Entertainment Weekly and CBS celebrate Comic-Con 'Fandemonium'

Comic-Con-EW-party_300.jpg Image Credit: Michael Buckner/Getty Images for EW(3) Entertainment Weekly and CBS invaded this year’s Comic-Con with a party purely for the fans. Readers got the chance to meet their favorite EW staffers, like Michael Ausiello and Jeff “Doc” Jensen, at the fiesta in San Diego’s Hard Rock Hotel. Fans were also treated to a Q&A by EW managing editor Jess Cagle with some of CBS’ best talent, including The Big Bang Theory‘s Johnny Galecki, Jim Parsons, and Kaley Cuoco as well as Daniel Dae Kim and Grace Park from this fall’s highly anticipated Hawaii Five-O and The Defenders‘ Jerry O’Connell. (Check out more photos from the party.) But the topic on everyone’s minds was the weekend’s ginormous pop culture convention. Says Criminal Minds‘ Kirsten Vangsness, “CBS was like, ‘Would you like to come to Comic-Con?’ And I was like, ‘What the what?! Yes please!’ This is so up my tree and I wanted to go so many years. But now I’m invited, and it’s just the greatest way to get baptized into the sweet, sweet waters Comic-Con.” NCIS star Pauley Perrette was in such a hurry to come down to the convention that she arrived still in character. “CBS had me shooting early this morning,” Perette told EW. “I was shooting NCIS and then I had to jump home, get my dogs ready, get my house ready, speed down to San Diego. I get down here and my friend is like, ‘You still have half a fake spider web tattoo on your neck.’ So, I actually just arrived. 'Big Brother' instant react: Did the pawn go home?

big-brotherImage Credit: Cliff Lipson/CBSFact: Past seasons of Big Brother have taught us that when a contestant is labeled a pawn, it doesn’t necessarily mean they are safe. Also a fact: Some people were hoping Matt would get backdoored this week after his annoying display of over confidence in the past few episodes. Yet another fact: The term “backdoored” makes me a little uncomfortable. All this in mind, what happened this week, you ask? [Stop reading now if you haven't watched Thursday's episode of Big Brother.]

Well, Monet was unsurprisingly sent home after a week as HOH Rachel’s main target. As Rachel reminded us in her message to the evictee, Monet was, like, trying get between Rachel and Brendon, and you, like, just don’t do that. Because, like, Rachel and Brendon are the real thing, and Brendon is, like, once in a lifetime. Like, worth more than $500,000.

At the beginning of the episode, it seemed as though Matt didn’t have a chance of going home, and that Monet was destined for eviction (…or death; I couldn’t tell judging by all the tears). But a house meeting organized by Rachel midway through the episode almost turned into a game-ending confrontation for the bragging genius. Yet, he somehow talked his way out of the situation. Gotta admit: That took skill.

And so another round of foolish voting once again saved the stronger player on the block from elimination. As awesome as Annie was (Saboteur and all), we always knew Rachel was going to rise to power if she wasn’t voted out early. We saw that happen this week. Will the same happen for Matt or even Britney (one of the original nominees for this week)?

The ongoing HOH competition will determine a lot about where the game goes from here. We find out on Sunday’s episode who wins that competition, and  those of us who spoil ourselves will find out sooner. But who has time for that? It’s not like I sit by my computer all day waiting to find out. I have so many better things to do, like… whatever. Stop judging me. Comic-Con: J.J. Abrams and Joss Whedon greet the faithful at EW's Visionaries panel

Abrams and Joss Whedon are responsible for some of the most obsessed-over and geeked-out-about pop culture creations of the past two decades, so it’s natural they would find an ideal audience at Comic-Con, the home away from home for the obsessive and geeky. Abrams’ long list of credits includes Felicity, Alias, Lost, Fringe, Mission: Impossible 3, and Star Trek. Whedon’s credits include Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Firefly, Serenity, Dollhouse, and Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog. Not surprisingly given those resumes, when the two took the stage at Comic-Con for EW’s Visionaries panel, hosted by our own Jeff “Doc” Jensen, the crowd welcomed them with raucous and adoring applause. Comic-Con: Bruce Willis, Helen Mirren, Karl Urban and Mary-Louise Parker talk sexy costumes and love for Pixar

red-comic-conThe cast of Red — the comedy thriller, out Oct 15, about a team of retired assassins thrown back into the business — stopped by the EW.com video suite at San Diego Comic-Con today, and they were in a lively mood. Helen Mirren, sporting a t-shirt commemorating the passing of legendary graphic novel writer Harvey Pekar, talked about shooting heavy-duty firearms, while Karl Urban waxed poetic on the sight of Mirren holding a sniper rifle. A loose and playful Bruce Willis give a brief explanation (of sorts) on the film’s plot, adapted from a Warren Ellis graphic novel. Then he attempted to figure out what sexy costume would best work on co-star Mary-Louise Parker, who for her part spent her time campaigning to star in a Pixar movie. 'Psych': Dulé Hill answers your questions, part 2

