'Clueless' was released 15 years ago today. I'm totally buggin'!

Categories: Movies, Nostalgia

cluelessDon’t want to believe it? Me neither. But it’s true: Clueless turns 15 today. Let’s totally pause to reflect.

Truth be told, movies like Clueless always play with my feelings a little bit. I can never decide if I’m nostalgic/miss the time when losing your Cranberries CD was the worst thing that could happen or just embarrassed. So today, 15 years after we were exposed to a satirical look at teenage life in Beverly Hills, let’s come to terms with our feelings.

Embarrassed = Yes, I really took fashion cues from this movie seriously and wore white knee-high socks and plaid skirts with Mary Janes. Just once. I swear. Just me? Okay.

Nostalgic = Making a “W” with our fingers when I say “Whatever!” will never be as cool as it was in 1995.

Nostalgic = There was time when teenagers survived without texting…

'Inception': What was the best scene in the weekend's No. 1 movie?

You’ve seen Inception, right? Because if you haven’t, I’m going to have to ask you to close your browser and back away from your computer: This blog item is not for you. If, however, you caught Christopher Nolan’s mind-bending delight — which opened to a hefty $60.4 million weekend at the box office — then I’ve got a question for you: READ FULL STORY »

Jennifer Aniston topless again (to advertise her perfume)

jennifer-anistonIf there’s one thing that Jennifer Aniston has no doubt learned, it’s that topless shots get buzz. (Okay, that’s not exactly one of life’s great mysteries.) But there appears to be a legitimate reason why she’s half-nude in the gorgeous black-and-white promo shots advertising her new perfume, Lolavie, which will be sold exclusively at Harrods. “I am not a big perfume-y fragrance fan,” she told the Daily Mail. “I want people to go, ‘What is that?’ ‘You smell great!’ But most of all, I wanted it to smell natural.” Topless in one of her favorite holiday spots = natural.

I don’t think I could bring myself to buy a perfume bottle with Jennifer Aniston’s name on it, but it is the first celebrity scent I’ve had an urge to sniff in a while. If you’ve flipped through the March 2010 Architectural Digest cover story on her home, you know she takes her artistic collaborations seriously and is telling the truth when she says she was involved with the scent’s development every step of the way. I feel like she would create a scent that light enough to float to the ceiling of a room, whereas, say, Britney Spears, who’s announced her new scent, Radiance, would create one strong enough to mask an odor. Are you tempted to smell Aniston’s signature scent?

'Degrassi: The Boiling Point' premieres tonight: Most shocking ever?

Degrassi-movieImage Credit: Paul Shiraldi/TeenNickBecause Teen Nick only seems to air commercials for Proactiv, Education Con-nec-tion, and its own programming, I’ve seen the promos for Degrassi: The Boiling Point many more times than I’d care to admit. In my defense, they have been playing every Degrassi episode ever in preparation for the new season. That means Paige’s rape, Manny’s abortion, Emma’s eating disorder, the shooting, Craig’s drug problem, etc. How could I not watch?

Of course reliving these old episodes just makes me miss Paige, Marco, Jimmy, and Craig, but to be fair the younger kids at Degrassi Community School know how to cook up a good scandal, too: last season we got crystal meth use, vampire fantasies, the morning-after pill, and a HPV scare. So even though I’m missing the originals, I’m still counting down the hours until new episodes of my favorite guilty, not-so-secret pleasure, thanks to a deliciously dramatic trailer: A mysterious new student! Little Claire gets a trendy haircut (and perhaps a new love interest?)! Riley gets comfortable with PDA! Fiona gets slapped! The school goes into Lockdown mode! Oh, Canada. READ FULL STORY »

Daniel Radcliffe and Tom Felton sign up for their first post-'Harry Potter' movies

potter-alumniImage Credit: Janet Mayer/PR Photos; Anthony G. Moore/PR PhotosJust like their rivaling on-screen counterparts, Daniel Radcliffe and Tom Felton seem to be doing their best to keep up with each other in the real world, now that the Harry Potter films have finished filming. Over the weekend, the actors each booked a new movie role in a supernatural thriller, and it appears that their time in the hallowed halls of Hogwarts have prepared them well for their upcoming features.

Radcliffe is set to appear in Hammer Films’ The Woman in Black. The story is roughly as follows: READ FULL STORY »

The Rock: Can he be an action star again?

Categories: Movie Trailers, Movies

Introducing Faster, the latest action-packed thrill ride from the star of…The Tooth Fairy? Remember when Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson used to make action movies? Well, he’s at it again, judging by the teaser for his upcoming fall release. It has all the requisite ingredients for a testosterone-heavy flick: guns, cars, a leather jacket, and a strip club. But once a guy has made The Game Plan, can he still be believable as an action hero? Or will The Rock always be The Rock, no matter how many kiddie movies he’s made? Take a look at the trailer — embedded after the jump — and let us know if you’re still willing to smell what he’s cooking. READ FULL STORY »

Bryan Singer wanted Taylor Lautner for 'X-Men: First Class.' Who would you have liked to see him play?

