MTV's good deed of the week: Affecting new spots tackle sexting, condoms, and abuse

Is it just me, or is MTV building up quite the karmic surplus as of late? Sure, they’ve been testing this good-and-true programming track for about six months now, and, thank goodness, it must be working — the sweet-hearted Buried Life is shooting a second season, 16 and Pregnant will be back in the fall to continue the world’s most effective ongoing ad for condom use, and Teen Mom is currently in its second (and ever-more-arresting) season of de-glamorizing young motherhood. Now come the similar-in-spirit public service ads that paint a painfully sympathetic portrait of modern girlhood, with Aubrey Plaza (Parks and Recreation), Jessica Stroup (90210), and Rosario Dawson reading eloquent monologues from Eve Ensler’s bestseller I am an Emotional Creature: the Secret Life of Girls Around the World: READ FULL STORY »

'Project Runway' returns tonight: It's Nina vs. Snooki!

Good afternoon dee-zeye-nehs! While fans of those crazy, tanorexic kids from Jersey are GTLing in anticipation of another big premiere tonight, I’m sure we can rustle up a modicum of (infinitely more chic) excitement for the return of Project Runway. Yep, the eighth season kicks off tonight on Lifetime at 9 p.m. in its new, 90-minute form. What will those extra 30 minutes mean? More time to assess the garments as they float down the runway? Sorta, but you won’t notice a drastic change in that regard. Mostly, the extra 30 translates into even more opportunity to pimp out Brother, Hewlett-Packard, L’Oréal, and Piperlime, which takes over from Bluefly.com as the accessories wall to be dealt with thoughtfully.

Which of the two reality-show premieres are you most excited about? Are both programmed on your DVRs? I’ve never seen a single episode of Jersey Shore — even though EW continues to write my paychecks — and I don’t plan on starting, so there’s no question about which one will be providing the entertainment in my living room tonight. Besides, Snooki is no match for Nina Garcia. Uh-uh.

Vince Vaughn in talks for David O. Russell film. Who should play his daughter?

Filed under: Movies, News and tagged: , , , ,

Vince-VaughnImage Credit: Janet Mayer/PR PhotosVince Vaughn is reportedly in talks to star in David O. Russell’s next film, Old St. Louis, according to Deadline. The movie, which Russell also wrote, is about a traveling salesman who reconnects with his young daughter. Kick-Ass star Chloë Moretz, soon to be seen in October’s Let Me In, is rumored to be in consideration for the daughter role.

Nothing, however, is decided yet, so let’s have some fun here: Who else would you want to see play opposite Vaughn, PopWatchers? Is Moretz the best choice? Though they don’t quite look blood related, I’m gonna suggest Elle Fanning, who stars in December’s Sofia Coppola flick Somewhere (watch the awesome trailer after the jump). Those Fanning gals are awfully talented. READ FULL STORY »

'Yogi Bear' trailer: There are no words, but here's 141

Filed under: Movies and tagged: , , ,

The trailer for Yogi Bear, the big-screen 3-D frolic in the forest featuring the voices of Dan Aykroyd as Yogi and Justin Timberlake as Boo Boo, is going to be polarizing. There will be those who say, “What is Anna Faris doing in a ABC Family original starring Snow 2: Brain Freeze‘s Tom Cavanagh, whose eyes are so blue?” And there will be those who accept that this is a movie for kids and recognize that they will laugh, perhaps hysterically, at all the wacky physical humor. I just hope they don’t notice that the guard rail Yogi repeatedly smacks his butt against when Boo Boo’s trying to pull him into a moving train didn’t exist when Yogi was running. (Though that gaffe could just be a result of trailer editing. We’ll have to see the movie to find out!) READ FULL STORY »

Today in celebrity feuds: Pamela Anderson calls Janet Jackson 'greedy.'

celebrity-adsImage Credit: Rocco Laspata for Blackglama; PetaLet the catfight begin! PETA supporter Pamela Anderson gave an interview to Out in which she slams Janet Jackson for appearing in a recent Blackglama ad campaign wearing fur. Says Anderson, “It’s disappointing. She has spoken out against fur before. I don’t know why some people stop listening to their heart. I guess some people get greedy, but it’s sad.” (Reps for Anderson and Jackson did not return EW’s request for comment.)

Ouch. Personally, I would like for this feud to be settled via dance-off — that seems to be the most logical solution. Anderson is just coming off Dancing With the Stars and Jackson obviously has amazing moves, so why not put them to good use? Who’s with me?

'Thor' Comic-Con Trailer: Gods, Beards, and Natalie Portman

Tagged: ,

The first comic I ever purchased was The Mighty Thor issue #447, so watching the extended Comic-Con preview of next year’s Thor movie is a true religious experience. The interesting thing about Thor is that his stories tend to criss-cross several different genres: contemporary superhero action, a hefty helping of Lord of the Rings-ish epic fantasy, plus some laser-beam sci-fi just for the heck of it. (Some of the most interesting Thor stories are just the thunder god flying through space with his hammer, which when you think about it, is pretty surreal.) This first tease indicates that director Kenneth Branagh is gamely attempting to hit all those tonal beats. Check out the video and see what you think. READ FULL STORY »

