Chris Nolan says he'd love to do a Bond film

nolan-james-bondImage Credit: Karen Ballard; Stephen VaughanJust when things couldn’t get a whole lot worse for the James Bond franchise, 007 fans may finally have something to get excited about. As the next installment in Daniel Craig’s super-spy saga sits idle waiting for the cash-strapped MGM to sort through its financial woes, Chris Nolan told the audience at last night’s London premiere of his new film, Inception, that he would love to do a Bond film. According to the BBC, the big-budget visionary said, “I’ve loved the Bond films since I was a kid. For me, they’re always about the expansiveness of cinema. The first Bond films set up infinite possibilities of about the world they create. I’d love to do a Bond film.”

Putting aside the fact that Sam Mendes (American Beauty) has been attached to direct the next Bond film, how awesome would it be to see a guy like Nolan — someone who we already know can push the boundaries of action spectacle — tackle the franchise? Maybe he could give Bond amnesia à la Memento, or load it with truly unexpected twists and turns like in The Prestige, or better yet, finally give the series a really kick-ass villain again — someone like Heath Ledger’s Joker from The Dark Knight? Come to think of it, this could be exactly what it takes to not only goose the nearly-50-year-old franchise, but get its struggling studio back on its feet again.

Of course, all of this could wind up leading to nothing. But it’s fun to think about, right? After all, us Bond fans could use some good news. What do you think, is a Chris Nolan Bond something you’d want to see? And if not, who would do it better? Quentin Tarantino, Ridley Scott, the Wachowskis, Darren Aronofsky?

a quentin tarantino bond movie would probably be pretty good too

      Sounds GOOD!

It would suck and I love Tarantino but you need someone who will respect the general ethos of the franchise. I don’t want twenty minutes of expositional dialouge between Bond and M.

He’s a better pick than Mendes, I think. It’s pure conjecture, though, since it will be many years before he’s free. That said, it might take that long to get another Bond movie out. It would be a shame to not get the most out of Craig.

    This needs to happen!

    • Gabby

OMG!! It does! Chris Nolan and Bond!!! MATCH MADE IN HEAVEN!!

    • BlackIrish4094

I concur. This would be like peas and carrots…

  • gayle

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Daniel Craig is and will forever own James Bond.

    • Alex

That doesn’t mean Nolan couldn’t direct him as Bond…..

People said the same thing about Sean Connery and Roger Moore when they were Bond. However, I’m pretty sure Daniel Craig would be pleased to work with a director like Nolan.

  • Henry

Oh, please, Eon Productions! Allow Nolan to elevate this franchise!

  • Alex

I think the studio would be remiss to not sign Nolan up for a 007 outing for after he finishes Batman 3.

      Please forgive my grammar fail.

The last two Bond movies have been great, but what the last ten or so needed was a truly “good” villian. I would love to see a major star like Clooney or Liam Neeson play the heavy.

    • Jenn

      Clooney? No.

Robert Carlyle was very good. It’s more the writing for the villains, (deliberate and actually ok for the 2 Craig Bonds which were far more about recreating the onscreen Bond & an organised villainy than single 1 off baddies.

      Carlyle was awesome

I read years ago, during the Brosnan days, that Connery was considering being a Bond villain, but that he was waiting for the right script. I know he’s supposedly “retired” now. But PLEASE, let Chris Nolan take this over and convince Connery to step in!!!

      • Brian

Ever see Connery as the villian in “The Avengers?” Pee Yew!

      • BC

No – but I imagine the script blew. Nolan’s script most likely would not.

  • T Diddy

I’ve always thought Tony Scott would make an excellent Bond flick. There were rumors that QT was going to write Casino Royale, and he’d direct, but…that never happened.
I’ll kill to see a Tony Scott Bond movie.

    • BlackIrish4094

I like Tony Scott but he’s been into all those “quick cut” style directing of late so maybe not.

  • G

He would make a great Bond film. With Daniel Craig and Nolan as well … good stuff.

(Sorry to nitpick, but it should be “we Bond fans could use some good news” not “us”; take “Bond fans” out of the sentence and “us” makes no sense.)

  • Marten

It could be cool, but first I want the Sam Mendes version.

  • Cue

I think a Quentin Tarantino Bond film would be incredibly. The way he weaves stories is amazing. He or Nolan would be my choices.

  • Crystal

    Yes, please.

  • A.F. for EW

Christopher Nolan and the Bond franchise would be an inspired pairing! Count me as being strongly in favor of this idea!!

  • Briana

I think my heart stopped working…this would be fantastic!

  • TF

The bad guy also needs a good henchman. I can’t remember the last good henchman.
