Any man who tried to grow facial hair in college will tell you: It’s tough to pull off a Van Dyke. It’s half-mustache and half-goatee, which are both things that get little respect in this awful clean-shaven era. So let’s give this to Jon Stewart, who debuted some silver-dappled facial hair on last night’s Daily Show: he looks pretty darn okay. His beard bears a slight resemblance to Brad Pitt’s gone-but-not-forgotten growth, but Stewart’s facial hair actually looks like something a normal person would grow.
Stewart made all the requisite jokes. (See video embedded after the jump.) They’re making a sequel to The Faculty! He’s actually a Japanese snow monkey! He dipped his chin in marshmallow fluff! (Notably, he did NOT make the seemingly obvious remark about being Jon Stewart’s evil Mirror Universe duplicate. Instead, he claimed to be Jon Stewart’s evil cousin, Wario. Sorry, Mirror Universe Spock, your meme is dead.)

I’m more disturbed by what appears to be a jaunt in the Mystic Tan bed gone awry than the facial hair.

Its not as homeless looking at Pitt’s was, and its not as goobery as Maynard T. Krebbs, so I’ll give it a “meh” too. I actually like that its salt-n-pepper colored like his hair. Sometimes the facial hair keeps the color longer, right?
I loved Craig Ferguson’s description of Pitt’s beard as “hobo pubes”.
Sometimes the beard does keep its color longer – but I think the opposite is true more often. My own experience, for example…
I just watched the episode, and it’s like he grew the beard just to have like 20 easy jokes! (though they were mostly very funny)

I was waiting for some acknowledgment of his hellacious TAN! LOL…I’d gotten so used to his usual pasty self that it was more surprising than the goatee.

Colbert joked about his tan and showed a color chart for the ‘Tanning pool’ to see what color won. Maybe Stewart decided to avoid looking like Colbert was copying his joke.

Well I don’t hate it on Jon Stewart and it is not as out of hand as Brad Pitt’s got. I’d say we give this round to Jon too.

Haha sorry Michael no offense. It because I’ve watched Stewart since I began high school and I’m now 24 and I just never saw him aging because he looked exactly the same and then he goes on a 2 week vacation and its just a really jarring contrast.
As much as I love Jon Stewart I could not take him seriously with his new beard. I was half expecting Colbert to be sporting one too.
I think he is the same witty, intelligent man he always was who just happens to look rather dashing with facial hair.