But they are coming,” Dulé Hill says, when asked what ’80s songs we can expect performed in Psych-Outs this season. So far, they’ve filmed one, with upcoming guest star Curt Smith from Tears for Fears. Songs that may make the cut: “Maybe ‘Total Eclipse of the Heart.’ Maybe ‘We Don’t Have to Take Our Clothes Off” by Jermaine Stewart. Maybe. Maybe is always the key word.” Here, Hill answers more questions from EW readers (and reveals that he auditioned for Cop Rock). You’ll find Part 1 of the interview here.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: LYDIA asks, “Which nickname that Shawn has given you is your favorite?”
DULÉ HILL: My favorite is from season 1, and that’s Gus Sillypants Jackson. That’s always stayed with me because it’s kinda close to Stoney Jackson, from The Insiders. Sillypants and Stoney. I feel like we could be related in some way.

The show is famous for its pop culture references. KAYLEIGH asks, “Anything you want referenced that hasn’t been yet?”
[Laughs] If anything, it would probably be Melvin Van Peebles’ Sweet Sweetback’s Baadasssss Song. He had this line, “What’s all this ‘we’ s—?” I would love to be able to say that, but obviously that’s gonna happen. Really and truly, most of the pop culture stuff that happens on the show, I have no idea what I’m talking about. That’s the writers and James Roday and Steve Franks. 'Saw 3D' teaser trailer: Hurry up and gross me out

I love gore — and not because I’m so cool, dark, twisty, and internally tortured. Not the case at all. In fact, I mostly just like testing my low tolerance for disgusting things (Can I keep my eyes open as I gag in repulsion? How long can I go without chillbumps appearing on my arms?)

The Saw franchise has always been great at delivering exactly what I wanted from it: sordid displays of inhumane acts that allow me to test my limit. But, I gotta say, the just-released teaser trailer for Saw 3D (the seventh in the series) isn’t looking so good.

For being the last installment, I expected a lot more. I watched the trailer five times trying to scare myself because I enjoy being scared, but no matter how much I tried, I got nothing. Maybe I’m becoming braver — and that’s not likely. Of course, they could be saving the really troubling material for the movie (set for an October release). Right?

Simon Cowell faces claims of 'barbarism' in British lawsuit: Brainstorm your own crazy case against a celebrity!

Simon-CowellImage Credit: Janet Mayer/PR PhotosMy name is Michael Slezak, and while I am not a judge, nor do I play one on TV, I cannot help but invoke the all-important “no one held a gun to your head” rule* ™ while reading a story in Variety about a British woman who is suing Simon Cowell and Britain’s Got Talent for $3.8 million, claiming “exploitation, humiliation, degradation, and barbarism.” I mean, look, there are two possibilities here: Either the plaintiff, Emma Amelia Pearl Czikai, saw the show before becoming a contestant, and therefore knew that humiliation was one of several possible outcomes. Or else she blindly marched onto that stage with no knowledge of reality TV, and received a brutal shock. Which would be kind of like me suing a steep mountain because I decided to rappel down it using yarn and a salad fork, and wound up with a broken leg.

The new 'TRON: Legacy' trailer is epic!

Geeks, rejoice! Disney unveiled the trailer for their hotly anticipated reboot/sequel TRON: Legacy at Comic-Con today, and let me tell you, it looks awesome. Not only do we get to see more of the light saber-esque motorcycle trails, glow-in-the-dark techno Frisbees, and sleek grid-filled sets, but the clip sets up the central relationship between father and son that TRON: Legacy will explore. 'So You Think You Can Dance' injuries: Is the show working its dancers too hard?

From week to week, we turn our televisions to Fox, prepared to take in another awesome episode of So You Think You Can Dance during this relatively solid season. But then, while watching the dancers’ introduction, we realize there’s one dancer missing from the pack. When Alex Freaking Wong injured his Achilles tendon two weeks ago — forcing him to bow out long before his time — it seemed a tragic anomaly. Then last week, Ashley Galvan hurt her rib, which led to her elimination. And as soon as Nigel announced Billy Bell had suffered a knee injury last night, it was clear: There’s something afoot in SYTYCD land.

Yes, we’ve seen injuries before on the show. (See: season 6′s Noelle and Ashleigh, season 4′s Jessica.) It comes with the territory — you don’t execute awe-inspiring lifts and ceiling-high jumps without knowing there are risks involved. But the fact that Billy’s knee problem marks the third injury in a row on this season of SYTYCD makes it impossible not to ask: Is the show simply working its cast too hard this year?
