Lunchtime Poll: Anthony Weiner will not yield the floor

In movies, Congress is full of handsome moralists with fantastic hair who debate the finer points of American law. Politicians deliver fiery, passionate speeches that all but guarantee the actors a spot in a future Academy Awards “In Memoriam” montage. Real-life Congress, as anyone who has ever been forced to watch C-SPAN knows, is a little bit different. The median age is 87, and debates usually focus on semi-abstract bits of congressional decorum.

So, at first, I was confused by the footage of Rep. Anthony Weiner giving a loud, passionate speech during the current debate over whether to provide monetary aid to the 9/11 first responders. But then it occurred to me: he’s actually just re-enacting a famous scene from a movie about the American government! PopWatchers, help me out here. Watch the video below, and try to figure out which scene Weiner’s doing after the jump… READ FULL STORY »

'Pee-wee's Big Adventure' is the best bicycling movie ever? What the...!?

best-bike-movieImage Credit: Everett Collection (2)I’ll be honest, I’ve never read a single issue of Bicycling magazine. And now I know why: The editors over there must be nuts. Sure, they may know all about the Tour de France and why our lycra-clad, two-wheeled Olympians wear those funny-looking aerodynamic helmets, but they clearly know squat about movies. In the upcoming issue of the magazine, they pick “The Best Cycling Movies of All Time” and the rankings are highly suspect at best. In fact, I’ll save you a few bucks and spill the Top 9 list right here…

9. Key Exchange; 8. 2 Seconds; 7. The Stars and the Watercarriers; 6. A Sunday in Hell; 5. The Bicycle Thief; 4. American Flyers; 3. The Triplets of Belleville; 2. Breaking Away; 1. Pee-wee’s Big Adventure

Okay, now I’ll admit that coming up with any ‘Best Of’ list is a highly subjective task — in case you hadn’t noticed we do a lot of ranking here at EW. But this list raises all sorts of head-scratching questions. READ FULL STORY »

'SYTYCD' b-boy Jose Ruiz talks injury, critiques, and his crush on all-star Lauren

its-joseImage Credit: Mathieu Young/FoxAfter escaping elimination during last week’s shocking results show, Jose Ruiz, 21, joined Billy Bell as the newly voted off SYTYCD contestants. Jose called EW this morning to talk about his elimination, the judges’ critiques, and why he didn’t perform in those group numbers.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: How are you feeling about last night?
JOSE RUIZ:
I feel great. I have no regrets. It’s just been an awesome journey and an awesome experience.

Why do you think the judges chose not eliminate anyone last week?
I just really thought that they saw that I was really elevating in my own style of dance. Every time I would have to do a solo, I would always come out with something different and just always try to push myself to come out with something new and more dynamic. I think that the judges really saw that, and I think that’s why. It’s almost like everyone did so good that they couldn’t send anyone home. READ FULL STORY »

Stephen Colbert and Andy Cohen perfect 'The Real Housewives' eye roll

Andy Cohen took a break from his Bravo clubhouse duties to play the role of late night guest on The Colbert Report last night, where he was welcomed with a complimentary vodka soda (extra light on the soda). Because Colbert legally cannot show footage of The Real Housewives on his show (“the two universes would explode” if he did), he and Andy reenacted an “actual transcript” of the memorable season 2 Bethenny vs. Kelly verbal smackdown (“We’re not friends…This is you…this is me!”). The two men were impressively fluent in Housewife, each playing their character with vigor, enthusiasm, and plenty of eye rolls. Watch it below (reenacting starts at the 4:00 mark): READ FULL STORY »

