A washed-up writer whose marriage is on the rocks. A young, beautiful muse, played by a fresh-faced ingenue, who inspires said washed-up writer. And a series of quasi-comic romantic encounters inevitably — yet gleefully — undermined by the auteur’s ironic fatalism. Ding-ding-ding! What is a Woody Allen movie?
Correct. The trailer for Allen’s You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger is crafted to echo the most famous of the director’s themes.
Every detail of the trailer feels rather familiar. Except the voiceover. Whose voice is that, and why does it seem so dissonant with the look and music in the rest of the trailer? Allen’s voice itself would’ve been a better choice.
But are you intrigued? Is Woody’s latest a Vicky Cristina or a Melinda and Melinda?

I don’t think you can predict a Woody Allen movie until you actually see it. Out of this great cast, I am suprised Freda Pinto was the one I was happiest to see. I agree, the voice over is weird and Naomi Watts seems to overact in every seen they show with her in it.

That’s Ricky Jay’s voice, I think. Most likely meant to bring to mind Magnolia. Woody does Paul Thomas Anderson?
Sorry, don’t know who it is, but that is definitely NOT Ricky Jay.
Woody Allen has an unmatched talent for getting Oscar nominations for his movie’s stars, but it’s no secret that he hasn’t made a must-see film since the late 1980′s or early ’90′s. It would be nice if he could come up with one final classic – something equal to “Manhattan” or even another crazy comedy like “Sleeper” – before he retires… something that a mass audience (including younger viewers!) actually goes to see, and enjoys, and helps make Allen a relevant filmmaker again.
The voiceover sounds like ron howard for arrested development haha
The voiceover is the same voiceover Allen used in “Vicky Cristina Barcelona”
Wow- that looks… boring!
Naomi Watts??? i’m in
I’d check this one out for the fantastic cast alone (although if I were looking for a Woody Allen stand-in actor, I don’t think Josh Brolin would be in my top 200).
Obviously, you can’t really tell until the movie comes out, but there doesn’t seem to be very much new or exciting with this trailer (other than the cast). This looks like at least another dozen of his comedies.
This looks great
god knows what kind of comedies people like?
I am “young” and look forward to this.
The voiceover sounds a little like the one from Vicky Cristina. And whatever Woody Allen does, his diehard fans are bound to love it.
Looks fantastic. The actors look thrilled to be in a Woody (as they should be), with Anthony Hopkins in particular relishing the chance to play an aging Lothario who makes a fool of himself. Undoubtedly one of the best films of the year.
I loved Vicky Christina Barcelona, which gave me hope that Woody still has much left to give us. I have my fingers crossed on this one.
For many years critics have been far too hard on Woody — undoubtedly because he raised the bar so high so quickly. Stranger is most witty and enjoyable. And the line “no pun intended” is deliciously out of role and hilarious. Don’t be so hard on Woody or us Woody lovers.