Categories: Geekery, Movies

bryan-singerImage Credit: Glenn Harris/PR Photos; Janet Mayer/PR PhotosOver the weekend, Blastr caught up with X-Men: First Class producer Bryan Singer in an attempt to pry some casting info about the 2011 prequel. It’s been long rumored that Twilight star Taylor Lautner was handpicked to play a young blue-furred Beast. And Singer indeed did admit that he had wanted the artist currently known as Jacob to play a role in the film. (Of course, as we already have learned, the actor’s schedule was too packed to fit another project in.)

“I wanted Taylor to do it, I really did,” Singer said. “He’s doing a movie in Pittsburgh called Abduction, and then he’s got the next Twilight movie. We talked about it a lot. He is a friend. And I really wanted to make it work. It just doesn’t look like it’s possible to do it.” Too bad. We can’t help but wonder whether he would have been a good fit for Beast? (Even though he’d have to pile on some more weight, for sure.) I’d think, however, he’d make a better Ice Man or Collosus. At least we’d still get to see him in regular form. What do you think? Who would you have liked to see Lautner play in First Class?

'RuPaul's Drag U' series premiere: Thankfully, gay television -- and RuPaul -- return tonight!

drag-uImage Credit: LogoFace it: Summer television is A) not gay enough (True Blood can’t do it all!), and B) sadly devoid of the presence of RuPaul. But thank your lucky stars, because tonight TV gets gayer and draggier — and RuPaul reemerges! That’s right: It’s the much-anticipated premiere of RuPaul’s Drag U, the Drag Race spin-off that features some of the original show’s fave queens making over straight ladies — RuPaul calls them “biological women” — who are in dire need of some TLC and a new look. Tonight, specifically, centers on “lady-boys” Jujubee, Ongina, and Raven — loves these three so much! — showing three “boy-ladies” how it’s done. (Personally, I can’t wait for creepy Drag Race season 1 contestant Tammie Brown to become a “professor” later in the season. Messsss!)

John Ratzenberger is Kevin Sorbo's guardian angel in 'What If…': Who's yours?

Categories: Movie Trailers, Movies

Behold, the return of Kevin Sorbo and Kristy Swanson. In the movie What if…, in theaters (?!) Aug. 20, Sorbo plays Ben, a man who left his college sweetheart, Wendy (Swanson), and his dream of becoming a preacher to pursue a business opportunity. Fifteen years later, his Mercedes breaks down and a tow truck driver (John Ratzenberger) claims to be his guardian angel and gives him a look at what his life would have been like had he followed his original path. Watch the trailer below. Yes, it looks like it should be on the Hallmark Channel in December, but Sorbo and Swanson appear to give surprisingly understated performances (that could land them a Hallmark Channel movie!).

Ratzenberger is totally a guardian angel I would get. I’ve always imagined mine as like a George Carlin, who really has no interest in my life and only pays attention to me when I speak inarticulately, at which point, he takes out his annoyance by screwing with me. That explains so much…. Who do you picture as your guardian angel? (God, by the way, looks like Steve Martin.) READ FULL STORY »

'Hot in Cleveland': How old are you if you get excited about a Tim Conway guest spot?

Hot-in-Cleveland-guest-starsImage Credit: PRN/PR Photos; Albert L. Ortega/PR Photos; Chris Hatcher/PR PhotosI’ve been slacking on taping TV Land’s Hot in Cleveland, but that’s about to change: Tim Conway will play a suitor who goes toe-to-toe with Max (Carl Reiner) to win the heart of Elka (Betty White) in the July 28 episode “It’s Not That Complicated.” (Pause as we miss Harvey Korman.)

The guest stars continue to line up for this show: The Aug. 4 episode will feature Ugly Betty‘s Justin, Mark Indelicato, as Zack, “a drama nerd and fan of Victoria Chase (Wendie Malick) who invites his hero to give some notes on his school’s production of Romeo & Juliet.” LOVE IT. Boston Legal‘s Clarence, Gary Anthony Williams, will also guest as Coach Taylor, who “trains and treats the drama team like a football team, much to Zack’s dismay.” (Sounds cliché, but could still be funny.)

Dave Foley (NewsRadio, The Kids in the Hall) has been added to the cast of the Aug. 11 episode, which will also feature Joe Jonas (as Valerie Bertinelli’s character’s son). Foley will play Dr. Robert Moore, the “head of a local medical foundation who comes to see Victoria (Malick) when she fakes a deadly disease to gain sympathy and votes for her Emmy nomination.” I hope Dr. Moore is sarcastic, because Foley facing off with Malick = delicious.

Have you stuck with Hot in Cleveland since its premiere? If not, are these episode descriptions enough to warrant your return?