'In Plain Sight' picked up for two more seasons; Tyler Perry teams up with Lionsgate for 'Peeples'

excess-hollywood

  • In Plain Sight won’t drop out of, well, sight anytime soon: USA has picked up the show for two more seasons. [Variety]
  • Tyler Perry will collaborate with Lionsgate for the 12th time on We The Peeples, which centers on a man who confronts disaster when meeting his girlfriend’s parents. Jeez, I knew Levi Johnston was was trying to infiltrate the biz, but this is getting ridiculous. [Variety]
  • Paul Giamatti is set to play Nikita Khrushchev in an HBO telepic about the Soviet Union chairman’s 13-day sojourn in America in the late 1950s. In Soviet Russia, communism rebuilds you! Aw, I’m just showin’ Khrushchev’s Kuzka’s mother. [Variety]
  • Million Dollar Arm is heading to Disney. The film is about two Indian men who travel to America to play in minor league baseball, and not Robocop‘s costume. [THR]
  • My Boys star Jordana Spiro will join Nicolas Cage and Nicole Kidman in the cast of Trespass, playing Cage’s girlfriend, who becomes an accomplice in a kidnapping led by Cage’s character. Fingers crossed he kidnapped this guy.
  • Robert Duvall and Lucas Black, both stars of Get Low, will team up once again in Seven Days in Utopia, about a young golfer — played by Black — who gets guidance from an eccentric man after a “public disaster.” Hm. Do I go Tiger Woods here, or Happy Gilmore? I’ll go Happy: I can’t wait to hear Duvall’s version of “We’ve Only Just Begun!” [The Wrap]

President Obama on 'The View': Elisabeth Hasselbeck chooses 'aggressive terrier' over 'attack dog' mode

obama-on-the-viewImage Credit: Steve Fenn/ABCPresident Barack Obama visited The View today, and depending on your worldview, his pop-culture cred either took a major hit, or went up a few points after responding to a series of silly questions from Joy Behar. “I’ve got to admit that I don’t know who Snooki is,” the President said, laughing, after being asked if the Jersey Shore firebrand should run for mayor of Wasilla, Alaska. Obama was also forced to admit he doesn’t have any Justin Bieber tunes on his iPod, just moments after saying if you could name a song, it was probably on one of his playlists. And later, when asked about his Twitter account, Obama conceded that “some 20-year-old is doing a lot of the tweeting.”

Still, the President’s freewheeling, hour-long appearance — the first-ever visit by a sitting U.S. president to a daytime talk show, Whoopi Goldberg proudly noted — wasn’t all air-kisses and softball questions. The View‘s own commander-in-chief Barbara Walters, pressing pause on her recovery from heart surgery to appear on this special episode, point-blank asked Obama why the U.S. doesn’t get out of Afghanistan, while panelist Sherri Shepherd, discussing the Shirley Sherrod imbroglio, wanted to know if Obama thinks America is “still racist.”

And then, of course, there was The View‘s conservative poster child Elisabeth Hasselbeck, whose first question to the President –  which followed Behar’s query about the right wing and Fox news “hijacking the [political] narrative” in the country — was surprisingly softball: READ FULL STORY »

Russell Brand to play swashbuckler John Hawkwood

Filed under: Movies and tagged: ,

Russell-BrandImage Credit: Jason LaVeris/FilmMagic.comRussell Brand is negotiating to play real-life swashbuckler John Hawkwood in the big-screen action comedy Hawkwood, Deadline reports. (EW’s request for comment has yet to be returned.) Described as “a morally challenged but gifted swordsman,” Hawkwood was a 14th century European mercenary, a sword for hire. I’m torn: It seems like an interesting character Brand could have real fun with… but won’t we all be comparing his take to Johnny Depp’s Oscar-nominated turn as Capt. Jack Sparrow, even if he’s land-bound? Then again, Brand is currently shooting a remake of Arthur, so he must like the challenge of going up against classic performances.

Is there enough room in your heart for two eccentric swashbucklers? (If there’s room enough for four Pirates of the Caribbean films, the answer could be yes — if Brand’s Hawkwood is truly funny and original.)

Sigourney Weaver, Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, and the cast of 'Paul' talk double rainbows, orgasms, and Steven Spielberg

comic-con-paulDuring three magical days at Comic-Con last week, I had many fascinating conversations, from Guillermo del Toro discussing his love for The Haunted Mansion and the challenge of H.P. Lovecraft adaptations, to Mark Wahlberg making a colorful case for his thespian credentials. But if I had to choose a favorite, I think I’d go with the cast of Paul, the sci-fi comedy written by and starring Shawn of the Dead‘s Simon Pegg and Nick Frost (pictured), about a couple of British über-geeks who start a tour of U.S. UFO hot spots at San Diego Comic-Con (natch), only to encounter an actual extra-terrestrial named Paul (and voiced by Seth Rogen). It wasn’t one thing that really made these interviews so fun, really, as much as the sum total: Pegg and Frost discussing their writing process together and what it was like working with Steven Spielberg on The Adventures of Tintin; and director Greg Mottola (Superbad) with co-stars Sigourney Weaver, Jeffrey Tambor, Bill Hader, and Joe Lo Truglio talking about everything from double rainbows to orgasms, the power of Comic-Con to the glory of Sigourney Weaver.

Check out the four-part interview after the jump, and you’ll (hopefully) see what I mean. READ FULL STORY »
