'Piranha 3D' producer responds to James Cameron in a message that'd require 55 Twitter posts

James-Cameron-CantonImage Credit: Michael Tullberg/Getty Images; Ryan Miller/Getty ImagesLesson one in how to handle criticism: If someone insults your film in 89 words, don’t spend 1,374 words fighting back. Especially if the movie in question is Piranha 3D, and especially if you’re fighting against James Cameron. Last week, Cameron told Vanity Fair that Piranha 3D was “an example of what we should not be doing in 3-D.” He continued: “It just cheapens the medium and reminds you of the bad 3-D horror films from the 70s and 80s, like Friday the 13th 3-D. When movies got to the bottom of the barrel of their creativity and at the last gasp of their financial lifespan, they did a 3-D version to get the last few drops of blood out of the turnip.”

Piranha 3D producer Mark Canton responded Tuesday in an e-mail sent to reporters that not only circumvented Cameron’s initial point, but also engaged in much of the same behavior that Canton accused Cameron of. For instance, if you’re going to slam Cameron for name-dropping some notable directors, you shouldn’t mention that you watched Piranha 3D with J.J. Abrams, who “had nothing short of the fabulous, fun 3-D experience that the movie provides.” I agree that it was inconsiderate of Cameron to single out Piranha 3D. Cameron could have easily made his argument without condemning a specific movie. But if Canton thinks Cameron “should be taking the high road,” the producer shouldn’t declare that he found “the 3-D in Avatar to be inconsistent,” and that he had wished “Avatar had been more original in its storytelling.” Mr. Canton, hidden not that deep within your dissertation was the only response you needed to make. And it would have taken all of 11 words: “My sense is that Mr. Cameron has never seen Piranha 3D.

Canton’s unedited response, in its entirety, starts after the jump: READ FULL STORY »

Pittsburgh Steeler Troy Polamalu's hair insured for $1 million

Categories: Ridiculata

Keith-Richards-Polamalu_320.jpg Image Credit: Scott Boehm/Getty Images; Fabrice Coffrini/Getty Images Football star Troy Polamalu is known for his mane of thick, curly, dark hair, and he’s been a spokesperson for Head & Shoulders shampoo for the last two years.

So naturally, it would behoove Procter & Gamble, the makers of Head & Shoulders, to insure their pitchman’s iconic locks, which they announced they did today for $1 million with Lloyd’s of London. Polamalu is following in the footsteps of some pretty famous body parts — over the years, Lloyd’s has proudly insured Ugly Betty‘s America Ferrera’s smile, Keith Richards’ fingers, and Marlene Dietrich’s legs. I’m always kind of tickled when I read about said policies — remember the rumors about J. Lo’s booty? — but I guess when you’re talking about stars whose income relies on a particular feature, sparing no expense is probably a good long-term strategy. So tell me: what are your favorites insurance tales? And which celebrity should definitely insure which body part? READ FULL STORY »

Bedbug scare in Toronto: Okay, who's starting to get scared of movie theater seats?

bed-bugImage Credit: Ingo Arndt/Minden Pictures/Getty ImagesHere’s something that’s been freaking me out: A story was circulating today about a possible bedbug infestation at a Toronto Film Festival screening site. (A pest control company later checked it out and confirmed that the report was actually a false alarm.) I can’t tell if the flurry of bedbug stories I’ve been reading recently is just the latest news panic or an epidemic that really is exploding, but as a mild hypochondriac who lives in the nation’s most-infested city (go New York!), the bedbug scare is really starting to hit me where it hurts. Basically, I’m starting to think twice about movie-theater seats. Among the recent high-profile bedbug victims in NYC was a 25-screen movie theater in Times Square. The Daily News even had a report about how movie theater seats could actually be an excellent vector for spreading the little bloodsuckers because you’re basically a captive host sitting on a fabric seat for two hours while they hitch a ride. So my question: Has anyone actually stopped going to the movies because of bedbug fears? Has it come to that yet?

'The Tourist' or 'Burlesque': Which duo looks more flawless?

tourist-BurlesqueImage Credit: Peter MountainBefore you answer, look closely. Your gut will say Cher and Christina in the Chicago-esque Burlesque poster because they look like paintings, but the latest shot to be released of Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie in The Tourist shows her shielding her eyes from the divine light that is bathing him. (Or, she’s just looking for their makeup artist, who really should be commended.) You’re gonna need to see that one blown up, we know.

