The new trailer for Dinner for Schmucks, the comedy starring Paul Rudd as a man who brings Steve Carell to his boss’ monthly meal for idiots to get ahead in the company, reveals more of Carell’s character’s lunacy and that Rudd’s character has been stalked for two years by a woman (Lucy Punch), to whom Carell gives Rudd’s address. Am I the only one who recognized Punch from Ella Enchanted*? Please say no. Please say no. Watch the preview below.

'The Sorcerer's Apprentice' director Jon Turteltaub on how to make a famous cartoon into a live-action film. Plus, '3 Ninjas'!
Image Credit: Abbot Genser; Inset: Jemal Countess/Getty ImagesTo this day I remember the first time I watched Fantasia — and not because I enjoyed it so much. Rather, I remember being incensed when my mom randomly turned off a show I was watching — which was either David the Gnome or Muppet Babies – to make me watch Fantasia, claiming I’d enjoy it. I think I fell asleep shortly after watching the only part I remember being entertained by, The Sorcerer’s Apprentice.
So I had a chuckle a little bit when I spoke with director Jon Turteltaub last week about his live-action movie version of The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, in theaters today, because he aware of the snoozy effect of Fantasia that put me into slumber as a child. All this time I had thought I was just an uncultured child! But even more fascinating than his awareness of Fantasia‘s Ambien-like properties on children was the process he went through to make a classic cartoon segment into a big-screen movie that he hoped would more than keep the audience’s attention.
ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: First, let’s talk casting, specifically Jay Baruchel (Knocked Up, She’s Out of My League). It would have been so easy for you to cast some Hollywood guy to sell tickets, put a pair of glasses on him, and called him a nerd.
JON TURTELTAUB: Jay doesn’t need the glasses. READ FULL STORY »
'Hawaii Five-0' extended preview waits 69 seconds to show Alex O'Loughlin shirtless, but who's counting!
CBS has released an extended preview of its new fall drama Hawaii Five-0 starring Alex O’Loughlin as Lt. Commander Steve McGarrett, Scott Caan as Det. Danny “Danno” Williams, Daniel Dae Kim as Chin Ho Kelly, Grace Park as Kono Kalakaua, and Jean Smart as the governor of Hawaii, who gives the task force they form full immunity and means. The trailer definitely sells the show’s strong points — the chemistry between O’Loughlin and Caan, the location that will allow O’Loughlin to occasionally change his shirt in public (I recommend producers read my 2009 open letter to showrunners of procedurals starring actors we’d like to see shirtless for inspiration), and the potential for guest stars (James Marsters is the pilot’s Big Bad). What do you think? I’ve always said Monday at 10 p.m. is the right time for a fun hour-long show that doesn’t try to be anything more than entertainment. We’re bummed to be back at work and want one more night of escapism before the week swallows us whole. My DVR will be very happy recording this and ABC’s Castle. Watch the preview below. Betty White will guest star on 'Community' premiere
Image Credit: Harper Smith/NBC; Chris Hatcher/PR PhotosPin-up calendar It Gal Betty White will guest star on the second season premiere of NBC’s Community as Professor June Bauer, “an esteemed, albeit slightly unhinged, anthropology professor.” Perfect. She is kind of already that anyway. Aren’t we all anthropology professors, in a way? Maybe, but most of us don’t have the pressure to beat the life out of CBS’ Big Bang Theory weighing on our 88-year-old anthropology professor shoulders.
Community and Big Bang will go up against each other on Thursday nights. Can Betty ‘n’ Chevy win? And is anyone else even more excited about the near-certainty of Betty White making a cameo on The Soup? [The Live Feed]

'Batman 3' production to begin April 2011
Image Credit: Stephen VaughanHoly sequel-news, Batman! At the London premiere of Inception, star Michael Caine revealed to Digital Spy that Christopher Nolan’s as-of-yet-untitled sequel to Batman Begins, and the $1 billion-worldwide-grossing The Dark Knight, is slated to begin production in April of 2011. Although Nolan, his brother Jonathan, and David S. Goyer are still working on the script, an insider confirms that, although subject to change, Warner Bros. is indeed on track for an April start date, and Christian Bale, Morgan Freeman, Michael Caine, and Gary Oldman are attached.
So far, Nolan himself has been reluctant to talk about the future of the caped crusader. Apparently he’s very much of the mindset that, until his current film, the critically-adored Inception, opens this Friday, he’s not interested in discussing details of his future projects. But Warner Bros. has also penciled in the next Batman for a July 20, 2012 release date. The studio was determined to set a definitive release date this far in advance due to the strong slate of other superhero movies to be released in the next two years.
So Bat-philes, does this news that the studio’s gears are turning get you excited for Nolan’s next comic-book opus? Or are you even more psyched about his hand in producing a Superman reboot?

- Score: A Hockey Musical, which stars Olivia Newton-John, will open the Toronto Film Festival Sept. 9. Sorry, kids, in my day, we called that “Ice Capades.” [Variety]
- Zoe Green is in talks to write a screenplay for Disney centered on gargoyles. Apparently, gargoyles are part of “a world and mythology that the studio was keen to explore.” Uh-oh — time to gear up for Team Victor vs. Team Hugo! [Variety]
Lunchtime Poll: Humanity at its finest?
Image Credit: KCSPresse/Splash NewsJavier Bardem and Penelope Cruz made their not-very-publicized romance official by getting married in the Bahamas earlier this month. Look at them. Sometimes I can’t; it’s like looking directly into the Spanish sun and the sun is chanting “S-E-X.”
If/when aliens attack and/or humans need to decide who shall represent them in the universe at large, there will be no question. In lieu of Vicky Cristina Barcelona on DVD, we should send Penélope Cruz and Javier Bardem. The overlord will say “What have we here?” and they will say “We are humans, from Earth,” and all other beings will have to assume that on Earth, everyone looks like that and everyone’s in love and everyone is sexy.
We must impress the aliens.
