B.J. Novak promoted: No word yet on 'The Office Infinity' website

bj-novak-officeImage Credit: Mitchell Haaseth/NBCReason No. 2,137 to love The Office: It’s the most egalitarian show on television. According to Variety, B.J. Novak has re-signed to play conniving Ryan for two more years. Simultaneously, the 30-year-old actor, who’s written and directed Office episodes, will be promoted to executive producer. Novak’s not alone in his status as a renaissance talent: Mindy Kaling (Kelly) and Paul Lieberstein (Toby), for example, also play a significant role in the creative direction of the sitcom.

More than any other show, The Office crew seems like a troupe, in the old-fashioned theatrical sense. (Not unlike Second City, where Steve Carell, Kate Flannery, Craig Robinson once sharpened their skills.) A funny idea is a funny idea, no matter where it comes from, and the typical firewalls between producer, writer, and actor seem much more permeable in Scranton. No wonder no one flinched when Ryan the one-time intern was made a corporate boss at the end of season 3. That’s how this show rolls.

Do you think the show’s commitment to Novak promises more screen-time for Ryan, especially now that Carell has announced his intention to leave the show? Could Ryan possibly compete with Dwight for the right to fill Michael’s chair? More importantly, as a hot-shot exec producer, do you think Novak will dabble in drugs, get $200 haircuts and insist that the rest of the cast file their expense reports online?

So I guess they definitely are continuing this show after Steve Carell leaves. I loved this show through its first 3 seasons. It was never the same after that. I still watch it because each episode does have its moments. But i really wish that they wouldn’t drag this show out until I don’t feel like watching it anymore… like what happened with ‘The Simpsons’.

    yea thats not gonna happen

  • Bobby’s Robot

They could probably get a whole season out of Dwight, Jim and Ryan jockeying to replace Michael.

If a show is still entertaining, i watch. I don’t care about “purism” or what other fanatics think/say.

As much as I would love this show to never end, I think that the show should go out with dignity and I think that next season would be the best place for the show to end. I really don’t think there is a show without Steve Carell. And, I really don’t see Ryan taking over Michael Scott’s position…we’ve already seen Ryan in a position of leadership and it just wasn’t that interesting to me.

But Ryan has conquered his addiction problem this time! Shouldn’t he been given a second chance?

We believe in rehabilitation, don’t we?

Though I’d prefer to see the show end when Steve Carrell leaves, I have to admit that Ryan’s quiet transformation into a hipster was a bright spot in a pretty dismal season.

Which is to say, one more Carrell-less season might be okay if there is more of hipster Ryan. Emphasis, though, on the “might.”

I really enjoyed his transtion to hipster.

I was just about to say…shame on EW for not posting a picture of Ryan in one of his hilarious hipster outfits from last season to accompany this article.

Well, he might require them to set up a Woof account.

the office without steve carrell will still be twice as good as most of the other generic formula sitcoms on network tv. give it a chance before you wish for its demise. and just because steve says he’s leaving after this season doesn’t mean he will… they may make him an offer he can’t refuse ;)

PS – if you like the office, check out BBC’s the IT Crowd — it’s the new office and it is fantastic!!!

  • Jake

B.J. Novak doesn’t make me laugh

  • Dubya

Great show but Richdating.net was better
