part of a decade.?
Tom hasn’t been to a comic shop in a decade or so. I’m sure he’s unfamiliar with the “Ultimate Marvel Universe” so I’ll clue him and any other “Nick Fury is white” advocates we have lurking around.
The Ultimate Universe was conceived as a way to bring newer readers into reading Marvel Comics without having those characters burdened down with decades of continuity that made it difficult for new readers to jump into the books. Without replacing the Marvel Universe that many of us grew up with, Marvel basically started a line of comics that occurred in a “parallel universe” where the characters were familiar but in many cases, quite different from their mainstream universe counterparts. Captain America was still the patriot but his adjustment to modern times was difficult as he still held onto not only the anachronisms of his era but the prejudices and sexism of the era as well. Some of the characters were quite different with Thor even being a possibly “false” thunder god for a while. That being said, one of the changes was somewhat cosmetic (along with some characterization changes) and that was the change in ethnicity of Nick Fury from being white to being black. When they did this, they actually got Samuel L. Jackson’s permission to use his likeness as the basis for the character. This was long before he was cast in the movie. That being said, the movie version being not strictly mainstream marvel continuity nor ultimate marvel continuity doesn’t have to adhere to either in any real way. Obviously they are going to emulate the facets of the characters that make them most accessible to the movie going audience, but I would think that any adherence to race restrictions, unless they are particularly relevant to the character are somewhat useless. Especially considering a character like Nick Fury whose essential character is high ranking war hero and super-spook. I don’t think it matters if you are black or white to play that character. Obviously Marvel Studios felt that using Samuel L. Jackson was an obvious choice given the obvious specific likeness of their Ultimate version.
I hope this clarifies things for the uninitiated. For future comments about how things in the movies don’t exactly mirror the comics, please refer back to the statement I made about the movies not adhering to either the mainstream or ultimate marvel continuities and hopefully we can keep those comments to a minimum.
I heard the Inception fog horn too! This is going to be such a great movie!
I could live with Skrulls, although Marvel may have sold them when they sold the Fantastic 4 rights.
Wouldn’t it be great to have a Civil War Avengers movie some day? Although, it would suck to have a Spiderman-less Civil War.
Well, they could use a white American for Nick Fury in their late installments if they will, considering Nick always uses LMD (Life Model Decoys). Michael Beihn could be the real deal.
woohoo, please refer to my response to Tom above. Samuel L. Jackson is the real deal as far as the movie is concerned. Learn to deal.
Ralph-
Marvel Ultimate sucks and always has sucked. Samuel L Jackson as Nick Fury is retarded.
Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury is retarded in what way exactly, biff? Please elaborate on your extraordinarily poignant insight.
Oh, and for the people inquiring about which villian or villians they’ll be using, I’m sure the Hulk factors in some how because he’s cast. But at Comic Con Marvel unveiled a prop which I believe they said would be used in one of the movies and it was the infinity gauntlet so I wouldn’t be shocked if we saw Thanos crop up. Just saying.
They will screw up Thanos so badly that it won’t be worth seeing.
Seem pretty sure about that, biff. You sure do seem to think you know it all.
I’m an idiot, sorry for the stuff I said earlier.
Except I didn’t post this. I don’t retract anything I said before. I’m not an idiot, but I think the person that decided to post as me is.
