Johnny Weir announces break from ice skating. So not fabulous.

Johnny-WeirImage Credit: Justin LubinQuel horreur! Ice diva/possible future Dancing With the Stars contestant Johnny Weir will be taking a competitive break from ice skating. At least for 2010-11 season. The reason? Weir wants a year to “explore and reinvent [himself] as an athlete and artist.” In his time off the ice, Weir will focus on new projects like his new single Dirty Love, a fashion line, and his memoirs. He’ll also be filming season two of his Sundance Channel reality series Be Good Johnny Weir.

Even though he’ll be working on many new projects, Weir definitely won’t disappear from the ice completely. During his hiatus, he plans to create a new skating image so he “can perform in a way that is both unique and inspiring.” Have you seen him skate? I’d say he’s pretty unique and stayed true to his Johnny Weir style.

What do you think, PopWatchers? Will you miss seeing Johnny on the ice this next year? And what inspiring things do you think he’ll come up with? I’d be completely content with another Lady Gaga tribute. And what about his new projects? Which one are you most excited about? Take to the comments!

Aw, I wanted to see Johnny skate in LA. But I will be watching his show; he’s hilarious.

You still might – he said he’s not competing this year, he didn’t say he’s not performing. I saw him this spring in NYC, he was wonderful :) And I was lucky enough to meet him, what a sweetheart. Could not be more gracious and kind.

UGH!! Why is it when a athlete or ‘celebrity’ is good at one thing and people enjoy watching them do that one thing, they think the public wants to see more of them doing other things?!?!? Let this one trick pony Ice Queen fade into oblivion like everyone before her that thought they were greater than they actually are!

Plenty of people want to see more of Johnny. He recently won the NewNowNext Award for “Most Addictive Reality Star”, and everywhere he goes he’s met by hordes of fans. You clearly don’t like him, but lots of people love him. Deal with it.

Also, the fact that you referred to Johnny as a “Queen” and “her” tells me everything I need to know about your opinion.

Seconded. Love his skating, love his show, love him. Can’t wait to see what he does next.

I think it sucks, but i also don’t think he’ll ever be judged fairly competetively. He was totally robbed of an Olympic medal.

I respectfully disagree. That Japanese skater was incredible and deserved his bronze. I will say, however, that Johnny deserved 4th place. I also wonder whether he will ever be judged fairly as a skater.

Johnny is doing what Evan is doing. He is taking this season off. No one is mad at Evan for taking the season off and they get mad at Johnny for doing other things after getting robbed at the Olympics? I don’t blame him. He deserves a break if he wants one to explore other things and I thing he should do what is best for him not anyone else. He will be successful in anything he does. He is talented and is full of potential. LET HIM BE!

Good for him. It’s insane that everyone outside the skating world thinks all male skaters are gay, while inside the skating world, being openly gay is discouraged and costs deserving skaters titles. Now that Weir has made a name for himself, why should he put up with their bigotry? He’s taking a stand for himself and all the other gay skaters who have to play to an “image.”

After his reading comments earlier this week about fur, I think he’s a major doucheskate.

I was waiting for him to announce it officially. Everything he’s said since after Vancouver have been huge signs that he wouldn’t compete anymore, definitely not this up coming season. It is sad, but I believe this is the right decision for him. He is getting old for competitive figure skating, and his chances of being judged fairly are poor, no matter how hard he tried anyway.
I wish him the best of luck in finding something that is long term to take the place of competitive skating. It must be pretty hard to have to leave something that is, basically, your whole life, and find something new and start all over again.
I just wish any of the skaters still competing were as interesting and appealing as Weir. I was already missing Lambiel, I will miss Johnny Weir even more.

He is the last skater to make me cry at his long program Vancouver. I hate the new scoring system for robbing the passion from figure skating. I wish Johnny the best, however I will not keep my hopes up for him returning just as I can not “get” the new scoring system that screwed Johnny. Speedy sucks!

  • purrmonsta

Johnny will continue to skate on his own terms and explore his options for a life with other interests that expand his creative expression. He will rock at whatever he does. The competitive skating world has not treated him fairly in the last few years, and perhaps some absence will make their hearts grow fonder of Johnny? I hope he returns triumphantly with some awesome new moves for Sochi 2014.

you are a fablous skater, great line of clothes, love the makeup. Wish you could skate on tv all the time.may whole family loves to watch you. I am 62 and I think you are a exceptionally talented person.

  • CajunLill

I just love all things Johnny Weir. Yes, he definitely got robbed by the Olympic hierarchy-total rip-off. They gave medals to skaters that fell down-talk about the fix was in!!! Will miss him being a competitive skater but, whatever he does, I’m
    there he deserves it.
