Grace Park takes a man-made role on 'Hawaii Five-0'

hawaii-five-0-grace-parkImage Credit: Mario Perez/CBSYou know you’ve broken into the boys’ club when you can’t seem to stop taking roles originally played by guys. Grace Park first gained attention while playing Lieut. Sharon “Boomer” Valerii in Sci Fi’s remake of Battlestar Galactica. (Boomer from the 1978 series was portrayed by Herbert Jefferson Jr.) And now Park will be pulling the sex swap all over again this fall, as Det. Kono Kalakaua in CBS’ reboot of Hawaii Five-0. (Kono was played by the burly actor Zulu in the 1968 original.)

Park attributes all the gender bending not to her special brand of gravitas, but to Hollywood’s zeal for remakes and the need to inject them with modern sensibilities. “Back in the day, we used to have much more male-centric shows,” she says. “You still have male-heavy shows, but having a woman in there adds a new dimension.” That said, she sees plenty of ways to exploit this trend: “My next goal is to do J.R. from Dallas. Then maybe Larry from Three’s Company.” Note to network executives: Please make this happen.

Loved her responses. Definitely make the Three’s Company one happen!

The fact that she now has her sights on playing JR just makes her even more awesome in my book.

I don’t know who this girl is, but her sense of humor makes me want to.

Grace Park is so beautiful and just so great. She deserved an Emmy nomination for the final season of “Battlestar Galactica”, the awesome episode where “Boomer” impersonates “Athena” to escape. Maybe now on network (crap) she will finally be recognized for the great actress she is. (She was also pretty awesome on “The Cleaner”.)

I can’t wait for this show. Sign me up for the Grace Park fan club! Love that she went with Larry as opposed to the obvious Jack.

Just another reason for me to never watch this show.

Maybe she can be Jack from Will & Grace.

  • Jack

As long as she’s always on TV, Grace can play any character she wants.

  • Mark

I want to see Grace Park as J.R. but only if she struts around in most of her scenes wearing a ten gallon hat.

Hot woman but Teacherfriendfinder was better

The gender switch is fine with me. I like her, and I like that she’s been added to the show. And I appreciate that there will be two Asian leads on this program now — her and Daniel Dae Kim. But she’s not Native Hawaiian or even a Pacific Islander. Koreans and Hawaiians are not interchangeable. Sure, she could “pass,” but I don’t know if that’s a good thing. On the levels of both fidelity to the source material and respect towards the community in which this show is representing, they’ll need to address this somehow. I don’t think it’s something worth boycotting (i.e. The Last Airbender), but it is something that the show-runners should at least think about when rounding out the remaining cast members, if they haven’t already. In the few episodes of “Hawaii Five-O” I’ve seen, I was actually pretty surprised in the way they made great use of Hawai’i's local culture and were actually pretty respectful of local issues — see the ep, “Stranger in Our Own Land.”