'Sinbad: The Fifth Voyage' trailer: Oh, so it's supposed to look kinda bad

The trailer for Sinbad: The Fifth Voyage may have you scratching your head until you realize that it’s an homage to Ray Harryhausen’s Dynamation. Then, you hope that Patrick Stewart, whose voice fills the preview, knows what he’s doing and that this will do Harryhausen, who turned 90 last month, proud. Watch the trailer below, along with a crash course on Dynamation — a combination of “animation, normal human action, and trick photo effects in color” as seen in The 7th Voyage of Sinbad. (“The out-flung arm of the sleeping princess actually shrinks before your eyes. This effect was achieved by taking the camera back slowly for 40 feet. To prevent the slightest movement of the arm, Kathryn Grant was tied to a stake, remaining motionless and scarcely even breathing.” Awesome.) READ FULL STORY »

'SYTYCD' eliminated contestant Billy Bell talks injury: 'It's better to win or lose the competition and be able to dance, than...be like, oh, great, now my knee's completely messed up.'

Billy-Thhink-DanceImage Credit: Mathieu Young/FoxHe’s been labeled a freakish dancer and an androgynous dancer, but the day after being eliminated from So You Think You Can Dance, Billy Bell, 20, seemed to simply be a satisfied dancer. Surprisingly chipper, the contemporary dancer called up EW to chat about his injury, Nigel’s criticism of his decision to sit out, and the routine he’s hoping to reprise on tour. (You’d be surprised!)

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: How are you feeling?
BILLY BELL
: Yeah. I think Jose and I both felt kind of — I guess “relieved” isn’t the best word. It wasn’t a sad experience. We both had no regrets leaving the competition. I think we were both satisfied with everything that we had done, and how far we had grown. It’s kind of a strange, but happy, experience.

You did make it really far!
Yeah. And, also, we’re going to be back so soon doing the finale, and back again doing the tour. So it’s not like we’re gone for too long. READ FULL STORY »

I am Jane's pinching corset: We talk to the creator of 'Jane Austen's Fight Club'

It is a truth universally acknowledged that you do not talk about fight club. But Emily Janice Card, the writer-director of  “Jane Austen’s Fight Club,” a viral video (embedded below) that bloodies some petticoats by pitting prim and proper 19th-century ladies against one another, has found success in breaking that cardinal rule.

“Last year I was just joking around with a friend of mine and we were listing those iconic rules of Fight Club,” remembers Card, who also stars in the video as Mansfield Park’s Fanny. “And I started doing it in the voice of a proper, well-bred young English lady. I didn’t know exactly what to do with it, but it stayed in the back of my mind, and then over the course of the year, I came up with other things that might be funny in Jane Austen’s world, like ‘Why don’t you hit me as hard as you can at the Regency Ball?’” READ FULL STORY »

Terry O'Quinn signs on for Lifetime movie

Terry-O-QuinnImage Credit: Insidefoto/PR PhotosDid Emmy winner Terry O’Quinn prove himself such an interesting actor on Lost that fans will follow him anywhere? Like to Lifetime? The network confirms that he’s set to star in the upcoming true story Taken From Me: The Tiffany Rubin Story with Oscar nominee Taraji P. Henson (The Curious Case of Benjamin Button). You’re breathing easier already, right? He’ll play Mark Miller, the founder of the American Association for Lost Children, a nonprofit organization founded in 1987 that physically searches for and recovers missing children at no cost to the parents. Henson is Rubin, a woman who traveled to South Korea with the help of AAFLC to rescue her 6-year-old son, Kobe, after he was kidnapped by his biological father from their Queens, N.Y., home. These sounds like meaty, meaningful roles for both of them. Here’s hoping the writing and supporting cast are as good as they are.

Is O’Quinn an actor you’ll watch in anything?

'Mad Men' star Christina Hendricks steals man's ability to speak

Christina Hendricks can add “leaving men speechless” to her list of super powers. During the Mad Men star’s appearance on KTLA morning show yesterday, the mere reference to a bath (where should would presumably be…naked) turned poor Brian McFayden (yes, the former MTV VJ) into a blubbering, pre-pubescent mess: “You were drawing a bath…and making a bath for yourself, and I was just thinking…that’s awesome.” Watch the awkwardness unfold below: READ FULL STORY »
