'Green Lantern' at Comic-Con: The footage packs a punch, Ryan Reynolds charms the crowd

ryan-reynoldsImage Credit: Kevin Winter/Getty ImagesWarner Bros. used its 90-minute panel at Comic-Con to introduce Green Lantern to the geek masses by showing some footage and bringing stars Ryan Reynolds, Blake Lively, Mark Strong, and Peter Sarsgaard to chat up the DC Comics superhero saga about a pilot recruited to an intergalactic police force armed with mystical power rings. Perhaps the moment in the tease of film that had the greatest buzz-impact on the audience was when Reynolds used his power ring to conjure a giant green fist to punch out bad guys, evoking a classic image from the comics. The reel suggested a movie of cosmic scope. There were glimpses of other members of the Green Lantern Corps. as well as a look at the planet of Oa, home to the Guardians of the Universe, which oversees the emerald-clad peacekeepers.

Director Martin Campbell (Casino Royale) talked about Green Lantern’s costume and even referenced its unveiling on the cover of EW’s Comic-Con issue. The helmer was excited by the design though he also called it “a work in progress.… It will eventually look very cool.”

Ryan Reynolds –- sporting a Green Lantern ring that he wore during production (he gave it away to a contest winner) — charmed the estimated crowd of 6,000 by satisfying a young boy’s request to recite Green Lantern’s oath. In a grave voice, Reynolds intoned: “In brightest day, in blackest night/No evil shall escape my sight/Let those who worship evil’s might/Beware my power…Green Lantern’s light!” The crowd roarded. In an awkward moment, Reynolds disclosed that [SPOILER ALERT!] a character from the Green Lantern mythos named Parallax will appear in the film. Then, nervously, he added “I better be allowed to say that.” Judging from the silence from his director and producers, it appeared that he wasn’t.

The Green Lantern panel was noteworthy for what wasn’t announced. There had been rumors that Warner Bros. would use the opportunity to announce a Wonder Woman movie. That didn’t happen.

Between this Thor and Captain America we’re getting 3 superhero films that are definately not like anything we’ve seen before. I hope they are all good, even the Lantern one. If it’s done right it could be pretty awesome. Thor will be better though. (I have no basis for that statement but I like Thor and want it to be good). But please no “Team Ring” vs. “Team Hammer” or “Team Shield” vs “team Mjolnir”.

I thought that hal jordan became parallax? I am confused. Could someone help me out?

    • Z. Abram

Parallax is a powerful cosmic fear entity which possesed Hal Jordan, turning him evil.

    • darclyte

I had read a synopsis of the movie online a few days ago and it mentioned Parallax, and I thought that it was a mistake because Hector Hammond is the “big bad.” I guess there will be room for 2. I SOOO can’t wait. GL is my fav character. Did anyone see Nathan Fillion walking around in t GL logo shirt? Too funny!

      • EEPspaceD

I think Parallax is going to be passed on from Abin Sur, then to Hector, and will ultimately end up in Sinestro by the end of the film.

    • mike

      he did become parallax

    • yemi

Originally, Parallax was just Hal’s new name after he went evil. To redeem him later, they decided that the whole Parallax incident wasn’t actually Hal’s fault, and that Parallax was a giant yellow parasite.

I don’t think they’d have Hal go evil in the first movie, so this will probably be the parasite version.

  • therealeverton

My limited DC knowledge concurs with you, however he wasn’t the only one ( I think) and since it’s a movie and deosn’t need to be an exact duplication of the comics it doesn’t really matter. Plus there’s no reason that he can’t be a villain and Hal has to fight him in his head, kinda Superman 3 like, and / or other heroes have to help beat him. As long as it means all that “can’t work against yellow” bull is explained and booted it’s ok. Not sure what’s lamer, the yellow, Superman’s “glasses” disguise or Kryptonite.

    • Z. Abram

true. I think it would be cool to have sinestro and parallax form an alliance.

    • clique84

As to the Superman glasses disguise, have you watched the scene in Superman where Christopher Reeve took of the glasses and straighten his shoulders? Thats how the disguise works…

If the fact that Parallax is going to be in this movie is something that they didn’t want getting out, then they’ve been doing a lousy job of keeping it a secret. Probably eight to nine comic book themed movie websites have articles mentioning that part.

But not surprising. Easiest trick in the world is getting EW to believe obviously bullshit.

    Hey EW…got your nose.

See? Have of EW’s staff is running around frantically looking for their noses.

  • John Zee

    Damn typo gremlins. half*

  • Liz Lemon

I just want to see the Deathly Hallows clip they showed.
If a Wonder Woman movie does ever get made, I hope WB does make it. They’re at the top as far as Superhero movies go…evidence: The Dark Knight.

  • Snarf

Reynolds is all sorts of yum.

  • sil

are any of these videos going to be posted? or do i have to continue to watch illegal filmings of them in the sketchy parts of the internet. i feel dirty.

  • Eric

Parallax has been known to be in the movie for some time.

  • Brad

Parallax shouldn’t even be in the first movie. They should concentrate on establishing Hal Jordan as a competent pilot who doesn’t panic in aerial situations. Then, it should be about the yellow impurity that affects all Green Lantern rings. Hector Hammond might be a good villian but what about establishing all the other colored rings too.

    • EEPspaceD

The yellow impurity comes form Parallax; Parallax will infect Sinestro, and that is the birth of the yellow ring.

      • Z. Abram

Yes. Hector can discover Parallax, Sinestro can be infected, and in the next film (if there is one) Hal can get infected, go berserk, destroying Oa, and set up John Stewart or Kyle Rayner, or heck, even Guy Gardner to take his place. Hal’s fall can be a catalyst for Star Sapphire to gain her powers. In the third film (as they’ve said three is their goal) Hal can be redeemed, and the Corps rebuilt.

  • mike

cant wait for Guy Gardner!…Im thinking Sean William Scott..Stifler is Guy Gardner without a ring

  • michael

Typical EW. If an extra from Twilight had popped in to use the toilet, they’d have given us a full report. The phenomenon that is Harry Potter makes it’s first and last appearance at Comic Con and……..nothing. You’re about as relevant to pop culture as Mel Gibson would be as an advocate of the Anti-Nazi League.

    • Jeff Jensen

Your analogy is pathetic. For the record, they showed the trailer, and a little bit more footage, and nothing more. Go away, you troll.

  • Deb

Ryan is hot so Green Lantern will rock :P

  • Phillip McCann

Where is the footage? When will it get posted?
Green Lantern was the first stuff I ever read when I was 6. Have been waiting almost 60 years to finally see him in action – how much longer do I have to wait?

  • Phillip McCann

Actually, I meant I’ve been waiting 50 years, but you get the point. C’mon already!
