The Queen adds crystal-encrusted 3-D glasses to the royal jewels

Queen-Elizabeth-IIImage Credit: Chris Jackson-Pool/Getty ImagesLast spring, President Obama presented her with the gift of an iPod. Today, while Queen Elizabeth was visiting Pinewood Studio’s outpost in Canada, she slipped on a pair of 3-D eyeglasses. If this keeps up, pretty soon 84-year-old Elizabeth II will be playing Rock Band 2 while video-chatting with Prince Charles on their new iPhones.

The Queen didn’t don any old pair of 3-D glasses, by the way; her’s were encrusted with Swarovski crystals forming the letter “Q” on either side, looking like something T-Pain might wear to the Grammys. But, judging from video snippets of the event posted on telegraph.com.uk.com, it’s hard to imagine she was all that impressed by what she saw in 3-D in Toronto: It was some sort of costumed Bollywood-style dance number that didn’t have even one giant blue Na’vi Princess in it. Personally, if I was going to show the Queen of England a sample of 3-D filmmaking, I would have picked something a little different. Piranha 3D, perhaps?

Because you have nothing better to do today, Popwatchers, what 3-D movies would you show the sovereign leader of Great Britain?

My first thought would be “The Queen” if it were in 3D. I think that would be wonderfully meta.

But, in reality, I think she’d get a kick out of some 3D Pixar film or short.

    PUKE!

Screw her and her stolen jewels!

  • Spud

Wow. The Queen is looking pretty fly.

    • M

Agreed. She’s pretty hip for an 84-year-old monarch.

  • DFSF

Why in the world would they monogram them with a Q?

    • C

      For Queen?

      • nodnarb

I know about a hundred queens who would kill for those glasses.

      • Ceballos

…or I could see Quentin Tarantino rocking those glasses.

Her Majesty the Queen already had an iPod before the current US president gave her one — loaded with hours of himself speaking and his wife making weird noises in the background. Prince Andrew gave Her Majesty an iPod several years ago, which she uses to listen to Gilbert & Sullivan and other old Broadway scores, which is a favorite of hers. The Obama White House didn’t bother to research this, the way it didn’t bother to check on whether giving former Prime Minister Gordon Brown a set of dvds that won’t play on British dvd machines was a good idea for a PM that is legally blind and can’t watch movies whatever Region Coding they have.

      Get over yourself, you sycophant.

      • flipsy

        I second Julia’s comment.

    • Christie

I think it’s pretty obvious that Julia and flipsy are the typical Obama-worshiping people who can’t hear valid criticism said about the president. Wah.

      • JMB

Yes, because staffers of other presidents have never made stupid gaffes like this before, it’s just Obama’s administration that does that./end sarcasm

    • Brian

I think Julia and flipsy are basically turned off by the limeyness of hillbuzz’s weird, prim screed.

  • Michael

They should have shown her Avatar. It’s the only movie where the 3-D is even really necessary.

  • Julia

THE queen? Like Betty’s the only queen on the planet? Not like it matters. The idea of people thinking they are “royal” is medieval. And the idea of other people buying into it is laughable. Time to get with the 21st century you slugs.

Now, now, Julia. We don’t make fun of the bizarre parts of American democracy (Electoral college votes? Really? Campaigns that last years? REALLY?! Re-electing George Bush as your head of state?! REALLLY?!?!?) so don’t make fun of those of us in the commonwealth who hold onto a symbolic head of state that reminds us of almost a thousand years of British democratic traditions. Living only in the now is no way to have a culture. Plus, she’s so adorable in her fancy hats…

      • mari

        second. love the hats too.

      • SC

That’s the thing my grandmother always used to bring up about why she liked the Queen and the monarchy for Canada: “She always has such nice hats.”

      • Jelana

I love the purses, too, which I’m guessing contain a lipstick and and old-school compact.

      • ks

The hats are great and she rock those glasses

    • SC

The Commonwealth has been chugging along just fine for nearly 150 years in Canada, and hundreds more in the UK. No need to fix what ain’t broke.

  • khrystyne

    I like that hat.

  • jimmy

    the comments are so funny……

  • AA

Did you know she also went to RIM that day and was presented with a Royal Blackberry? Say what you will, but the old bird kinda rocks. Oh, and ditto the hats. I saw her on Saturday with a lovely bright pink one.
