3-D camcorder hits the consumer market

Filed under: Gadgets and tagged: , ,

HDC-SDT750Panasonic announced today that its first consumer 3-D camcorder will be available come October, meaning that this fall, with $1,400 and a dream, you can make a better 3-D movie than M. Night Shyamalan.

The HDC-SDT750 uses a 3-D conversion lens, which films separate side-by-side images for the right and left eyes, which is great…if you already have a 3-D TV. Otherwise, your playback options are pretty limited.

Could a camcorder be the big thing that pushes at-home 3-D into the mainstream? I’m skeptical; it’s still a substantial investment for an entire set-up, and I’m not convinced that watching, oh, home movies in 3-D necessarily improves the experience. (Yay, unsteady shots of people waving, now in another dimension!) But the oh-wow factor is undeniable.

Bring it, PopWatchers. Are amateur James Camerons going to be flooding the Sundances of the future with their 3-D homebrew masterpieces?
