Clip du jour: 'Star Wars' subway ride

Improv Everywhere’s latest mischief-making “mission” (previously: a birthday party for a stranger and Ghostbusters at the NYPL) was to bring a little bit of the Force to New York City. Star Wars Subway Car had “agents” dressed as Princess Leia, a few Storm Troopers, and Lord Vader, all riding the 6 train. The full rundown is here, and the video is below: READ FULL STORY »

'The Hills' series finale: The joke's on us, apparently

the-hills-finaleIf you’ve been watching the final season of The Hills, you know that last night’s series finale came down to the relationship status of Kristin and Brody. After dating, breaking up, being friends, then friends with benefits, Kristin was ready for commitment, while Brody (who only a few weeks ago was “enjoying being single”) was suddenly seeing someone else. It may not have been as climactic as Lauren-Jason-Heidi-Spencer season finales of yore, but they had to find something to fill the final 30 minutes.

What? Who are these people? Isn’t The Hills about two blond girls who live in a nice apartment complex in West Hollywood and pretend to go to work sometimes? For those who stopped watching long before Justin Bobby or Stacie the Bartender came along, last night’s episode was probably a bit confusing. Of course, what mattered most was not how these forgettable season 6 story lines would end, but how The Hills — the show, the era, the phenomenon — would be remembered. READ FULL STORY »

Is anyone in Hollywood scrappier than Mario Lopez?

mario-lopezBig news: Mario Lopez has a VH1 reality show! I mean, on the one hand, of course he does, because everyone has a VH1 reality show. If there’s ever a lull in my conversations with friends and family, I just ask “How’s your VH1 reality show?” and it always goes over really well. But honestly, if anyone “deserves” a VH1 reality show it’s probably Mario Lopez because Mario Lopez is one of the most earnest famous people I’ve ever seen.

Do you ever watch Extra? I “have to,” “for work,” and I’ll go ahead and just keep telling myself that. READ FULL STORY »

David O. Russell quits long-delayed 'Nailed'

jake-jessicaImage Credit: George Pimentel/WireImage.com; Pascal Le Segretain/Getty ImagesWriter-director David O. Russell (I Heart Huckabees) has backed out of Nailed, a political satire/comedy starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Jessica Biel. Russell’s withdrawal was prompted by undisclosed disagreements between him and financier Ronald Tutor, but I feel a journalistic responsibility to present to you the following sentence pairing from THR’s report in all of its (unintentionally?) hilarious glory: READ FULL STORY »

'Deadliest Catch' recap: An emotional goodbye to Capt. Phil Harris

phil-harris-deadliest-catchImage Credit: Blair Bunting/Getty ImagesIn all my years watching reality TV, I don’t know that I’ve ever seen a moment as real and as achingly beautiful as ailing Phil Harris kissing his hand and putting it to his son Josh’s face, then Josh leaning down to kiss his father’s forehead. That conversation is something that will stick forever with the record 8.5 million viewers who saw it. You want to know why fans have been sobbing through the episodes leading up to Phil’s death — it’s because as much as we thought we related to men who do a job that 99.9 percent of us will never do, we knew they were a breed of their own. When Phil’s story went from the Bering Sea to a hospital room, it packed the punch of a hero falling, of a comedian who suddenly starts to cry. And all at once, we really could relate to him and his boys — especially his boys. We all have, or will, watch someone we love die. We’ll have things we want to say and be afraid to, because we know that saying the words will make us cry, and seeing us as broken as we feel will only bring our loved one more pain and regret. Capt. Phil insisted the cameras keep filming as he recovered from his stroke, because he believed the story needed an ending. I can’t imagine how difficult it was for his boys to watch this episode (Josh told EW yesterday that he’d had an advance copy of it for five days and hadn’t been able to bring himself to play it), but I have to think that having their final heart-to-hearts with their father on-camera will eventually be of comfort to them. They will never need doubt if their memories of those conversations are accurate. Josh will see that he said everything Phil, a man who worried that he hadn’t been a good enough father, needed to hear; Jake will be reminded that his father was proud of him for making that decision to go to a rehab center in Seattle. Jay Manuel in the 'Degrassi' movie: EW exclusive sneak peek at two of our favorite Canadian things

We admit it: We’re suckers for all things Degrassi and Top Model. Oh, and all things Canadian (Alanis Morissette, universal health care, Bachelorette scandals). So we’re particularly looking forward to The Heat Is On, this summer’s Degrassi movie event airing July 19 on TeenNick, in which the angsty Canadian high schoolers lighten up and take a trip to Manhattan — where they meet up with Top Model‘s Jay Manuel (who’s also Canadian!). Here, after the jump, an exclusive sneak-peek clip in which Holly J. (Charlotte Arnold) encounters Mr. Jay before her first day at her summer internship at a place that looks startlingly like MTV (but is apparently called TVM — totally different). READ FULL STORY »

Micky Dolenz joins Debbie Gibson and Tiffany's 'epic battle' Syfy movie. Who's next?

80s-starsImage Credit: Steve Granitz/WireImage.com; Neilson Barnard/Getty Images; John M. Heller/Getty ImagesMicky Dolenz — former Monkees member, Hollywood character actor, and the voice of Snuggle the Fabric Softener Bear — will co-star in Debbie Gibson and Tiffany’s original Syfy movie ‘Mega Python vs. Gatoroid’. I love how “Debbie Gibson and Tiffany’s original Syfy movie Mega Python vs. Gatoroid” is a legit informational entertainment news clause at this point. Oh, of course. That. Mega Python vs. Gatoroid is set for sometime in 2011 and will hopefully be viewed and cherished by more than just the EW staff and a few hundred other nerds.

According to THR, it’s not known what Dolenz’ role will be, so it’s anyone’s guess who will join this motley crew next. I’m pulling for a cameo from The Snuggle Bear and maybe Michael Bolton as someone’s skeezy older brother. And I don’t think anyone would mind a scene where Paula Abdul randomly wanders in, just so everyone can say “Hey, Paula” and then return to their regularly scheduled programming.

PopWatch readers’ initial suggestions included Pat Benetar, Annie Lennox, the Wilson Sisters, Lita Ford, and “Terri Nunn from Berlin vs. Nena.” Who else deserves a place in this epic TV movie?

Mel Gibson recordings: Have you listened?

mel-gibsonImage Credit: Michael Caulfield/OG/Getty ImagesIn Mel Gibson’s film Apocalypto, audiences watched as characters were beheaded, sliced open, and violently beaten to death. Yet, I would rather watch that graphic 2006 flick a dozen times with my eyelids taped open than listen to one of the three (so far) recordings in which Mel Gibson purportedly rants against ex-girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva. (In the first, he purportedly uses the n-word; in the second, he allegedly threatens to kill Grigorieva; and in the third, he reportedly uses a racial epithet when discussing the couple’s nanny.)

I am not avoiding these clips out of support for Gibson, but because there’s something so inherently disgusting about the tapes — the way the actor all-too-easily drops racial slurs and shows no shame about violence towards women — that immediately triggers a resistant response in my brain. I understand why folks like EW’s Owen Gleiberman are mesmerized by the recordings and Gibson’s self-delusion. But unlike other private celebrity conversations gone public (Alec Baldwin’s voicemail to his daughter, Christian Bale’s on-set rant), this one seems so ultimately unforgivable, vile, and downright scary that I’m not sure I could listen and then just go about my day after peeking inside such a dysfunctional — and dangerous — relationship. This is one private conversation that I don’t want to be a part of, even if I feel it’s necessary for us all to be aware of it.

I imagine I’m not the only one — who else can’t bear to listen?
