Image Credit: Paul Shiraldi/TeenNickBecause Teen Nick only seems to air commercials for Proactiv, Education Con-nec-tion, and its own programming, I’ve seen the promos for Degrassi: The Boiling Point many more times than I’d care to admit. In my defense, they have been playing every Degrassi episode ever in preparation for the new season. That means Paige’s rape, Manny’s abortion, Emma’s eating disorder, the shooting, Craig’s drug problem, etc. How could I not watch?
Of course reliving these old episodes just makes me miss Paige, Marco, Jimmy, and Craig, but to be fair the younger kids at Degrassi Community School know how to cook up a good scandal, too: last season we got crystal meth use, vampire fantasies, the morning-after pill, and a HPV scare. So even though I’m missing the originals, I’m still counting down the hours until new episodes of my favorite guilty, not-so-secret pleasure, thanks to a deliciously dramatic trailer: A mysterious new student! Little Claire gets a trendy haircut (and perhaps a new love interest?)! Riley gets comfortable with PDA! Fiona gets slapped! The school goes into Lockdown mode! Oh, Canada.
It all kicks off tonight with a 2-hour premiere, Degrassi Takes Manhattan: The Heat Is On, where our favorite Canadians land in our fair city for a summer to remember. (Check out EW’s exclusive clip featuring a cameo by ANTM‘s Jay Manuel.) And now that I’ve seen a more detailed promo for tonight’s episode, there is an entirely new reason to tune in. For those of you who aren’t regular viewers, the last two people to kiss are brother and sister. Yes, that would mean tonight we get a big serving of incest (Degrassi: It goes there). Declan and Fiona have always seemed creepy close, so I’m glad the show is exploring what viewers have been thinking for some time. But, this episode still gets an EWWWWW.com tag because of the huge ick factor. Is this the most shocking Degrassi storyline yet?
Will you be watching Degrassi tonight, PopWatchers? Or are you yearning for the days of Liberty and JT, Emma and Sean, and Manny and Craig (…and Ashley)?
This show should have ended when Emma and Manny graduated. I thought maybe because I’m older that I’m too old to enjoy this but my 17 year old cousin who has watched forever thinks it’s terrible now.

My favorite part was the “fake” Toby. They couldn’t bother getting the real one (or he turned them down) so they threw in a fake look-a-like one like in Ed Wood’s Plan 9 From Outer Space!
Hilarious.
But yeah, it was *way* better than the Hollywood one, but that’s not much of a compliment.
The best thing about it: at least Spinner had something to do.

they def had cooler names in degrassi jr. high however i am a next generation kind of person and even though the originals of the next generation are all gone now except maybe spinner (the promos have him in it but hes not featured in the theme) the show isnt bad… but i do miss things like emma meeting a creepy guy from the internet in a hotel room and snake almost killing him and manny and craig jt spinner and jay and SEAN CAMERON!!!!!!!!!

I understand about the commercials. I spent last summer being assaulted with the same Education Connection commercial (I can still sing it from memory), as well as the commercial for last years Degrassi movie. It go to the point where I had to watch it, even though I have no familiarity with the show. Stupid advertising.
It premiered up yonder in Canada a few days ago, and as a sometimes Degrassi watcher, I can say it was cute. And I appreciated the Can references…the celebrity blogger Lainey isn’t known in the states is she? And any Canadian viewer will instantly recognize some of the sets as the interior of Muchmusic in Toronto. But I too miss the old days. Sigh. But the new season looks like fun.

Man this episode was stupid! (Emma and Spinner are a ugly couple)…Emma dont feel like a rebound?? shoot she must’ve been desperate.. like didnt she need kelley just to finish her bike tour, that tells you something right there. And spinner he dont know what he whats….i give it less than 6 months ok cause trust me i wasted 2 hours of my life watching this episode when i thought it was gonna be good, there goes my monday night….and Declan’s sister needs a life. I pray to God tomorrows episode is SO MUCH BETTER.

I honestly hope the more recent Degrassi seasons, as a whole, resemble the more neo-liberal aspects of Canadian culture.
