'Growing Up Twisted': We're not going to take it. No, really.

growing-up-twistedImage Credit: Jeff Katz/A&EI can vividly remember, as a teenager, buying, and loving, Twisted Sister’s 1983 single “I Am (Am Me).” “Wow, Dee Snider’s right!” I thought, cranking up the volume to drown out the protesting cries of my parents and the neighbors’ dog. “I am me! Also? I am!”

Cut to 27 years later and the make up-loving, heavy metal vocalist has been given his own Osbournes-esque reality show, Growing Up Twisted, the first two episodes of which debuted last night on A&E. Alas, the “me” that “I am” will probably be watching something else next week. It’s not that Snider’s dislikeable. Quite the opposite. The Long Island-dwelling singer seems like a fine, upstanding citizen who, together with wife Suzette, has done a splendid job of raising four kids, Jesse, Shane, Cody, and Cheyenne, all of whom are now in either their teens or twenties.

But what is admirable in real-life can’t help but come across as a bit of a snooze in “reality” life. True, all concerned do their best to act outrageously — the first show featured both tattoo parlor visits and homemade pubic wigs. Frankly, though, the stars of Growing Up Twisted seem much too grown up already for the format.

Good for you! I do not know them, but I am quite surprised by how much I like the show. They seem really REALLY down to earth and REAL! Amazing family, if you ask me. As for Dee and Suzette, it taks a lot for people to stay together for so long, so good for them!

    • Noah

They reminded me alot of my family oddly enough.

  • Jennifer

Totally disagree. I lol’d at some parts and had tears in my eyes at others. They seem like a great family.

Could not agree more. I couldn’t pull myself away. Laughed & cried! He may be famous but from those 2 episodes I don’t think they flawnt it. Can’t wait for more! Would love to see the HD shop I have heard Dee ownes with Billy Joel.

The E! Channel had a program a while back about Rock Wives, where they intereviewed Suzette. I thought she was fabulous, and loved the way she had her head on straight with regards to dealing with her marriage and the music business. Dee is a very lucky man.

In a way, I’m glad the show doesn’t live up to the usual reality-show measures of success. (Shock! Horror! Manufactured Drama!) If I were the Snider family, I would take it as a compliment that, reality-wise, they’re snooze-worthy.

  • Dee

    Loved it!

What was the name of that reality show from a few years ago tha was a singing competition among children of rock stars? Jesse was in it and was quite obnoxious, but not as pompous as his parents were in that show.

I thought the show was so funny and so touching. People…they’ve been married for 34 years !! That’s amazing, especially in the line of business they are in. I thought their kids, especially Cody were hilarious. Suzette is gorgeous and what a bod…holy crap, I thought I was a hot grandma, but she’s got me beat by a mile !! Little Logan Lane is adorable and when her daddy sang to her and started crying…I was a mess…so touching. What a cool family…way nicer than the Osbournes..I will for sure keep watching.

  • Dede

Really enjoyed the show, I agree, laughed aloud and cried, and really enjoyed seeing that a family is so close, and using laughter constantly. Will be watching for more. Enjoyed the two episodes that, to me, didn’t seem scripted.

I remember how Tipper Gore tried to warn us that listing to bands like Twisted Sister would turn us into the devil’s minions. Yet he is been married for many years to the same woman, has 4 kids that seem to be pretty decent kids, he has a grand baby and his son and his wife were married and are raising their kid, he is a big softie granddad..in otherwise a normal family. Yet look how messed up Tipper’s life is. Its called karma.

    I like Gene and Sugardaddieshookup

Twisted only made 2 albums , only 1 made any money. How has he survived? How does he keep his family afloat?

    • junebug

Paul, you should check your info. They made more than 2 albums. I owned five. He has other jobs besides “being a rock star”. Know what you’re talking about before you make a statement about it.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE this show but I want to put that little bi tch in check.( Cheyenne or whatever her name is ) she is a nasty mean little witch. She not only needs to get her butt kicked but she needs to STOP with her horrible attitude. When she told her school about the boxing match resulting in CPS and RUINED the chance of adoption. UGHHH what a horrible girl.