David Mills: Why didn't he make the Emmys tribute montage?

Categories: Emmy Awards

David-MillsImage Credit: Albert L. Ortega/WireImage.comClose viewers of the Emmys might have noticed that the late writer David Mills was not included in the tribute montage to those who have been lost in the past year. Mills won great acclaim for the episodes he penned for shows including The Wire, NYPD Blue, and Homicide: Life on the Street before dying of a brain aneurysm at age 48 this March. He even won two Emmys for his work on HBO’s 2000 miniseries The Corner. So where was his name on Sunday night?

In a statement provided to EW today, an Academy of Television Arts and Sciences representative said, “Compiling the In Memoriam is always an arduous task. On occasion, a well respected member of our community may be left off in error. This is certainly not intentional and does not indicate any lack of regard for their accomplishments.”

Mills was a talented and important writer, and his omission has drawn understandable criticism. (For more on Mills, see Ken Tucker’s obituary from this March.) What do you think of the Academy’s explanation?

Joan Cusack joins the cast of Showtime's 'Shameless'

Categories: Casting, Television

Joan-CusackShowtime announced today that Academy Award-nominated actress Joan Cusack has joined the cast of the network’s new series Shameless, which is based on the long-running U.K. show about a dysfunctional working class family. In the U.S. version (debuting Jan. 9 at 9 p.m.), William H. Macy plays the father of six kids living in Chicago and Cusack will take on the role of an agoraphobic housewife who sparks up a “special” friendship — as the press release says — with Macy’s character. Emmy Rossum also stars as Macy’s eldest child who takes charge of the raucous household.

It seems like a perfect role for Cusack, herself a Chicago native. She may be most recently remembered for her movie work, but the actress has a lengthy resume, too, that includes Saturday Night Live and her short-lived ABC sitcom, What About Joan?

What do you guys think of the casting? Fans of the original Shameless: How do you think the American version will fare once it crosses the pond?

Dancing Merengue Dog better than how many of the new 'DWTS' contestants?

The video of a dog (Carrie) dancing with a partner is making the rounds today, and if you haven’t seen it, do yourself a favor and watch below. Carrie has apparently been dancing for years (as evidenced by this TV clip that shows Modern Family star Sofia Vergara witnessing a performance and this one), but I think the raw street performance embedded below is required viewing to truly appreciate the level of talent we’re talking about. It’s when Carrie tilts her head to spin under the man’s arm and her raised paw that gets me.  READ FULL STORY »

Matthew Fox may star in a Neil LaBute play: Is this the right post-'Lost' career?

Matthew-FoxImage Credit: Jeffrey Ufberg/WireImage.comLike a lot of other Lost fans, I never really liked Jack. Sawyer was funnier; Locke was more compelling; Desmond was awesomeness personified. So I have to credit Matthew Fox for making the ultimately Jack-centric series finale such an emotional night of television. Fox spent most of his Lost hiatuses making forgettable movies like Vantage Point and We Are Marshall. It looks like the game plan might be changing: according to the L.A. Times, he’s currently negotiating to star in a Neil LaBute play in London.

On the Friends continuum of post-megahit career moves, that’s certainly a better idea than “star in a spin-off where Jack moves to Los Angeles with sexy results.” But David Schwimmer’s first big job after Friends…was starring in a Neil LaBute play in London. And much as I love Greenzo, Schwimmer’s post-Central Perk directing career has yet to fully take off. (Even Matt LeBlanc is staging a meta-comeback.)

What do you think, PopWatchers? Is Fox’s future with the legitimate theatre? Or should he follow costars Daniel Dae Kim and (fingers crossed!) Josh Holloway back to television?

Glenn Beck launches hot and bothered news website.

glenn-beckImage Credit: Fox NewsGlenn Beck wants (to strangle?) you! Or at least he wants you to peruse his new website, The Blaze, which launched late Monday. Think of the “news” site as The Huffington Post for the conservative set, complete with articles about the leftist agenda, the Fox News star’s Lincoln Memorial rally, and a letter from Beck himself explaining his intentions: READ FULL STORY »
